Chapter 10: Chapter 10
Shane’s POV
All day I’ve been getting weird looks from everyone- and when I say everyone, I mean everyone. In first period Kaelyn wouldn’t even look at me, and that bothered me a lot. I eventually moved desks to the one behind her, and kept repeatedly tapping her shoulder until she talked to me. All she did was flick me off and get back to work. She sure was pleasant wasn’t she?
Now it was our lunch period and I was standing in line with Gage. I couldn’t spot Kaelyn anywhere and I really needed to speak with her. I had to know if she knew about what I did to Carter… and if she heard the true story about why I did it. If Carter had told her, he probably lied. He probably made me seem like some conceited psycho jerk that beats people up for the hell of it.
“Dude,” Gage slapped me on the back. I turned around, ready to smack him. He smirked at me and pointed to an unfamiliar table, he pointed to the soccer jocks table. “I found Kaelyn for you. So, what’s my prize? Do I get to smack her butt without getting beaten up by you?” He slapped the air, earning a slap on the back of his head from me.
“You touch her and you’ll be beaten to a pulp. No special treatment, even for my best friend.” Gage laughed and crossed his arms over his chest. Gage has jet black hair; but his was dyed not naturally that color. He has pale skin and amber eyes. His eyes are an unusual color, I’ve never seen any as bright as his. His hairstyle was the ‘emo’ hairstyle or at least that’s the category he’s stereotyped into.
“Protective much?” Gage teased.
“Shut it,” I mumbled. Now I was staring at Kaelyn. Her beautiful hair was ruffled into waves and she was smiling and laughing with everyone else at the table. But, one thing bothered me. Carter had his arm lazily draped around her shoulders and they looked like they were dating. But, yesterday I heard him say that he just wanted to have a friends with benefits relationship with her.
I’m so confused.
Another thing that bothered me was the fact that she looked like she was enjoying it. I watched her get up; she was… getting in line? I looked closer at the table and saw that she hadn’t gotten her lunch yet.
This was my chance.
I felt like a stalker, watching her every move. She stood awkwardly in line about ten people behind Gage and me. I poked Gage’s ribs with my elbow, causing him to jump slightly. I rolled my eyes and nodded my head towards Kaelyn. Gage smirked and started walking towards her. He stopped halfway and looked back at me. I was still deciding whether to go or not. Eventually I decided to go and find out why the hell she’s ignoring me. Gage and I stood behind her, silently arguing about who gets to make her turn around. I don’t even think that she noticed that we were standing behind her. She was standing there, just looking at her nails; like she was inspecting them.
“Let me do it!” Gage mouthed to me. I shook my head. He wasn’t going to touch her. But, of course Gage didn’t listen. Gage lifted up his hand, and smacked her butt. The sound was very loud, and it must’ve hurt her because she put her hands on it and started mumbling about how much it hurt. When she turned around her eyes widened… they looked like two golf balls cemented into her head.
“What the hell!” She threw her arms up in the arm and was about to walk away from the two of us, but I grabbed her arm. I motioned for Gage to grab her other arm. “Let me go! I swear to god, Shane if you-“ I rolled my eyes and we kept dragging her out of the cafeteria. Despite her struggles, Gage and I easily dragged her into the janitors closet that was across from the cafeteria’s entry doors. Gage was smirking when I locked the door. What the hell is going through his mind right now? He may be my best friend, but he’s a creep.
“I can’t believe you touched me. I’m so going to beat the shit out of you. You’re such a fucking little creep!” Gage laughed as Kaelyn backed him up against a wall.
“Well, I don’t think you need to protect her anymore,” Gage laughed. My eyes widened and I started flailing my arms around, trying to signal him to shut up. Kaelyn didn't know I was protecting her! Gage made an ‘O’ formation with his mouth.
“Protect me?” Kaelyn turned to me. Her face was red with anger and she was pacing around. “You’re such a dickhead. First you beat up my best friend and you tell him, 'new person everyday', what the hell is wrong with you? Do you know how badly you hurt him? Have you seen the damn black eye you gave him? And what about the bruises on his cheeks and the ones on his ribs? I'm not even going to mention that you kidnapped me and brought me to a janitors closet. You're despicable.” She spat.
So, Carter did lie to her! I knew it! And I'm the dickhead?
“Wait a minute. You saw the bruises on his ribs?” I exclaimed. Great. Maybe Carter already started his friends with benefits business with her. She looked at the ground.
“Dude, that's the least of your worries.” Gage told me. “Kaelyn, Carter lied to you!”
"You expect me to believe you?" She scoffed. Kaelyn crossed her arms over her chest and stared at the two of us.
"Kaelyn, Gage is telling the truth. I'll admit that I did beat Carter up, but it's not for the reason you think. It's for a completely different one," I tried to reason with her, but she just shook her head.
"Then if it wasn't to satisfy your needs, then why would you beat him up?" She questioned. She locked eyes with me and it was making me nervous.
She'll never believe me. She'll never believe Gage. She won't believe anyone who tries to tell her the truth about yesterday.
"Trust me Kaelyn, you don't want to know," Gage added. She rolled her eyes.
"Exactly what I thought. You don't have a reason. Carter was right, I can't trust any of you." She started walking over to the door.
I grabbed her arm and turned her back around to face me. Our bodies were pressed against each other and our heartbeats were molding into the same pace. Her hair was falling perfectly in place over her eyes. At that moment in time, I felt whole.
"Kaelyn... You can trust me... please just believe me," I breathed. She shook her head and pushed me away.
"No. No, I can't trust you," She shook her head and practically ran out of the room. My hands found their way to my hair and I started tugging at it. I kicked a bucket with dirty mop water in it across the floor. It tipped over and all the contents spilled out. Gage jumped as it splashed all over his shoes.
"You owe me a new pair of vans," He mumbled as I led the way out of the janitor's closet. I ignored him and walked back into the cafeteria.
Kaelyn glared at me when I walked past her table. Carter's arm was, yet again, slung around her shoulders. It made me sick. I also noticed that her friend, Sierra I think, was looking at Gage in a strange way; and Gage was looking back with the same expression on his face. That's odd, I'll have to ask him why later.
I sat back down at my table, ignoring everyone. I didn't know what to do. It's going to take a lot to earn Kaelyn's trust.
Kaelyn's
POV
I'm furious with myself, and also a little sad. I want to trust Shane, but I know that it will just hurt me in the end. I shook my head, erasing the thoughts from my mind. I went to go sit at Carter's table, and then put on a fake smile.
"Where'd you go?" Carter whispered into my ear. His hot breath on my neck made me shiver.
"Bathroom," I lied. I've never lied to Carter. I hope it was believable.
Carter nodded his head and went back to talking with Jake and Cole about tomorrow nights game. I let out a small breath, too quiet for anyone to hear. I cannot be around Shane anymore. Who knows, I could be the next one on his 'new person everyday' list.
No, Shane wouldn't beat a girl.... would he? If he ran out of boys on his list he might.
I can't think about him, I can't associate with him, I can't trust him. I can't have anything to do with him. I think that would be the best thing for me. I don't want to get hurt in the end, physically nor mentally.
Kaelyn, Kaelyn, Kaelyn, you're not going to be able to stop thinking about the way he looked when he was leaning against your porch beam. And you won't be able to forget the way his body felt when it was pressed against yours. It almost felt as if it was meant to be... the steady beat of our hearts... the way his hands were tightly, but softly, gripping your arms. The way his voice sounded... everything.
I think I'm starting to like him...
But, if I don't want what happened to Sierra, then I have to stay away from him.
