Take a stand to thrive

Amidst any strife

Wanda begins to hyperventilate. She cannot decipher the look on the doctor’s face. Is her baby unhealthy, is her child dying? The nurses try to calm her down, and Milos is very pissed.

“What is going on?” he barks, “I demand to know what is wrong”

“Master Milos, may I have a word with you, in private?” the doctor requests. Milos is about to protest, and say that he’s not leaving his wife, and that the doctor should better say whatever the problem is, but he looks at Wanda and the distress in which she is in, and decides to follow the doctor to the corridor. He knows that she might not be able to bear whatever news the clinician will give them.

At the corridor and out of Wanda’s earshot, the doctor hands Milos the gurgling baby, and motions to him to check its privates. Milos slowly uncovers the baby and apprehends what the problem is.

The baby is a girl.

She has huge, blue eyes, the color of his and the size of her mother’s. Her skin is white, just like his. This is to be expected because he is a wolf, and although Wanda’s skin is darker, it is natural for their baby’s skin color to tilt towards her father’s. Her hair however is jet black, just like Wanda’s hair. As he looks into her innocent blue eyes, different emotions flood through him- exhaustion, relief, anxiety, happiness, exhilaration, and pride. As he looks at her, nothing else matters at this moment.

“Master Milos?” the doctor’s voice brings him out of his musing. “What are we going to do about this situation?”

“How do you mean?”

“Well, I would suggest that we do something about this situation. You know that this is unheard of, as a woman has never led the pack.”

“What are you suggesting?” Milos asks slowly.

“How about we eliminate her? We could say that the baby was a boy but he died. This way, you’ll gain the sympathy of the pack, and they will crown you, as they will be convinced that you will bring forth another heir.”

Milos is so angry that he begins to shake, “What do you mean? I should kill my baby? My child? Why? Because I want to be crowned Alpha? No way!” he barks at the doctor. “I will never hurt my child!” With this, he storms out of the passage and back into the room where his wife is. On arriving at the room, he finds her fast asleep, with a frown on her beautiful face.

“We had to sedate her so she could calm down,” the nurse designated to observe Wanda explains.

He nods and dismisses the nurse. When he is left alone with his sleeping wife, he bends to kiss her on her forehead. He sits on a chair beside her and holds her hand with his free hand.

“Baby, I know you are asleep right now, but I know that you can hear me. First, I want to thank you for standing by me through thick and thin. I was practically forced on you. One minute I was saving you from those Rogue bastards, and the next, you are carrying my baby. I love you, Wanda, and thank you for carrying our child. You are a strong woman, and I am sure that our baby girl will be strong and indestructible because she is a combination of our strengths and capabilities.

I can sense that challenges will come because of her gender, but I swear to you and her this day, that I will protect you both, and I will fight for you, and I will give our daughter the stability she needs.

I love you so much, Wanda” he concludes, kissing her softly on her lips. He gets up and proceeds to lie on the large, comfy couch carefully placed at the far right end of the large room. He places the baby on his chest and watches her as she purrs in her sleep.

He recollects his father’s dying words, and the dream Wanda had when she was still pregnant. He thus strengthens his resolve to stand by his family, even if he has to stand against the whole pack.

Firmly determined, he puts his exhausted body to sleep.

It is half-past three am when Wanda wakes up, with heavy boobs and a heavy heart. She has not even breastfed her baby.

The poor thing must be so famished.

She carefully sits up on her bed and sees her husband on the couch, with their baby sleeping soundly on his broad chest. Her heart swells with love and pride, and at this moment, she knows that although she is scared of falling, she would fall a thousand miles for him, and even though she is scared of flying, she would in a heartbeat, she would count the clouds for Milos. She walks up to the duo and gently taps Milos on his legs. As soon as she does, his grip on the baby tightens and Wanda chuckles softly.

“Hey baby,” He drawls, sitting up.

“Hey,” she responds, “I need to feed our child.”

“It is a she,” he carefully informs her.

“Really? Woah, the moon goddess was right,” Wanda replies, “But why did the doctor request to see you in camera? Is she okay?” Wanda begins to fret, but Milos calms her down with his words.

“She is okay, he just wanted to let me know that the baby is a girl, and not a boy as everyone assumed”

“What’s going to happen to us, Milos? Will we be rejected or banished or something?” Wanda asks, evidently bothered.

“Nothing like that is going to happen, baby. I promise to protect and shield you both from any harm, I swear with my life, okay?”

Wanda nods and he in turn kisses her lovingly on her lips.

They both jump at the sound of their baby’s whimper. The little angel yawns widely, indicating that she is hungry. Wanda puts her baby to her left breast, and she latches on to her breast, Wanda is consumed by a kind of love that she has never felt before, and she feels incredibly glorious and feminine. Wanda puts her index finger in her baby’s left hand, and she immediately wraps her tiny hand around her mother’s finger. Milos and Wanda smile at this, and they, at this moment, experience exactly what it means to be a family.

“What will we name her?” Milos asks.

“Kayola.” Wanda simply answers

Milos pauses for a moment and says, “Kayola means “to cleanse”. How on earth did you get this name?” he asks, shaking with laughter.

Wanda chuckles and replies, “After the dream I had, I went to the Pack Library and checked the encyclopedia for a name, and I found it.”

“Kayola it is, then” he concedes.

Petra screams as she sights Wanda from afar. “Luna! Oh, my goddess, I am so happy right now, our baby is here!” She promptly takes the child from the nurse who accompanied Wanda from the hospital, as Milos has gone to attend to some pressing issues.

“Petra, I am so tired right now. I had no idea that pregnancy and childbirth would take such a huge toll on me,” Wanda confesses as soon as they reach the room. “All I want to do is sleep”.

“Awwwww… Luna, I understand okay, don’t worry, you can rest your pretty head. I’ll take care of the baby. I was informed that I am to stop my duties at the galley and focus on caring for you and the baby,” She pauses and sniffs the air, “In fact, it seems my au pair duties have started right now”. She places the sleeping babe gently on the bed and pulls out a diaper and a pack of wipes from the baby’s bag. Wanda watches in silence, waiting.

You know this baby looks more like you because he has feminine features, did you notice?” she asks while unbuttoning Kayola’s sleepsuit. “I am sure Master Milos…..” she drifts away and brings her hand to her mouth to conceal her squeal. She raises her head to look at Wanda and exclaims.

“Luna! It’s a girl, you have a baby girl”

As if Wanda did not know. Dramatic Petra.

“Yes, Petra” Wanda confirms, smiling softly.

Petra resumes cleaning the baby, but she can’t help but ask, “Does Master Milos know about this?”

“Yes, he does, and we both understand what will happen, but we are ready to fight for our baby.” She concludes.

“Very good, Luna, and trust me when I say that I will protect this baby with the last drop of my blood” Petra pledges truthfully.

“I have no doubts about that, and let’s hope it doesn’t come to that,” Wanda chuckles.

One of the guards knocks on the door, informing them that Milos is on his way up. This is Petra’s cue to leave, and she carefully places the baby into her cut. She exits just as Milos enters the room.

“Thanks, Petra,” he says, and she leaves.

Immediately the door shuts, Milos rushes to Wanda’s side and hugs her fiercely. Wanda, startled by this gesture, rubs his back with her palms. She does not say a word. She doesn’t have to. She understands that Milos has been confronted by the pack due to the sex of their baby.

“They said all manner of things, Wanda. Only my father’s Beta and his Luna, Ana stood by me. It was tough, but I got them to reason with me. We won, baby, we won.” He says and begins to spoil her with kisses.

Soon, they both fall into a peaceful sleep, hand in hand, as always.
