Chapter 146: Chapter 146

Conrad Sterling had mentioned earlier, this area doesn’t have any good hotels.

Florian Hollis had his assistant pick the best available, but it only barely meets a three-star standard.

Mary wasn’t too confident about the hotel’s hygiene; she lives across the hall and came over specifically to knock on Anna Thornton’s door: "Anna, this hotel’s rooms don’t even have phones to directly contact the front desk. Wait a bit, I’ll go ask downstairs if we can borrow an iron. It’d be best if they could disinfect the sheets and duvet as well."

"Okay... just knock when you’re back."

While Mary went to inquire at the front desk, Anna Thornton planned to take a shower.

She had danced all day and was drenched in sweat, feeling uncomfortable. Even delaying for a minute was torturous.

Just as Anna Thornton entered the bathroom and was halfway through her shower, suddenly the light above her went out...

She tentatively reached to turn the light on, but there was no response.

Anna Thornton reached for the towel hanging nearby while defensively grabbing the hairdryer.

The hairdryer was quite heavy and could be used for protection in a critical moment, and she couldn’t find a more handy weapon at that moment.

Anna Thornton lightly held the handle and opened the bathroom door a crack, finding it also dark outside.

If it’s not a power outage, then someone had pulled her room card.

It certainly wasn’t Mary; Mary would have knocked if she were looking for her, but she didn’t hear a sound just now.

So, could it be... someone sneaked in?

Anna Thornton tightened the towel wrapped around her chest, got goosebumps, but still tried to calm herself.

She took a deep breath, held it, carefully walked barefoot out of the bathroom without making a single sound.

Since it was so dark, anyone else in the room shouldn’t see her, therefore she could hide herself by not making a sound; otherwise, she would instantly become the target of an attack.

Moreover, as her eyes adapted to the darkness, Anna Thornton could already make out some movements in the room through the weak light filtering from outside the drapes.

Suddenly, she saw the silhouette of a tall man!

Then, the figure moved!

Anna Thornton could pinpoint the location by the footsteps, she gripped the hairdryer tightly and struck it forcefully to take the initiative.

Hearing a muffled groan from the other side, Anna Thornton hit again: "Anna Thornton, what are you doing?!!"

Why does this voice sound a bit familiar?

The way her full name was spoken with anger infused into it, Anna Thornton was all too familiar with it.

She quickly grabbed her phone from the bedside, using the screen to illuminate, it was Conrad Sterling.

"What are you doing here?" Anna Thornton looked at him quizzically, wasn’t this man supposed to have left long ago?

Conrad was too lazy to explain, he handed the room card to her: "Hurry up and turn on the lights!"

After Anna Thornton plugged in the room card for electricity, she turned back and noticed there was another person in her room.

Right by Conrad Sterling’s feet, squatting down, wearing a black baseball cap and mask; she hadn’t seen them when she shone her phone earlier.

She was startled: "What’s going on here?"

"This person tried to enter your room, I caught them." Conrad provided a brief explanation of the situation.

Conrad was supposed to be driving back to the Sterling Residence now, but having second thoughts, he wasn’t reassured.

"Haven’t I told you? These small rural hotels don’t even have security, they’re simply unsafe!"

Conrad casually came over to take a look, unexpectedly discovering someone actually sneaked into Anna Thornton’s room.

And the woman was still showering, completely unaware of the potential danger.

"If this person had armed themselves to attack, in such a place, the police wouldn’t arrive in time, you probably would have already been out of breath!" Conrad was in a bad mood when he arrived and still was when he returned, making his tone understandably harsh.

Since he saved her, Anna Thornton rarely refrained from retorting.

Still, not quite willing to be scolded, she mumbled back: "Maybe there’s still a chance of rescue, and I can retaliate too."

"Retaliate?" Conrad mocked with a curled lip, "With your hairdryer?"

"Don’t underestimate a hairdryer; didn’t someone just get hurt by it?"

She shouldn’t have brought it up; mentioning it made Conrad squint slightly, about to settle the score from earlier. ʀᴇᴀᴅ ʟᴀᴛᴇsᴛ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀᴛ novel-fire.net

"Speaking of which, this assailant doesn’t seem very strong!" Anna Thornton quickly changed the subject.

She finally studied the intruder in her room; the person wore a cap and mask, concealing their face thoroughly. But they seemed even smaller and weaker than her.

"And since you subdued them so easily, why did the lights go out just now?"

No need to ask, Anna Thornton already guessed the answer.

It was definitely intentional by Conrad, to scare her.

Plus, this man’s expression clearly said, ’You won’t learn your lesson if I don’t scare you.’

How can anyone be so petty?

He insisted on coming back, but would not admit he was worried about Anna Thornton, especially when he was angry and embarrassed.

To keep Anna Thornton from feeling proud, Conrad even staged this midnight blackout drama to dampen her spirits.

Now Anna Thornton felt his two blows with the hairdryer were totally deserved.

However, considering he did save her, they’re even now, let’s move on.

"I don’t think they’re armed with a knife either!" Anna Thornton now focused all her attention on the stranger who broke into her room, stepping closer, "I don’t see a weapon anywhere."

Anna Thornton tentatively reached to remove the stranger’s baseball cap, revealing a head of flowing long hair.

"It’s a woman!" She exclaimed in surprise.

Mary ran into Florian Hollis in the hotel lobby: "Florian, why are you back?"

"Why are you here?" Florian seemed to have rushed back, panting as he questioned Mary.

"I’m borrowing an iron to help Anna sanitize..."

"Go back quickly!" Florian interrupted Mary before she could finish, "Quick, go find her, Sister Anna might be in danger!"

Mary, along with Florian, hurried to the floor where Anna Thornton’s room was, just in time to see a stranger bolting from Anna Thornton’s room.

However, that person stopped abruptly at the door, turned, and twisted open the cap of a plastic bottle hidden in their sleeve, flinging the unknown liquid at Anna Thornton who was pursuing.

Conrad instinctively pulled Anna Thornton into his arms, shielding her with his back.

"Ahhhhh!" Mary was almost fainting from fright at the scene.

Florian, at least, was more composed. Watching as the other person intended to escape after throwing the liquid, he reached out to block them.

But the shadow dodged around him, sprinting from the nearby emergency stairwell.

"Go check on them, I’ll chase after!"

After saying this, Florian also dashed into the emergency stairwell.
