Chapter 191: Chapter 191
"I didn’t realize you were my junior..."
Kenneth Brown was also surprised. After all, Sileria Medical University was extremely hard to get into. His gaze towards Sienna Johnson changed; he no longer saw her as just an empty vase.
Sienna Johnson blushed a bit. "Actually, I didn’t graduate."
She had to leave in her sophomore year due to certain circumstances. Now, all her peers had graduated. Sienna was thinking that maybe she should get her bachelor’s degree since it was still quite different compared to just being a high school graduate.
The servant, seeing Sienna hesitate to get out of the car for a while, assumed she didn’t have an umbrella and went to get one to help her out. When the servant knocked on the car door, Sienna suddenly realized they had already arrived home.
"ACHOO..." Kenneth Brown sneezed again. Sienna was actually reluctant to bring Kenneth home. However, he was soaked through, and seeing him in this state, she couldn’t be too cold-hearted, especially since she still expected this man to earn money for her in the future.
"Come in, take a hot shower, and change into some dry clothes before you leave."
"Thank you, President Johnson. ACHOO..."
Kenneth Brown accepted without the slightest hesitation or polite refusal.
After taking a shower and changing his clothes, Madam suggested Kenneth stay for dinner. With his thick skin, Kenneth did just that. Sienna had never seen a man in her entire life. At the same time, she silently reminded herself that she should definitely avoid being polite with Kenneth in the future.
At the dinner table, several women were looking at Kenneth; even Curly Baby was curiously staring at him. Kenneth, however, remained calm and collected, completely unaffected. He was quite talkative and even managed to amuse Pauline Briggs with his numerous conversational topics.
"...Mr. Reed, what do your family members do for a living?" Pauline asked.
Kenneth Brown answered openly, "My parents are farmers. I have a younger brother and a younger sister. My brother graduated from college and went back home to start a business. My parents and my brother are still living in our hometown. My sister just got into university this year; she’s studying medicine too."
Pauline glanced at her daughter. This was the first time Sienna had brought a man home. Could she have feelings for him? However, his status was rather low, and Pauline Briggs was not satisfied. The principle of marrying someone of equal social standing still held true. Kenneth Brown’s family background was far too different from the Johnson Family’s...
Sienna Johnson naturally didn’t know what Pauline was thinking. If she had known, she would have immediately kicked Kenneth out.
"I heard about the Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory incident. You handled it very well," Madam said, looking at the young man with evident satisfaction.
Madam might have stayed at home, but she certainly was well-informed. Sienna always told her grandmother about many things, and sometimes her grandmother would even give her advice. Moreover, the old lady had many contacts within the Eastminster Group; after all, she worried about her granddaughter and would make inquiries.
Besides, what happened at the Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory was quite a significant event.
"You flatter me, Madam. It was my duty. However, President Johnson did agree to give me a raise as a reward."
"When did I agree to give you a raise?" Sienna lifted her eyes and glanced at him.
"Ah, so President Johnson was just teasing me, letting me rejoice prematurely."
Sienna Johnson was rendered speechless.
Madam said, "Good work deserves a raise. Sienna, go tell the finance department to increase Manager Brown’s salary."
Kenneth Brown smiled somewhat awkwardly. Their constant use of ’Manager Brown’ grated on his ears. He looked at the woman sitting across from him. Truthfully, compared to the icy ’President Johnson,’ he much preferred to call her ’Sienna.’ Sienna was a beautiful name, a name that danced on his tongue and lingered, leaving a trace of tenderness.
"Curly Baby is so beautiful. She’ll definitely be as pretty as her mother when she grows up," Kenneth said.
Sienna was indifferent. "I’d rather she look more ordinary."
"Why? Don’t all parents wish for their children to be both beautiful and smart?"
"If she’s too beautiful, and she finds a husband in the future, who knows if he only fell for her looks? Beauty fades. If he truly married her only for her beauty, wouldn’t she be cast aside when she gets older?"
Kenneth completely disagreed with Sienna’s viewpoint. "President Johnson, have you been hurt in a past relationship? Is that why you’re so hostile towards men?"
Sienna narrowed her eyes, watching him warily. Kenneth was getting more and more presumptuous.
Kenneth, who was adept at reading people, knew Sienna was displeased. He knew he should keep quiet, but he couldn’t stop himself from saying, "People naturally appreciate beautiful things; that applies to both men and women. Are you saying, President Johnson, that when you look for a husband in the future, you’d look for someone ugly?"
"I didn’t say I’d look for an ugly husband. Just that if he’s a good enough person, I wouldn’t mind if he were a bit plain."
"I feel the same way. But if she’s good enough and also beautiful, that would be even better."
"Manager Brown, don’t you think you’re being a bit greedy?"
Sienna noticed the rain outside had stopped. She then said to Kenneth, "Manager Brown, have you finished eating? It’s getting late. I remember you live in the suburbs. If you don’t leave soon, you’ll be very late."
Now that she had clearly asked him to leave, despite Kenneth’s thick skin, he had no choice but to rise and bid farewell.
"Thank you all for your hospitality. Madam, I’ll come to visit you again next time. Curly Baby, Uncle will bring you a toy next time."
Next time? There won’t be a next time, Sienna thought.
"No need to see you out!" Sienna Johnson stated.
"Goodbye, President Johnson."
Kenneth got up to leave. Sienna didn’t even bother to walk him out; it was a servant who showed him to the door.
Kenneth looked at the outwardly simple but grand Johnson Family mansion, his emotions in turmoil. In a place like Sileria City, where land was worth its weight in gold, the fact that the Johnson Family owned such an expansive estate already spoke volumes about their immense wealth. What made Kenneth feel even more deflated was that every decorative item in the Johnson Family mansion was an antique. He estimated that any single one of them could probably buy his small two-bedroom apartment in the suburbs... He sighed deeply, utterly frustrated. Why did the girl he had fallen for have to be Miss Johnson?
After Kenneth Brown left, the old lady and the younger woman of the Johnson Family began to question Sienna Johnson. Follow current novels on novel·fire.net
Pauline Briggs was the first to ask impatiently, "What’s the deal with that Kenneth Brown? You haven’t fallen for him, have you?"
Sienna, who was drinking soup, choked upon hearing this. She looked at Pauline and clarified, "What? Don’t just say things like that."
Madam also chimed in, "His family background is a bit poor, but the young man himself isn’t bad. If you intend to have him marry into the family, you’ll need to lower your standards a bit."
"Grandma, why would you think that too? If I had known you would all misunderstand , I would have definitely let him get drenched and find his own way back!"
Seeing that her daughter wasn’t interested in Kenneth, Pauline Briggs finally relaxed. "That Kenneth Brown isn’t bad, but his background is too poor. The gap between you two is too large. Besides, who knows if he’s only after your money."
