• • • Sheila’s POV• • • •
Once the gate opens, we see maids helplessly working up and down decorating the terrace and the inner part of the house. I'm just “wow! wow!” because the number of maids are enormous for just a house.
My scrutinizing gaze quickly goes around the Luxurious Mansion and I'm simply flabbergasted. I keep starting through the window of the car; the house is like different apartment fixed on a large artifice with beautiful windows and doors made of mirror-like glasses, omg! It just looks like a dream.
Natasha parks in the car then she hurry out once she perceives her mum who gets out of the house once she heard the sound from the car.
I remain seated in the car, amazed and intimidated by the grandeur of the arena. How I wishing my mum was here to witness all this with me because telling her through the phone will not have the same feeling as living it.
“Sheila!” Nat waves me out of the car then she whirls back and embraces her mother who has a glass of red wine in her hand.
“Sheila!” she turns back urging me out of the car this time with both mended stares at me. But that of her mum is seriously confused yet she remains calm with a query gaze fixed at me.
I get back to my mind when Natasha shouts for the third time and I confusingly step out of the car and I started feeling ashamed of myself once I finally notice their fixed stares at me.
“Good morning Ma’am!” I bow at Nat’s mum “You need not!” she pauses her hands on my shoulder halting me from bowing “Thank you, Ma’am” I retort with my trembling voice crammed with so much deference that she can help but giggles while sipping her wine.
She swerves her gaze at Natasha then back at me “What's going on here? are we in a sort of olden days royal movie?. Haha…” she clamours and walks back into the house and we follow her.
She pauses in the leaving home waiting for Natasha and I to meet her.
“There isn't much work to do in the house since the maids have done all the necessary already and now they're simply rounding up. So you both can go upstairs and have some fun while waiting for the event to start. I will be in my room working if you girls need me. I got a lot of work to catch up with” with that she moves to her upstairs then she pauses for some seconds.
“Your dad is not around yet. And there is much food in the kitchen, take anything you like.” she adds then she keeps climbing the stairs leading to her room.
“Of course, mum!” Natasha happily screams. As soon as she entered her room and locked the door behind her we scramble to the Kitchen, we get some chips, light things to spend time with. We then move to Natasha’s room.
I get flabbergasted when we get into her room which is more than a five stars hotel room. The room is vast and well decorated with lots of shiny things. “Why do you rent when you have such a big and glamorous room here?” I can't help but ask.
“Privacy baby girl!. Privacy!” she recklessly retorts while falling in bed like it isn't a big deal. Anyway, for her it isn't a big deal.
“Oh! You can lock your room and stay in, no one will know what you’re doing!” I follow her in bed. The bed is very big, very soft and comfortable.
“Sheila, don't be ridiculous, you speak like my mum!. As a young lady like me you best know how privacy is important. Is not everything I do that I want my parents to be aware of!” she started eating the chips we took from the kitchen.
“Its just that back then in my country, I was sharing a tiny room with my mum and all I ever prayed for was just to have a room for myself! hahaha... At least now the poor woman is having space” I smile at how quick life can change.
“Oh, I'm sorry about that!” she feels pity for me and I hate this feeling. “You don't have to!” I smile at her.
“Okay, Fine!. How’s your mum then? You always talk about her but you have never made presentation. I hope I will get to see her one day!”
“She’s fine by the grace of God and we chart nearly every week thou you're never around” I tease her though it's true at the same time.
“Oh! It's simply because you don't want me to talk with her because you’re scared I will tell her all the bad things you do here” she hits me with the pillow “Ouch!” I scream acting like it was painful but it wasn't.
“Lol! she won't believe you in the first place. She knows how well she has trained her daughter” I laugh at her.
“Is that what you think? Trust me I can be very persuasive” she claims. “Instead that is what you think!” I laugh at her then she keeps persuading me on how persuasive she can be and it's definitely not persuading at all. Before we could realise it we fell asleep.
.
.
A few hours later Natasha’s mum barges into the room “Wake up girls it's time“ she gentles tapped us. We rapidly shuddered out of sleep shocked like we weren't understanding how we fell asleep. We reluctantly got out of bed.
Her mum waited in the room until we completely woke up “Get ready fast!” she kissed Natasha and she gave me a gentle squeeze on the shoulders then left the room. I guess to go and round up with her preparations.
When she left we rapidly exchange and Natasha makes me some light makeup on the face. “Natasha, you’re wasting a lot of time on this make up“ in her turn, she wasts a lot of time.
“Good Make up takes time baby!” teases me then rounds up with her face. I'm all set and just waiting on her to finish so that we can meet the rest of the people down.
Once she is finally done we step down to the party hall where the music is flat and classic thou kind of boring for me. Anyway, it's just the beginning they might change the music later and above all increase the volume.
When we stepped down, we found Natasha mum and Dad happily smiling at us as they were watching us moving in their direction.
We hurried and greeted them then I excused myself since I guess they have things to talk about as a family. However, this is how I was educated always to give space especially when you’re inferior to avoid unnecessary reminders or embarrassments so that you don't end up claiming to be the victim, etc. So people call it downgrading one’s self but my mum calls it self respect.
They were all smiling at me when I left but the smile on her dad's face sounds like a fake one to me. It doesn't bother me much. I stood by the corner and I took a drink.
“Why did you have to come with her?. This is a very big party only reserved to important personality not hotel maids! Or perhaps you’ve seen any other hotel maids around” Natasha dad yells at her in a low then.
“Dad she’s my friend before being your maid! And it's not like her life is centred only on working for your hotel. She’s a student above all!” Natasha scowls at her dad's harsh tone.
“Come, darling it's our daughter’s friend!” Her mum intervenes “Relax! today it's your day and you don't have to be stressed!” her mum adds while fixing the tie on his neck.
“Thank you, mum!. Dad don't be too hard on her!. Today you have a plus one giving to you by the Almighty, many people are dying, some are in the hospital while are jubilating, so please be kind to her, Dad. Promise me that you will be?” Natasha insists
“Don't be silly!” he scowls. “Just do it darling it causes you nothing !” her mum still helps her yet her dad hesitates but both keep insisting.
“Ok, ok fine!. I will try but I promise nothing!” he says “Good start!” Natasha exclaims and her mum simply nods with a smile like they weren't even expecting more.
“Happy Birthday daddy! I love you!” Natasha kisses him and she leaves. She comes to me. I was already tired of staying alone and bored at the same time.
