Chapter 42: Chapter 42
Jake pulled out his phone from his pocket and scrolled through it. Probably looking for Jane's number. He placed the phone against his ear as I watched.
"Hey, Jane."
"Yeah, can you bring over the guns for us?" He said after listening to her reply over the phone.
"Yes, she's here with me."
"You can ask her that yourself."
"Okay, see you in five." He took the phone from his ear and hung up before pushing his phone back in his pocket.
"She'll be here in five minutes." He said, glancing at me.
I felt surprised and my eyes widened as I asked, "She lives close by too?"
"Yeah, the rest do too except the twins."
"What did she ask you that you told her to ask me herself?" I asked, curiously.
"Wanted to know why you're at my place. But I didn't want to tell her about Kane since it's not my secret to tell." He said sincerely as he gave me a lopsided smile.
I smiled back at how caring he was being towards me. This was one of the reasons I fell in love with him. The others might have known that I was in Kane's gang before I moved to L.A and that he turned me into a werewolf. But they didn't know the abuse and hardships I faced. Only Jake knew that. "That's very sweet of you, Jake."
He chuckled, "Only for you, baby doll."
I chuckled too, and that was when we heard the door bell ring. We stopped and looked at each other before starting towards the kitchen door. We went through living room and the hallway. Jake reached the door first and opened it.
Jane stood on the other side, holding a black duffel bag. "Hey, Jake and Max."
"Hey." Jake replied as he stepped out of the house and followed him since we must be having the shooting practice outside. "Hi, Jane."
Jake took the bag from her hand, "Thanks."
"So Max, are you living here with Jake now?" Jane asked, looking too curious.
"Yeah, since I'm alone at home and Kane or his gang could come back."
"But we'll still be having our gang meet ups there." Jake added as he glanced at Jane.
"The twins are also part of us now, but they haven't had their first change until tonight." I told her and she nodded with a smile.
"I know, they called us all this morning, saying how awesome it will be to have super powers."
I chuckled because I knew that it was something that they would do. Jake shook his head as he also gave a short chuckle.
"Alright, I'll get going now. See you two at school tomorrow!" Jane said raising one hand in a salute.
"See you then!" I replied with a smile and Jake nodded at her, "Bye, Jane."
She turned around and walked towards the sports car parked at the curb. Jake turned to me, "Come on, let's go to the backyard."
"Okay." I replied then pulled the door of the house closed behind me.
When I turned around, Jake was rounding the corner of the house. I jogged after him and we rounded to the back yard. It was spacious and had a pool on one side with lounge chairs then grassland on the other side. The part that had the grassland had target dummies a few feet from the house.
His must know that he shoots guns since there were even dummies. But how did he still not know that he was in a gang? As if sensing my qualifications, Jake glanced at me as he dropped the duffel bag on the ground. "Dad and I practice shooting here. That's why there are these dummies."
"That was what I was thinking about." I replied as he knelt down in front of the duffel bag and pulled out two blocks; black and silver.
He stretched out the silver one to me and I took it. I weighed it in my hand and it felt like the black one that I held on that day. He straightened up and glanced at me, "Show me what you got, baby doll."
"Sure." I raised my right hand that was holding the glock and aimed it at the target dummy in front of me.
I closed one eye and focused on its head. Pulling the trigger, the bullet shut out as the cartridge fell to the ground. The bullet hit the target on the head and opened my other eye. I heard clapping and turned my head to Jake to see him grinning as he clapped.
"Well done, baby doll. That was awesome!"
I grinned back, "Yeah, and I used only one hand. I think our werewolf reflexes helped too."
"Yes-" Jake started replying, but was cut off by the sound of growling.
We both turned to the sound to see three large wolves rounding to the back yard. They were stalking towards us as they bared their teeth in a growl at us. One was brown, the second was black, it was in the middle and the last one was amber. They were no ordinary wolves, but werewolves.
No wolf was as large as them and no wolf would come to L.A. I didn't know if they were part of Kane's gang or not, but they looked fierce and out of control. I immediately aimed my gun at them as Jake swiftly bent down and took another block from the duffel bag.
"Stay away from us!" Jake shouted at them as he aimed both guns at them. "Or we'll shoot."
The wolves didn't seem to care about his warning. They continued stalking towards us as they growled, and I wasted no time in aiming at the black wolf's front leg. I pulled the trigger and the shot went straight into its left foreleg.
