Chapter 149: Chapter 149
Anna Thornton pressed the power button again, dusting off her phone as she said, "Conrad Sterling, I’ve noticed you’ve been all over the place tonight."
Conrad glanced at her sideways and said, "Was it a mistake for me to be your free driver? Should I let you off now?"
"It’s so late, where am I supposed to find a car? Plus, I could easily run into some bad guys! If I get into trouble, won’t you feel sad?"
Conrad’s expression told her he wouldn’t be sad: "Ignoring advice and warnings, any consequences are deserved."
Despite his annoyed tone, Anna chuckled lightly to ease the atmosphere.
Suddenly, she poked the man beside her.
"What?" The man looked at her briefly.
"You’re acting all cranky out of the blue, are you jealous?" Anna asked him with a playful smile.
Conrad saw her mischievous grin and got more annoyed, asking back, "Jealous of whom?"
"You know yourself who you’re jealous of."
In response, Conrad found it amusing and, intrigued, asked Anna, "Then tell me, what am I jealous of?"
"I won’t say, because if I do, you’ll deny it. I’m not giving you the chance to belittle me," Anna replied smartly.
Though she didn’t give him the opportunity, Conrad couldn’t help but rain on her parade.
"Don’t think so highly of yourself. I came to find you because Pop wanted me to bring you back. I saw you might be in danger and helped out. But that’s it. If you insist on getting into trouble, try and see if I’ll care."
"Then why are you suddenly angry?" Anna asked him.
"Really? Conrad, don’t you know that when you’re angry, you look just like Pop!"
Conrad, being a mature man known for not showing emotions, how could he possibly look like a three-year-old when angry?
Anna was definitely talking nonsense!
Even though he thought this, Conrad still looked in the rearview mirror to check his expression. His usual stern face showed no difference, and certainly not a pout like Pop’s that could hang a soy sauce bottle.
Anna was indeed talking nonsense!
But Conrad was in a bad mood, which was rare, given that he meddled once too often and this woman didn’t appreciate it.
It was him who noticed someone sneaking into Anna’s room and subdued them.
Florian Hollis did nothing but get himself in trouble twisting his own leg, yet she cared about him so much?
She even plans to bring him treats tomorrow?
Crying children really do get candy!
Conrad, due to saying nothing, was ignored the entire evening.
So, to say President Sterling was angry, it was more like a child upset for not receiving candy.
Yet he refused to acknowledge his temper, keeping a stern face without speaking to Anna the entire way home.
They returned to Sterling Residence, where Pop should have already been lulled to sleep by Granny Chandler.
But the little one hurriedly climbed out of his bed upon hearing the car, running to the window to see if dad and mom were back.
Downstairs, the two got out of the car and quickly distanced themselves.
Conrad, with his long legs, walked briskly ahead, causing a severe breeze, while Anna struggled to keep up with him.
Quickly ascended to the second floor, Conrad was ready to dive into the study.
He had spent too much time out today, and his phone was packed with emails, about to burst. It seemed he planned to pull an all-nighter tonight.
However, just as the man was about to enter the study, Anna caught up with him, "Wait a moment!"
Hearing this, Conrad paused but did not turn to look at her.
The next second, he felt something soft gently touch the back of his head.
"Today I accidentally hit you twice with the blow dryer in the dark. Did it hurt?"
Anna stood on her tiptoes, gently touching Conrad’s head, imitating Kevin Jacobs’ exaggerated tone, "It’s swollen bigger than a bun, it must have hurt. I didn’t mean to overlook you, poor you."
Whose head isn’t bigger than a bun?
Conrad shivered at Anna’s words.
Almost instantly, he dodged her hand and stepped back, "Anna, stay away from me."
Anna was just teasing, not expecting him to react so strongly, like a lion with its sensitive nerves touched: "What’s wrong with you?"
"I told you to stay away from me, didn’t you understand?!!" The man suddenly shouted at her.
But then, Conrad was confused.
His gaze shifted to behind Anna, where a curious little head peeked through the door crack, looking at him before retreating. Leaving behind a white, chubby mini barefoot, its little toes scrambling nervously, also retreating.
Pop had been waiting for dad to bring mom home, previously pretending to sleep to fool Granny Chandler.
Instead, she saw such a scene, her previously stretched out little face now filled with confusion and fear, hiding behind the door crack, unwilling to come out.
Conrad realized his mistake and composed himself.
He wanted to say something to comfort Anna and the child but couldn’t manage to say it.
Eventually, he just turned around, went sullenly into the study, leaving behind, "Take her to the room to sleep early."
"Stupid man, what a bad temper! How did I offend you?" Anna muttered as the study door closed from inside, "No wonder you can’t win over Marilyn."
After venting, Anna waved to Pop behind the door crack, "Come here, sweetheart, mom will take you to sleep."
Hearing this, the little one’s head cautiously popped out again, pointing at dad in the study.
"Let’s not bother with him!"
Anna took Pop to breakfast as Granny Chandler handed her a car key. ɴᴇᴡ ɴᴏᴠᴇʟ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀʀᴇ ᴘᴜʙʟɪsʜᴇᴅ ᴏɴ ⓝovelFire.net
"Miss Thornton, President Sterling said since your workplace is far away, you should drive this car."
Anna looked at the car key and found it was her favorite customized Aston Martin 007.
"Humph, throwing a fit at me last night, then offering me a date today! The car is nice though, really lending it to me? Where is he?"
"President Sterling pulled an all-nighter and left for the office early this morning. But he mentioned returning for lunch, so you can relax, the little miss is cared for."
Listening to Granny Chandler, Anna spread avocado on a whole slice of freshly toasted bread, skeptically stuffing it into her mouth for a bite.
What does this man mean?
Why does it sound to Anna like he’s purposely avoiding her?
Anna didn’t even know which of her words last night were wrong, for it to matter?
She fed Pop the other edge of the toast, watching the little one take a tiny bite, eating so blissfully.
Especially while seeing the empty spot where dad should be.
"Because Pop wet the bed, dad doesn’t like Pop and mom anymore," the little one thought.
