Chapter 85: Chapter 85
Third Person’s POV
Adam stepped into the abandoned warehouse, his eyes scanning the dimly lit space. And there, right before him, stood the assassin who had come so close to ending his life.
As he took in the scene, Adam's brows furrowed and his jaw clenched in anger. He couldn't bear the sight of Maxine sitting there so calmly, solving Rubik's cubes as if nothing had happened. Determined, he approached her.
"Hey," Adam greeted, his voice laced with tension.
His presence cast a shadow over Maxine, causing her to slowly lift her head. She saw a man with pale skin and a dark aura standing before her. It was then that Adam noticed the wounds and bruises on her face. However, no trace of pity crossed his mind.
"Nice to see you again," Adam uttered, waving his hand. Maxine welcomed Adam’s sardonic grin with solemn expression, as if he's not curious to what the muscle man in front of her is about to do.
To give him a clue, Adam grabbed her collar and forced her up. "You b*tch..!"
He was about to punch her real hard, but someone held is hand and stopped him.
Hold up, man," the mediator chimed in with a chuckle. Furrowing his brow, Adam shot a glare at Lawrence.
In an instant, Adam recognized Lawrence. He would never forget the man he saw from the picture – Agatha’s fiancé.
"Damn it," Adam muttered.
Now, he couldn't tell if he was furious because he spotted the hired assassin or because he laid eyes on Agatha's soon-to-be husband.
"Why are you here?" Adam questioned, still gripping onto Maxine's collar.
Lawrence arched an eyebrow. He wanted to toy with Adam by asserting his right to be there as Agatha's fiancé. Truth be told, he had used his resources and wealth to track down Maxine. However, seeing Adam's irritation, he decided it was best not to provoke him any further.
"Mr. Brett requested my assistance," Lawrence replied.
“Hah.” Adam scoffed. “I didn’t know he’s that pathetic.”
“Shouldn’t you worry about the woman in your hands? With your thick arms, you might killed her,” Lawrence said.
"This freak tried to kill me and Agatha!" Adam defended then shook the collar of the murderer.
Soon, Maxine’s lips detached. "That's not true. I actually gave you a chance to live,” she murmured with apathetic gaze.
Adam was so surprised that Maxine even had time to smile while spouting nonsense within his arms.
'He gave me a chance to live? That's crazy,’ Adam snorted in his head.
"Don't lie! You bitch!" he yelled. "I heard about the poison you injected to me! It’s very poisonous."
"Yes," Maxine said, sighing, as if she doesn't have energy to explain but she had to do it anyway. "And you maybe also heard that a little amount of poison won't lead to death."
“That…”
"If I really wanted to kill you then I should have give you more. But I didn't." Maxine grabbed his hands that were on her collar and pushed Adam away.
"A-Are you saying that you purposely let me live?" Adam flung a weird question as he watched her sat back on the chair.
Maxine picked up the rubic cubes on the floor, where she dropped it, and continued solving the puzzle.
"Why would I kill a person who's on Agatha’s side? People who protects her is an ally," Maxine gave a nonchalant answer, as if hse’s muttering the obvious fact.
Actually, Adam also had this thought before. If Maxine is a person who really wanted to kill Agatha, he had lot of time to do his misdeeds. But time passed by but Adam found Agatha unharmed. So he thought of the possibility that Maxine doesn’t really want to kill them. However, he cannot just easily accept the fact that the killer who was once an enemy will become their alley.
Adam took a glance at Lawrence who helped them traced the killer.
Lawrence nodded his head to assure Adam that Maxine was speaking the truth. Yet, Adam has a huge trust issue, so he does not want to let his guard down and continued to suspect Maxine’s real intention for helping.
Therefore, Adam opened his red lips again.
"How can we trust that you're on our side now?" he asked Maxine.
Blue, yellow, green, red and white.
Maxine placed the finished rubic cubes onto the table which she solved within a small time frame. At her silence treatment, Adam.
“What if the person who asked you to do this told you to make a lie?”
“You should ask me that question after I told you who did it,” Maxine uttered. She leaned closer and whispered, “It was Mr. Lanceil’s father.”
Adam had his eyes wide open.
Lanceil.
The man who Agatha tried to seduce.
If it was Lanceil’s father who planned to kill Agatha, then Maxine must be telling the truth.
Adam was perplexed. The first thing he thought was Agatha’s reaction. How would she react into this?
As Lawrence, who first heard this, noticed the same bewildered expression on Adam’s face, he intervened in the conversation.
“You told us that it was Mr. Grim who wanted Agatha to die. Basically, he’s your boss. So, I wanted to know what you had a change of heart.” Lawrence looked at her and continued, “Why did you suddenly think of choosing our side?”
Maxine looked at them. She detached her thin lips and answered. “I like her.”
The two men fell in silent.
"I came to like her, even though I know I should not," Maxine whispered with lack of confidence.
What Maxine meant is that she came to like Agatha as a friend, but she knew she should not because she was the one who killed Agatha’s father.
However, Lawrence and Adam misunderstood it.
The two men looked at each other.
“Is she a lesbian?” Adam asked.
“I didn’t know that my fiancée is too lovely that even women fell in love with her,” Lawrence said while rubbing his chin.
