Chapter 51: Chapter 51
“Let’s fire this baby up.” Steve crack his bones on his knuckles before hopping inside the helicopter.
I felt someone hold my hand, intertwining our fingers together. I glanced at Ethan beside me whose eyes were filled with hope. I blink, giving him a smile in return. This is it. We are going to escape this place. We have been running away for the past months now and we have already travelled the whole country. I know our lives wouldn’t be the same after Harry had made fake IDs for us. Which also means faking our identity.
However, if it’s for Ethan’s sake I will pretend to be someone else just to be with him. This world doesn’t understand him when he’s asking for a second chance in his life. Just like what he said. Humans weren’t the only creature here deserves a second chance, monsters too. Even if he can transform into a dangerous beast I could still see the man I fell in love with. His beguiling eyes the first thing I noticed.
“Steve, check first the controls! We have to make sure everything is okay before we fly this baby!” Harry shouted at his friend, giving him a thumbs up.
He told us to back away and we did. The helicopter’s blade started to spin gradually, heating up its engine. My hair was blew away from different angles when the blades started to twirl alacritous. The swish sound coming its sharp blades rings in my ear. Harry stood beside us proudly, smiling at his friend when it soars high up in the atmosphere. I folded my hair into a bun, as I couldn’t contain my smile while watching Steve fly Helena. He really can ride her.
Harry signaled his friend to bring down on the rooftop since we need to get inside. Ethan carried all our bag packs. I wanted to help him but he told me that holding his hands were enough to help him.
“Harry.” Ethan called his attention. Harry twisted, anticipating for Ethan’s words.
“You have Bobby with you, right?” Ethan asked and that reminds me of our dog. My eyes widen in fear because we are going to fly out of this country without him.
“Yes.” Harry answered and I saw Ethan’s side lips curled up, patting Harry on the shoulder.
“Can you please…” he swallowed the lump in his throat and I noticed his eyes were getting glossy. I wrapped my arms around the side of his body then stroke his back. Harry was daze upon seeing Ethan’s teary eyes. I fondled on his shoulder, whispering endearing words to his ear to ease him.
“Take care of him while we’re away?” Ethan spit out the last words like acid in his mouth, forcing himself. He was against it, I can see it in his eyes. He wanted to take Bobby with us. He was already part of our family as we treated him like our own son.
Harry blinked multiple times, and I could see the sorrow in his eyes while his hair was being blown away by the helicopter’s rotation. Steve was yelling to climbed up already and I gave him a wait sign.
“Don’t worry about him. I’ll take care of your child.” Harry assured us and I couldn’t help but a tear fell off my eyes, drenching Ethan’s shirt. Ethan smiled as he suppress his tears, resting his head on mine.
“Thanks, man.” Ethan fist bump with Harry. I smiled at the sight, looking proud at Ethan because he is asking for a favor even though it doesn’t really fit in his vocabulary.
“Uh…I hate to break to you all but we need to go now.” Steve yelled inside the helicopter. We chuckled at his remark and decided to depart now.
Harry ordered his guard which they followed while Ethan and I are looking at each other, finally getting out of this hell hole. We will never forget Harry and Steve’s generousness. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t make it where we are standing now.
“Let’s go live far away from here where no one will know about us.” he said. I bit my lower lip, once again I was teary eyed from the emotional roller coaster. I grin and planted a soft kiss on the side of his lip.
“Let’s go.” I stated before turning on my heels. Harry was already ahead of us, crossing the gap between our distances on the helicopter. I could finally see it. The entry way towards a peaceful life. I couldn’t conceal the excitement that’s rushing in my veins. We were about to off set when something caught my eyes in the distance.
I narrowed my eyes into slits, trying to take a look what is it. It’s a dot. It kept getting bigger and bigger and before I knew it, Ethan already transformed then curled me between his arms, securing me in his body. The ground shook and I heard a loud explosion, almost deafening me. I gasped and look at Ethan who was looking from his shoulder. His eyes were plastered with horror as he inspects what happened.