It staggered and narrowed its eyes at me before it turned to the others and growled in a less wildly. I was going to shoot again as I placed my hand on the trigger. But the other two pressed their bodies to the black one's and disappeared before our eyes just as Jake's two shots shot past the air where they had been.
The shots landed on the brick fences and I turned to Jake in amazement of what we just witnessed. "They just disappeared into thin air."
He took his eyes from the air where they had been standing seconds ago and turned to me with tight lips, "I know. I don't think they're from Kane's pack."
I furrowed my brows in confusion, "Then how did they know of us and they were trying to hurt us."
"Yeah, they looked wild, but still sane. We can talk to Tanner all about that."
"Oh, Tanner. I'll give him a call again." I said as I user my left hand to take out my phone from my pocket.
I scrolled through the contacts and tapped on Tanner's name. Placing the phone against my ear, I waited for him to pick as it rang. He picked up on the first ring, "Hey, Max. I'm so sorry that I didn't pick up earlier. I left the phone in my room and I was about to call you back when I was your call coming through."
"It's okay. Jake and I want to meet up now, especially since we just got attacked by these freaky wolves." I said as I glanced at Jake to see him placing his guns back in the duffel bag.
"Yeah, we can meet up right now. Wait, you got attacked?! Are you okay?" I could hear the panic in Tanner's voice.
I chuckled to ease his worry, "Yeah, we're fine. I'll tell you the details when we meet up."
"Okay, where are we meeting up?"
"Hang on, let me ask Jake."
He was now standing up and looking at me as he waited for me to finish the call. "Tell him to meet at Julie's diner down town."
I forgot that we now have werewolf hearing and he must have heard his question. "He said at Julie's diner down town."
"Yeah, I got that. I'll meet you there in twenty."
"Okay." I replied and hung up then placed my phone back inside my pocket.
"You're already great at handling a gun now, so you don't need gun practice anymore." Jake said with a proud smile.
"It's all thanks to you, my amazing teacher." I praised as I smiled back at him.
"Yes, it is."
I laughed, "Cocky much, bad boy?"
"You mean confident much." He said as he flashed me his charming smile.
I laughed again as I watched him pick up the duffel bag. He glanced at me, "Wait for me out front, I'll hide this and meet you there."
"Okay." I replied as he turned and made his way to the back door of the house. I walked back the way we came and the wolves came to the front.
After a few minutes of waiting, Jake appeared from the front door and locked it with his key. He placed the key in his pocket before turning around to me. He walked towards the large garage beside the house and pressed a button beside it. The garge's large gate lifted up and he entered into it.
I followed after him and entered too. The garage had four sports cars in it, Jake's Ferarri, an Aston Martin, BMW, and a Lamborghini. My eyes were wide as I looked at them, "Wow!"
He turned to me and smirked, "I know, baby doll, I know."
From the cars and their house, Jake's family was super rich, yet he doesn't act like it. Unlike Stephanie who acted like she was the only rich person in the world. Jake walked towards his Ferarri and I walked towards it too. I pulled opened the passenger door and got in just as he got into the driver's side.
He started the car and soon, we were speeding out of the garage. The gate closed on its own. We sped through the streets to Julie's diner. We arrived in a few minutes and Jake parked in the small parking lot of Julie's. I opened my door and got out then shut the door.
Jake also got out of the car and closed the door. We walked towards the door of the diner and he pulled the door open for me to enter first. I entered and he followed after me. The diner was small, but homey.
Booths were in place then a few chairs in front of the counter. Only one couple besides us was in a booth. A woman at the counter, waiting to take orders and a man at the register. I can see why Jake chose this diner. It was in a part of town that people didn't usually visit and it was very small and unpopular that anyone like Kane would know it.
Jake led me to a booth beside the window that looked out to the parking lot. I slid in and he slid in beside me. He took my hand and intertwined our fingers as they rested on the table. I glanced at our hands then looked at him to see him staring at me.
"We're finally going to get our answer to whether we're mates or not." He said in a low tone that sounded sad and his brows furrowed in worry.
I raised my other hand and used my two fingers to smoothen out the crease between his brows. "Yes, and it will be good news, so don't be worried."
His lips lifted up into a small smile, "But what will happen once we find out that we're not mates?"
"We shouldn't think about that. I believe that we can only be mates." I said, giving him a reassuring smile.
"I believe that too." He replied, and broadened his smile.
"Good because that will help you two become better mates." Tanner's voice said and we both turned to see him approaching out booth.
I stood up, letting go of Jake's hand, and Jake stood up too. "Tanner!"
