Chapter 1576: Chapter 1576
In order to let everyone know that he was learning about antiques, Peter Brown deliberately brought all his books to the office.
Seeing Peter carrying such a huge pile of books, Ivy Cooper curiously asked, "What books did you buy this time? Why are they all old books?"
"I just happened to pass by the Antique Market after I signed up for classes and went in to have a look. I saw a guy who picked up a small knife. He spent only several hundred yuan on it, but someone there offered to buy it from him for several thousand. It seems like an easy way to make money."
Reid Nelson laughed and said, "So you got interested?"
"Learning a bit about this field is good. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll find a Treasure and get rich."
Both women started laughing.
Ivy Cooper laughed and said, "Keep dreaming, where do you find such deals? I’m telling you, the market is full of counterfeit goods now, too many people have been tricked."
Peter also laughed, "Anyway, I don’t have much money. I can’t be tricked that badly, and it’s always good to learn something."
Reid Nelson said, "Don’t you need to study for your self-taught exams? Where do you find the time to learn these random things?"
"I’ll look at it when I’m relaxing. I can’t just unceasingly study dry knowledge."
While they spoke, Peter started flipping through the books one by one before neatly arranging them in the cabinet.
Initially, Peter just brought the books as a pretext, laying the groundwork for future bargain hunts. However, once he began reading one book, he couldn’t stop. The more he read, the more it seemed like a door to vast knowledge had opened before him. As he absorbed the information, Peter realized there was so much to know about antiques.
Sitting in the office, since there wasn’t much work that day, Peter decided to focus and start reading. With his excellent memory, he had memorized several books in just two hours.
However, though he had memorized the information, Peter felt that many things he read about could not be fully understood from just those few books.
After work, both women left unusually early, and no one invited Peter out for dinner.
After hastily eating, Peter returned to the office. This time, instead of reading books, he turned on his computer and searched online for more information about the subject, downloading everything he could find and filling his computer with a trove of knowledge.
While Peter was busy studying, the sound of Ivy Cooper’s phone conversation also reached him.
Peter selectively eavesdropped on Ivy’s conversation, ignoring trivial matters but paying attention whenever it involved the office. This time, Ivy was talking to a woman from the headquarters, but Peter didn’t know which department she worked in.
"Big trouble, Ivy, do you know? A huge issue has arisen."
"I just heard the news, the provincial discipline inspection commission suddenly took Stanley Hill away."
"What?" Ivy was clearly shocked and exclaimed loudly.
"The word’s out. They say that Stanley, while serving as the manager of your branch, was involved in serious disciplinary violations. You know our company is a Provincial Corporation, and now that this has happened, it’s a big problem."
The voice on the other end of the cell phone seemed out of sorts as Ivy loudly said, "How could Stanley be in trouble? Wasn’t he expected to move up to deputy general manager?"
"Everyone thought he might replace Mr. Spencer, but then this happened so unexpectedly. Now his chances seem slim, and there are all kinds of rumors. No one knows how things will develop."
After a few more words, they ended the call.
Peter was somewhat surprised too. He hadn’t expected things to happen so abruptly, that in just one day’s time, such an incident had occurred. The efficiency seemed almost too fast.
Thinking about it, Peter realized that he was beginning to understand Mr. Taylor’s capabilities better, and that Mr. Taylor was certainly no ordinary person.
It was clear that Theodore Smith must have hurried to the state capital last night to inform Mr. Taylor, and Stanley must have been setting up a major scheme that could have buried Mr. Taylor too. Without knowing how to unravel it or what sort of trap had been laid, Mr. Taylor had taken a decisive approach by removing Stanley from the equation. With Stanley gone, any trap he had set would collapse instantly.
Mr. Taylor was indeed awesome!
When thinking about Ivy, Peter could only shake his head. This woman did not walk the straight path, always engaging in affairs like being a mistress. She thought that by getting close to Stanley, she’d have good fortune, but now, everything had fallen apart.
"I’m sorry!" Peter muttered to himself, feeling somewhat responsible since his talk with Henry Ford had triggered the events leading to Stanley’s downfall.
Of course, his sense of guilt was fleeting. Peter didn’t truly feel remorseful. In the corporate world, it was either you or me who would survive, and now Peter understood the importance of his eavesdropping ability. If Ivy’s schemes had succeeded, he would likely have been ousted by now.
What would happen next?
Sitting there, Peter was no longer in the mood to delve into more knowledge, as he pondered what might come.
With Theodore gone and Stanley in trouble, even Mr. Taylor might be held accountable for any lapses in management, right? Could he face scrutiny?
As this thought crossed his mind, Peter was startled, his perception of the provincial authority’s detention of Stanley Hill taking on a new dimension. Perhaps Mr. Taylor wasn’t behind it all.
The more he thought about it, the more he considered the possibility that Mr. Taylor wouldn’t overlook the issue of responsibility following the downfall of two senior company officials. Even if he planned to act, he should have been more cautious. It’s possible that this drastic action wasn’t his doing.
If this wasn’t Mr. Taylor’s doing, did it mean someone else had their eye on Mr. Taylor’s position? If that was the case, things just got more complicated.
Unfortunately, at Peter’s current level, he didn’t have access to evidence to validate his suspicions. He knew one thing for sure: if Mr. Taylor also fell, Henry Ford’s position would be compromised, and what about himself?
Peter believed that if Henry got into trouble, life at the company would no longer be easy for him.
It was time to act for his own survival!
With that in mind, Peter seriously began to contemplate the possible consequences he would face if Henry faced repercussions.
At that moment, Peter had a thought; it was time to turn the tables on those who were against him.
