Chapter 32: Chapter 32
David’s P.O.V.
It felt like all I wanted to do now was to protect Helena’s name no matter what. I didn’t want her name to be linked to any kind of issues—might it be an issue about me. And at an instant, I saw her from the distance smiling and waving at me. Jenny was even tickling her waist while she was blissfully sitting on the grass while eating.
From that simple view, I smiled at the thought of who just stole my heart without even doing anything, who had the capability to bother my mind just to make me think about her unstoppably, and who always made me feel these unexplainable heartbeats. Strange, but that was where I found my real happiness.
I know, I’m already falling for her.
But my thoughts were interrupted when Vanessa suddenly hugged me from behind. And I guessed, her arms tightly wrapped around my torso were the main reason why Helena’s smile slowly faded away. Helena even glanced away and what made me enraged was when she talked to Brent with the same smile she was giving me!
“Please, Dave… let’s start all over again. I want you back. Please choose me again. I promise you, I will love you unconditionally. I will never make you feel betrayed again, and I won’t ever lie to you again. Just one more chance. Please, Dave. I beg you, just choose me.” She was already sobbing at my back.
While gritting my teeth, I slowly unclasped her arms around me. “Fix yourself, Vanessa. We are here for our Annual Camp, not to tolerate whatever feelings that you may still have. After everything that happened, your feelings only became one-sided. I could not reciprocate it anymore, and no matter what you do, it couldn’t go anywhere because what we have was already over! We are done, and you have to accept it.” Those were the last words that I told her before I finally left her.
At some point, I wanted to pity her, but in the whole process, I didn’t want myself to be fooled again. After all, it was better to stay cold and blunt than giving her false hopes because we already had a zero percent chance of reconciliation.
Trying to lift my mood, I sat down next to Helena and was surprised when she handed me a paper plate full of different kinds of food. There were rice, chop suey, barbequed pork liempo, chicken adobo, grilled squid, and pork menudo. There was even a separate bowl for mushroom soup.
“I thought that you two would take quite long to talk, so I decided to save you this. Hmm, you might be running out of food, and I don’t want the game master to be hungry later on.” Then, she beatifically smiled at me—a kind of smile that would make me fall for her even more.
“Woah, someone already finished the fight! And someone was surely envious here. Helena even saved Dave some food even though he just talked to his ex-girlfriend earlier. What can you say about it, Brent? You don’t even have a single chance left. I guessed you would die hopeless!” I heard Jack intervened while teasing Brent.
“Yeah, I agree with you, and I was quite jealous. I was thinking that Mrs. Cheng should have chosen me to be paired up with Helena on this Annual Camp project, instead of Dave…” Brent replied. I could not see their facial expressions since they were behind us, but I knew for sure that Brent was even smirking.
“Will you please shut up?” Helena roared at them, from which they immediately silenced.
“Let them be. Anyway, thanks for this. I truly appreciate this gesture of yours, Helena.” I had decided not to shoot back at Brent and his friends.
“Oh, it’s nothing! You just have to treat me to a one-month lunch to repay for this. But kidding aside, I hope you enjoy your food.” She was still elegantly smiling when she playfully poked my nose.
Nothing could beat her lovely smile, and it was attracting me closer to her. Even if she wanted a year-long free lunch, I would do it if that was the only way I could be with her.
Feeling odd, I did not know why, but I could sense butterflies suddenly occupied my stomach. Maybe because this was the only day—among from the days we spent together—that I wasn’t yet able to get any dosage of her tantrums. She was not yet acting so mad, as if she doesn’t know how to walk out!
Soon enough, our lunch ended, and the first obstacle race for Junior students had started. While Helena was giving the mechanics, I just could not help but gaze at her. I guessed I was being mesmerized by her simple beauty. She had a green pair of eyes everyone would adore. Her natural brown hair, wonderfully ponytailed at the back of her sun visor cap, was smoothly being swayed by fresh air while the sun made it even shinier.
Silently thanking God that the typhoon went away, I guessed we still had to be ready, in case the clouds would pour some raindrops again. Even though Helena was already sweating underneath the sun, she doesn’t care about it, and she was still giving the mechanics to those nasty students who were only mimicking what she was saying. My eyebrows furrowed when I could not hear anything from them aside from asking Helena to repeat the mechanics for the umpteenth time already!
Well, it looks like they have a crush on her. Hmm, let’s see!
I came closer to Helena and quickly snatched the paper where the game mechanics was written. “Hey, you are already sweating, and you seemed to be so tired already. Get rest over there, and I’ll take charge on this.” I pointed out the monoblock chair that I was sitting on earlier.
“No, I’m still fine. I’m okay, Cristoff. Don’t worry about me,” she said with a smile reaching her spectacular green eyes.
“I said you have to rest for a while. You just came from an illness, and I don’t want you to get sick again. You are a Medic Executive Commander, not a patient.” I seriously instructed Helena, leaving her with no other choice but to nod and follow me.
“Okay, if that’s what you want…” she meekly responded.
Then, I continued reading the game mechanics in front of those male and third-year students. They ended up pouting their lips and scratching their heads on what I did—removing the gorgeous medic in front of them. I smiled evilly. Now, they could not spoil their eyes anymore by looking closely at Helena from head to toe!
“So do you understand now, juniors? Is there anything unclear? Do you have any questions, or do I still need to recall what I already explained to all of you?” I asked them pompously.
As one of the Senior officers and with Corps Commander highest rank in the Citizenship Army Training, the Junior students should respect me whether they liked it or not. If they would not listen to me, I was so easy to talk to because I always had the right to give them a punishment of fifty push-ups in an instant!
“Understood, sir! We don’t have any more questions,” answered those who were in front—the same students who kept on asking Helena to repeat the same game mechanics a while ago.
“Good!” I said as I pushed my chest out and held my head up high, showing pride.
