Chapter 251: Chapter 251: Wiped out

As they approached the outskirts of the settlement, the crisp air that had once carried the scent of pine began to change. It grew heavier, denser, tainted by something unseen yet suffocating. The Empress, walking slightly ahead, halted mid-step. Her gaze sharpened beneath the veil, and her hand rose slightly ... a silent command for everyone to stop.

"Wait," she said quietly, her tone edged with warning.

Lucas frowned, scanning the path ahead. "What is it?"

The Empress didn’t answer immediately. She closed her eyes, her divine senses stretching outward. For a brief moment, the world seemed to still around her. Then her eyes snapped open, her expression grim. "Something is wrong. The air is foul... lifeless. Be on guard."

Lira stepped closer, clutching her weapon. "Lifeless? What do you mean?"

Before the Empress could respond, the faint crunch of their boots against snow began to change. The white beneath their feet darkened, until Lucas realized with a chill that the snow was gone. In its place was a thin, black mist crawling across the ground, swirling lazily around their ankles. It looked alive, pulsing faintly with an eerie rhythm.

Selene covered her mouth, her voice trembling. "What... what is this?"

The Empress’s eyes narrowed. "Corruption," she murmured. "Something unnatural has taken root here."

Mirielle’s heart began to pound. She recognized the faint outlines of the settlement’s boundary stones in the distance. "No... no, this can’t be..." Before anyone could stop her, she broke into a sprint, her voice rising in panic. "Father! Father!"

"Mirielle, wait!" Lucas shouted, running after her, but she was already far ahead. Nyx, Lira, and Selene exchanged quick glances before rushing after them, their cloaks whipping behind them in the cold wind.

As they neared the edge of the village, a dreadful silence filled the air. No dogs barked, no carts creaked, no laughter or voices echoed. Only the faint hiss of the black mist slithering across the ground remained.

Mirielle stumbled through the wooden gate, her eyes darting wildly from one side to the other ... and then she froze. Her scream tore through the quiet like a blade.

Lucas and the others arrived moments later and stopped dead in their tracks. The sight before them stole the breath from their lungs. The snow-covered streets were littered with bodies ... men, women, even small children ... all lying still with expressions of terror etched onto their faces. The black mist curled around them, feeding from their flesh, turning it grey and brittle.

Nyx covered her mouth, trembling. "By the heavens..."

Selene fell to her knees, her eyes wide with disbelief. "How could this happen...?"

Lira’s voice broke as she spoke, tears forming in her eyes. "There are so many... this was supposed to be a peaceful place..."

The Empress stepped forward, her expression as cold as the mountain wind, yet her eyes burned with anger. She knelt, pressing her palm against the darkened soil. The mist recoiled from her touch, hissing faintly as if afraid. "It’s begun," she whispered, almost to herself.

Lucas turned to her, his voice low but firm. "What do you mean?"

Her gaze met his, and the faint glow of divine energy shimmered beneath her veil. "The rot," she said. "It’s spreading faster than I feared. This is no ordinary plague ... it’s corruption born of darkness itself."

The group fell silent, the weight of her words settling over them like a shroud. The cold wind carried a faint echo through the empty settlement ... a whisper of sorrow, of lives extinguished too soon.

Lucas looked around once more, his heart heavy. The mountain’s trials had been cruel, but this... this was far worse. This was evil taking shape before their very eyes.

When they reached the heart of the settlement, the world seemed to fall utterly silent. The black mist thickened, winding like dark smoke through the empty streets, clinging to the walls and roofs that once echoed with laughter. The group walked slowly, no one spoke. They all knew what they would find...but none were prepared for the reality before them.

Lucas stopped first. His gaze fell on a large, still figure lying near the broken remnants of the settlement’s main hall. The man’s clothes were torn, his once proud frame now twisted in a way that told of a violent and merciless death. For a long moment, Lucas could not move. His heart sank as recognition dawned.

"Torin..." he whispered, his voice strained.

Mirielle froze where she stood. Her eyes darted toward the body, and before anyone could stop her, she stumbled forward. "No... no, it can’t be him... Father!"

Lucas moved quickly, reaching her just as she was about to drop beside the corpse. He caught her shoulders firmly, pulling her back before she could see the full horror of what remained of the man she loved so dearly. "Don’t look," he said softly but firmly.

She struggled weakly against his grip, tears already streaming down her cheeks. "Please... let me go... I need to see him... I need to..."

"You don’t," Lucas interrupted, his voice breaking. He turned her toward him and pulled her tightly into his chest, shielding her from the sight. "You don’t need to see that. Not like this."

Her sobs came hard and fast, her voice muffled against his chest. "He... he promised me... he said he’d be fine... he said he’d wait for me to come back."

Lucas’s own eyes burned. He held her tighter, one hand resting gently on the back of her head. "He was a good man, Mirielle," he murmured. "He cared for you more than anything in this world. He’d be proud of you... he’d want you to live."

The others stood a few steps away, their faces heavy with grief. Lira pressed a hand to her mouth, her eyes glistening. "I can’t believe it..."

Selene shook her head slowly, her voice trembling. "Not just him... look around. They killed everyone... even the children. How can anyone do this?"

Nyx clenched her fists, her expression sad but her voice low and filled with cold anger. "This isn’t the act of mortals. This is corruption ... it kills without mercy or reason."

Seraphine, who had remained silent until then, looked around with a hollow expression. Her voice came out calm but heavy with sorrow. "When the darkness spreads, it does not see age, rank, or innocence. It devours everything."

The Empress stepped closer, her long white robes fluttering faintly in the icy breeze. She looked over the bodies ... the frozen faces, the lifeless eyes ... and for the first time in a long while, her calm façade wavered. "An entire settlement..." she said softly, her tone dark and distant. "So many lives erased as if they were nothing."

She looked to the horizon, the faint flicker of the dying sun reflecting in her veil. "If their goal is to enslave the kingdoms and slay those who resist, then they have begun well. This is more than just domination... this is eradication. They want to cleanse the world of those who won’t kneel."

Lucas raised his head slowly, still holding Mirielle, who wept silently now, her tears soaking into his cloak. His gaze hardened as he stared at the destruction around them. "Then they’ll have to answer for this," he said quietly, his voice steady and full of resolve.

Selene stepped forward, her expression solemn. "Every single person here... even the smallest child... deserves justice."

Lira nodded, her tone soft but firm. "We can’t let this happen to anyone else."

The Empress whispered almost to herself, "If this is the price of their ambition, then we must stop them before the world itself becomes a grave."
