Chapter 59: Chapter 59

"The Landlord gave us permission to search and ask each person in this apartment whether they have been seen these two missing persons or not. I gave them a head-up about the case of these two, which involved homicide and fugitive."

We were both silent as we looked at each other, unable to think of what to say to Allen. It was like he was a mushroom that came out of nowhere. I couldn't help but gape at his uniform. He looks dreadful, and the vivid power in his eyes makes you want to fall on your knees and do what he commands.

"T-that's horrible." I changed the way I conveyed myself while staring at my picture. I feigned to be astonished, and hopefully, he didn't see through what I frankly felt.

"May I know, Sir, what did they do? So we can have a clue to these two people."

I glanced at Ethan when his voice changed abruptly into something I hadn't heard before. It was intense, gravelly, and ominous. Even Sergeant Allen was incapable of answering his question first before falsifying a cough.

"Well, we had a lead that these two are involved in the case of homicide since Ms. Gomez was caught in a picture posted on the victim's social media. If you don't know, there's a werewolf lurking in our city."

"We had also found shreds of evidence that lead to the werewolf where he was seen, taken a picture, and tracks of his footprints. The creature was involved in mass slaughtering in an Asylum where most patients were killed. Someone survived and gave us this."

He fished something inside his pocket and then gave us pieces of fur. Ethan took it from Allen's finger and then stared at it. I studied his expression and saw his eyes change, but it was only sheer winks because they went back to normal.

"We gave it to the experts and said this fur belongs to a creature who can shapeshift. Scientists have uncovered some human compartments. At the same time, it belongs to a beast."

Allen took the fur from Ethan and then put it inside a container. He was eyeing us when our eyes locked for a moment. As if we had been detected, but he's just staying low-key.

"They concluded this particular suspect was half-human, half-wolf. I know it's hard to believe what we are trying to say, but this case we are handling is severe. This beast can harm humanity. It's something we, as humans, should worry about."

He gave the container to one of his companions behind him and gaped at us. I felt like I was being observed and studied carefully under a magnifying glass. Once they see something that will harm them, they will crash, leaving no dust.

"Can we see your IDs?"

I felt my whole body quiver. The sweats on my forehead were developing, and my hands were shuddering, making me suppress them behind my back.

We're doomed, and we can't lie about them having no IDs. That would make us more suspicious. I was looking anywhere but his face. What should I do? We're being cornered, and we can't escape right now because they might catch us.

"Do you have IDs?" Allen raised his eyebrow, crossing his arms. I can sense the skepticism in his voice. I gulped and then opened my mouth when Ethan cut in.

"Sure, Sir." Ethan turned his back, going to our room to fish something. I was left alone in front of the doorway. Allen's eyes suddenly gaze down at me. I shrank in my spot, gobbling the bulge in my throat to ease the pressure.

"Here."

Ethan came back, handing two identity cards to Allen. He took it from his hand and then studied them. My eyebrows did a straight line, looking back and forth between Ethan, who looked calm and collected, and Allen, who was nodding.

"So, you're Mr. and Mrs. Duckstein, huh?" He looked at us, reassuring us that we were free from their questions.

"Okay, thank you." he gave the ID back to us. I took it from him and then looked at the ID. I was confused when I saw my picture attached but with a different name and birthday. How? Where did Ethan get this?

"Have a good day. If you see this woman, and if she's with a man, please contact us." he gave a card with his number. Beside him with his comrade was holding my picture. He nodded his head and then turned around. His companions waited for him to take a step forward before they disappeared from our sight.

Ethan slowly closed the door behind us and then took tugged me. I gasped when he ran into our room, locking the door. I could hear his deep breaths when he leaned on the thick wood, resting his forehead on it.

"Ethan." I held his arm. However, he suddenly smacked my hands away from him, making me yelp and whine in pain. Ethan suddenly realized what he did because he embraced me, caressing my hand he slapped.

"Fuck, I'm sorry."

"it's okay," I told him, then little pushed him. I held his cheeks, looking intently into his eyes.

"Ethan, how did you get these IDs?" I asked seriously, catching his eye. He suddenly hangs his head low, looking at the ground. My heart pounded, and my feeling suddenly weighed down.

"Ethan, don't tell me-" before I could wrap up my sentence, he nodded his head, confirming we had the same thoughts.

"You told me you wouldn't kill anyone anymore, Ethan." my hands shook, but I restrained them. Now it's not the right time to burst out, but something pierced through my chest, leading to fatality.

"I had to, Natasha. I couldn't think of an idea how to fake our ID. We don't know anyone here because we just got here."

"Still, you killed someone-"

"IT'S THE ONLY WAY I COULD THINK OF!"

He pushed me away, stumbling and then dropping to the ground. I was shocked to the core. I couldn't move.

"Cut me some slacks here! You're not the one they are looking for! I am! One fuckling sorry isn't enough for them to forgive me! We are living in a fucking civilization where people will be condemned to death due to their crimes they didn't purposefully do in the first place!"

The floor moved slightly, causing a minor earthquake. I flinched when he punched the wall, making a hole.

"Stop! Please!" I begged him to calm down. However, he didn't listen. He went berserk.

"I don't want to die! I don't want to get caught! I still want to enjoy my life with you!" he shouted one after another, then dropped to the floor, crying and shaking so bad. I was left speechless in my spot.

He was losing control of himself, and his shoulders were shaking so bad as he palmed himself. His tears were pouring down his cheeks like a cascade. I could hardly recognize him in front of me. He was fragile, and it seemed like he would explode in a few seconds.

"I could not give up and give them my freedom. This is all I have right now to be with you." he sniffed, embracing himself on the cold floor.

"Why does the world deceive me so much? I know I have committed many sins and shortcomings, but do I deserve to experience them? Why was I even born if this is how I can only experience happiness once in my life? Why am I still here if I do anything like this to fight for my will? If I'm just going back to my old habits?"

He slowly turned to me, his eyes red and puffy. It was as if heaven and earth were enfolding him. I was a statued in my place, unable to move. Our gazes met, and my impression reflected on him. I see myself in his eyes. Weakening, despairing, wanting to give up.

"What else do I need to do so that space does not take you away from me? What else do I have to sacrifice so that we do not separate from each other? What other ritual do I need to do for those above to hear me?"

He was shaken and chortling, laughing at his own words. He was silent for a few seconds. I remained in my seat, waiting for him to speak again.

But, for a few minutes, he still did not speak. I thought he would be completely silent when he suddenly crawled closer to my place.

"Sorry, my dear, I just lost my temper again. I was just carried away by my feelings because I thought I would lose you. They almost caught us."

He whispered across from me and leaned his forehead against me. He closed his eyes as his fingers caressed my cheek., providing electricity flowing to my system.

"I'll do everything to keep you from getting into this chaos, even if my life is at stake."
