Chapter 721: Chapter 721
Alma finished her duties half an hour after Mira started eating ice cream, and five minutes after Mira left the balcony and went back inside. It had taken Alma a bit longer than planned to free herself, and the first thing she saw when she entered the room were seven empty boxes on the table, and Mira lying blissfully on the sofa.
“Nah, I’m fine. It takes a lot more than this to take down my stomach!”
Mira quickly raised her body and announced that with a lively voice, then adding “They were all delicious” with a chuckle.
Alma was half baffled and half resigned as she just shook her head, walking over to sit in front of Mira and changing topics, saying “So about your bodyguard mission…”
In response Mira quickly sat up straight to listen more carefully. They were no longer talking about ice cream, but one of the biggest secrets of the empire.
They began by recapping their talks from the previous day, and then moved on to discuss the expected effects from that mission.
“I doubt they’ll act right away once they find out we’ve switched bodyguards, and instead try to watch from a distance to gain more information. Hopefully.”
Once Mira became the oracle’s bodyguard, the enemy would likely spend a few days trying to get a grasp of the situation.
Mira still needed to be ready in the off-chance they attacked right away, and nodded as the thought of countermeasures.
They continued talking about things, and eventually began discussing more personal things about the oracle.
She was a fourteen year old girl called Iris, and was quite the spirited girl despite being branded with a serious title like oracle.
“Tonight is her scheduled time to use her power, so we’ll tell her about you being her new bodyguard at that time too.”
Iris’ special power allowed her to read what someone else did and was thinking of doing, just by touching an item deeply linked to the target, like a strand of hair.
Its biggest strength was that there was no time limit to it, allowing her to continue reading a target for as long as the item was available, providing updated information.
Thanks to that power, one of the main leaders of Ira Muerte, He Who Commands the Dark Routes, August Gradin, had been largely hamstrung on the things he could do.
The only downside was that the longer that power was used, the more the target would also start to obtain information back from the oracle.
That was how August found out about the oracle and sent out assassins after her. On top of that, he used rather nasty means to terrorize the oracle, leading to her developing a phobia towards men and becoming afraid of Noin, one of the Twelve Apostles and her bodyguard, who could no longer fulfill his duty properly. That was when Mira arrived, who was just as effective as Noin, and relieved him of his duty. That was a summary of the events leading to the present time.
Mira’s job was to be the oracle’s new bodyguard for the duration of the tournament. If everything went well, then Alma’s Twelve Apostles and secret service would finish sniffing out the remaining members of Ira Muerte and catching them.
It would obviously be a complex operation, but that was the gist of it.
“By the way, what happened with the assassins I caught before? Were you able to get any useful information out of them?”
Once they were done talking about the oracle, Mira suddenly brought that up.
Mira had randomly ran into a group of assassins who were already trying to get to the oracle, and ended up discovering and taking over their entire hideout. Their leader had been a man called Jorg, who seemed to be deeply knowledgeable about their organization.
“Mm, about that…he’s really good at keeping his mouth shut, so it’s not really going the best.”
Alma let out a sigh as she replied. They had tried questioning him a lot, but he would not let out a single word. He even turned out to be resistant to various truth serums.
“He was probably trained just for such situations. Even our strongest drug only made him grin at us, so it’s going to take some time before we can get something out of him.”
Alma added that they were currently using a different drug to lower his immunity to truth serums, which eventually should make them work on him and get him to confess.
The only issue was that the drug could be dangerous when administered too quickly, and it would take around two months before Jorg would speak.
“Two months seems like a lot of time.”
“Ideally I’d like to get more information before the tournament starts in earnest…since all of our collaborators will arrive by then, but we’re stumped here.”
Jorg potentially had access to information relating to the spies currently infiltrating Nirvana, their identity, and what role they had taken. Maybe even information on which part of the tournament staff was being targeted the most.
There was also a chance he had been in contact with the higher-ups of Ira Muerte and could offer more insight on who they were, making his knowledge very valuable.
Sadly it would take a long time before they were successful with the interrogation. In her frustration, Alma even joked about using banned drugs to force him to confess, which seemed to help her calm down and think more reasonably again.
