Chapter 103: Chapter 103
JUNE
Despite everything I was told, I wasn't ready to believe them until Favour suggested we have a DNA test, which Henry and I readily agreed to.
According to the doctor, getting a result would take about twenty-four hours. So, I exchanged my number with them. They offered to drive me home, but I refused. Instead, I took a cab home, with my mind still on what I just learned.
Should what Henry said turn out to be the truth, it could only mean that.....
Kristen and I aren't related!
What great news this will be. Now, we won't have to worry about the public and what they have to say about our relationship.
I paid the cab driver with the only money I had left, grateful those damned thugs didn't touch it.
Kristen wasn't in the house when I returned, so I hurriedly plugged my phone into the wall socket to power it up. I forgot to charge it last night, so it went off around mid-afternoon when I was still at the hospital.
The moment I switched the phone on, I was bombarded with notifications. 20 messages from Mark and 15 from Kristen. Before I could click on Kristen's messages, my phone started ringing.
“Hell—”
“Where the hell are you, Doll?!” Kristen hollered.
I winced at the sharpness of his tone, grateful I didn't place the phone on my left ear.
“At home,” I managed to say amidst the noises in the background.
“Home? Like at home? In our house?”
I rolled my eyes at his questions, “Of course. Where else do you think I will be in?”
“Thank God! Stay there, baby girl, I will come get you.”
I disconnected, sat on the couch, and decided to wait for him. The run-in I had with the thugs only earned me a plaster on my right cheek, and bruises. I was only given a tablet of painkillers and was told to go over tomorrow for another check-up.
Luckily, I didn't break a rib. Else, I might have still been at the hospital and caused Kristen to worry.
He might act all strong and mighty, but I know just how much he was affected by what happened to me in the female restroom.
It wasn't even up to 10 minutes after I disconnected the call before I heard the sound of his car. Two minutes later, he barged into the house, looking like a possessed person, with Mark and Edith close on his heels.
“June!” He rushed over to me. “What happened to you? How did this happen?”
“It's okay,” I smiled to ease his worries. “I'm good now. It's just something—”
“June!”
Both Edith and Mark raced to my side.
“How are you, June?” Mark asked, looking guilty.
“Thank God, you are okay!” Edith sighed, “I was worried about—”
“Can I have a moment alone with Kristen?” I interrupted, turning to face Mark.
“June, you—”
“I will give you a call later, Mark. But for now, I need to speak with Kristen, alone.” I made sure to emphasize on the 'alone.
“Okay, then. I'm glad you are okay. Give me a call later, okay?” He made a calling gesture, and I nodded. With a smile, he turned and left, gently closing the door behind him.
“Darling, what's wrong? Why were you—”
“Which part of 'I need to speak to my uncle, alone' evaded you?” I smiled sweetly at her, trying not to raise a brow at her choice of clothing. I just wonder how someone can dress so indecently to work.
“Oh,” she placed her right palm on her mouth, taken aback by my peaceful outburst. “Well… I will see you later, Kristen.” She smiled at me before she turned and left, slamming the door with a bang.
“What's wrong, Doll? Why do you wish to speak to me alone?” Kristen asked, looking intently at me. Despite my words of reassurance to him, he still looked super worried about me.
“I think we need to sit for this,” I said and gestured towards the couch.
With a nod of his head, he led me towards the nearest couch and helped me sit.
“So….”
I took a deep breath, gathering all my thoughts and the courage before I exhaled.
“Do you know Mary?”
Out of all the questions I wanted to start with, I can't tell why I chose that one. It could be that I'm still jealous of the dead woman, who might or might not be my mother.
Kristen froze. The shock was clearly written on his face.
“What about her?” he gulped, trying to act normal.
“Was she a friend of your sister?”
He raised a brow, “My sister? Isn't she like your mother?”
“Just answer my question. Do you know her?”
He sighed and let go of my hand for a second before he took it up. “Yes, I know her. She was my sister's best friend in college. And….” He nervously swallowed.
From the way he was acting, I could already tell what the next parts of his words would be.
“... I dated her when I was in high school. It wasn't a good match, but it was….”
“You loved her,” I tightly clenched my fists.
“She was my past.” He placed his hand on mine and gently squeezed. “You don't have to be jealous of her, June. You are the only one I love.” He placed his hand under my jaw, and made me look up at him, “I love you, June. Now and forever.” He leaned down and pecked the sides of my mouth. “Now, why did you ask about her? Who told you of Mary?”
He looked curious.
“I will tell you later,” I smiled, winking awkwardly.
I just hope the test proves positive. This way, I will get to tell him the best news of all.
“Now, I'm anxious to know what it is. And….” He frowned, “what happened to you at the park? How did you end up wounded?”
“I can't tell. I was attacked by thugs, and…"
“You were what?” He rose from the couch, looking down at me with a scowl. “Why the hell did you keep all that to yourself?!”
