Chapter 91: Chapter 91
“Dear, I will go home. I will prepare the baby’s room.”
“Zed, you’re just so excited! The baby will stay with Ara for as long as she is here.”
“Ara said she wouldn’t look at the baby. So that the pain of having to be away from him would be bearable for her.”
Glints of massive shock must have spread on my face because Zed rubbed my back. I couldn’t believe Ara could do that. But perhaps, she had already thought about that and I had to honor her decision. Some people appear tough on the outside, but they are too weak inside. If she couldn't handle more than her stress over Tim's betrayal now, who am I to judge her? Perhaps, all she needed was time.
The nurse picked up the baby and held it out for me. And there was the cute bundle, sleeping soundly in his sky blue bonnet and nappies!
"I can't wait to hold her, Zed!" I exclaimed, giggling.
"You have all the time to do that later. Go to sleep now since you need rest. I'll stay with Ara and you can stay in the hotel. It's just a few minutes away if she needs you."
I was already too exhausted, so I agreed with Zed. We couldn't leave Ara alone since the nurse won't be by her side all the time. But I was confident to leave her at the moment since she was still sedated. She also had a urinary catheter, and a diaper, so she didn't have to go up yet and do bathroom trips.
And I fell asleep indeed after a quick shower at the hotel. At around four in the morning, my phone vibrated. I picked it up from the bedside table and saw that it was Ara calling.
"Ar, are you okay?"
"Where are you, Yen? I'm already dying. Please take care of my baby."
I jolted out of my bed and scrambled to my feet. I grabbed a jacket and sprinted towards Ara's room. And when I opened the door, my eyes fell on the doctors and nurses who looked like they were panicking.
"Have you secured three units of PRBC (Packed Red Blood Cells)?" the doctor asked one of the code team. Her left hand was massaging Ara's lower abdomen while his other hand was inside Ara's vaginal canal.
"Yes, doc. Mr. Ramos is already at the lab."
"Are our inotropes already running?"
"Yes, doc."
"Bring the emergency kit closer. Aside from the oxytocin drip, hook another line of Plain NSS and run it at a moderate fast drip."
"Vital signs?"
"Palpatory 60, doc!"
The doctors ordered more, but I couldn't understand anymore. It seemed that the vital signs mentioned by one of those around made them set into more aggressive motion. She mentioned Cytotec, a familiar name related to abortion. I just didn't know how she used it.
I moved my eyes between Ara and the doctor. Ara looked so pale and lifeless while the doctor and everyone around looked frightened. I wanted to scream in hysteria, but I didn't want to distract them.
When I saw a pool of fresh blood and dark blood clots that the doctor evacuated from inside Ara, I started to shake. The shaking was so intense that the side of my knees already clashed against each other.
I dropped myself at Ara's bedside across from the medical team and reached out for her hand. I then whispered a prayer and asked God to intervene. My tears flowed endlessly, but somehow I managed to cry silently.
"Thanks, God! The uterus has contracted already and the bleeding has stopped."
It was then at that moment that I was already unable to hold back myself.
"Doc, what's happening to my best friend?" My voice already cracked and in the next moment, I was already sobbing.
"She's having uterine atony. It means the uterus has stopped contracting and that resulted in uterine bleeding. Thankfully, she has a companion who rushed to call our attention. Because uterine atony could come without a warning."
"When I called and told you I felt like dying, Zed bolted out of the room and called the nurses," Ara suddenly replied in a hoarse voice, although her eyes were closed.
"Thanks to both of you who stayed by me, Ar. Or else, I could have passed away silently." Ara continued, her voice now cracking.
I bent over, covering her mouth. "Don't say that. Silly."
"My child will be in good hands, anyway."
A nurse came in and brought a bag of blood. Since the nurse had to make another intravenous line, I stood up to give way for her. The doctor also stood up and she gestured for me to follow her outside. And once we're there, she said,
"Let's pray that the bleeding will stop. As of the moment, we have given her the medication to stop the bleeding."
My thoughts flew away as the doctor explained. I no longer understood what she said after. I would have asked what caused the disorder, but my mind couldn't absorb it anymore. What was more important was that Ara was still alive.
When the doctor left, I went to the nursery. And I smiled when I saw Zed standing outside, staring at the baby. I really admired him for caring for the baby. Those who didn't know would think he was the father.
"How's Ara?" Zed asked as soon as he saw me.
"I talked to the baby and told him to be strong for his mom."
"Silly."
"I also asked the doctor to let Ara see the baby so that she'll survive."
"But Ara doesn't like it," I protested.
"We have to insist."
Suddenly, the nurse opened the window. Her eyes registered fear.
"Sir! Sir! The doctor needs you both in the mother's room right now!"
I felt my heart pushing out of my thoracic cage. There was nothing else in my thoughts aside from thinking that something bad happened to Ara again.
Zed ran immediately towards Ara's room while my legs wobbled again. But despite my trembling, I still tried my best to follow Zed. And when I opened the door, I heard the doctor said,
"We have to transfer her to the ICU."