“E-ethan?” I tried to call his attention but he didn’t say anything. Instead, he hugged me so tight, I couldn’t breath properly.
“E-ethan…” I called his name again, catching his attention. I am curious. I wanted to see what happened. However, he wasn’t letting me. He was speechless and couldn’t move. I was about to straggle away from him when I heard a blasting cry coming from Harry.
“Steve! NO!”
My heart skip a beat and my whole body went solid as a rock. It was as if everything had turned in a slow phase when I notice a large puff of dark smoke in the atmosphere. My eyes widen when I finally pushed Ethan away to see what was going on. Everything went upside down as the surroundings around me faded when I saw the helicopter all burned down. Harry was kneeling down on the ground next to a crack cement that could fall off anytime now.
His guards were trying to move him away because the engine might explode any minute now but Harry’s screams echoed throughout the whole area while punching on the concrete.
“N-no…” I mumbled, shaking my head when I took a step forward.
This can’t be. He can’t be dead. He promised us. He promised me. My vision blurred from the tears forming in the corners of my eyes. My lips formed into an uncontrollable sobs before dropping on the floor, clenching on my wounded heart.
“STEVE!” I tried to crawl away but Ethan stopped me. He was telling me something that we need to get out of here or else we will all die here.
“We can’t leave Steve!” I shout at him, pushing him on his chest. Ethan can’t do anything as his arms weakened to see me crying miserably. I shook my head to him and forced myself to stood up, running towards where the helicopter is when Ethan grabbed my hands forcefully.
“Natasha! We need to escape here! Steve is already dead!” he threw those words like acid that made me gag.
“He’s not yet dead! He can still make it!” I shouted and was about to push him when Harry shouted.
“Duck!” he said and before we could look at his spot, he pushed us away from the rooftop. I felt my body falling in the air when Ethan quickly placed me on his back then landed on the ground swiftly. We heard explosions, loud ones that shook the ground. I wince but I that didn’t stop me from looking on the house.
“N-no…no!” I watched in horror as the roof top crumbled down into pieces as Ethan started to run away from the place. I punched his back, telling him to halt because Harry is still there but Ethan didn’t listen to me. He kept in running and running until we are now in the middle of the woods.
“Ethan! We need to go back! Harry needs us!” I screamed but he pretended to be deaf. I cursed at him, throwing hits on his back. This can’t be! I opened my mouth to protest when I heard another series of detonation. I glanced behind and my eyes caught something. There was a helicopter that landed on the ground.
My blood boiled as I clenched my fist when I saw Allen drop off the helicopter he was riding. Behind him were his troupes with tanks. He killed Steve. He killed Harry. He killed my friends who were there through thick and thin with us.
Before Ethan could farther away from them I jumped off from his back then sprinted towards the house. I stretched my hand, reaching for Harry and Steve when someone stop me. I lost my balance and drop on the dirt, wretched.
“Natasha! We can’t go back! Can’t you see? Allen had found us! If we go back there we will die!” Ethan whispered loudly so the forces wouldn’t hear us from this distance. Ethan took me behind the bushes and trees. He wiped off the dirt from my cheeks and was forcing me to look at him when I slapped his hands away, biting my lower lip to suppress my burst out.
Ethan sighed in defeat but he didn’t stop from pursuing me.
“Natasha, I know it’s hard for us to take in what happened to them. They were nice people and they are the only one who gave me a chance to live in this world with you.” he explained, stroking my cheeks.
“But we need to keep going. They are already dead. I saw how the helicopter exploded. I saw how they fire missile on the rooftop and Harry pushed us away to save us. They are…” Ethan swallowed.
“Our heroes and we will never forget about them. Ever.” Ethan pulled me into a tight hug, caressing the back of my head softly and gently.
Something pierced in my heart as I buried my face on his chest, letting out the pain.
