Chapter 8: Chapter 8

Maya stared at the monstrous Sky Scrapper already feeling intimidated.

She turned towards Jasmine surprised to see fear and nervousness in her defiant green eyes, which she was doing a terrible job trying to hide with an unconvincing smile that looked so much like a wince. Jessica seemed unfazed by her surroundings and it made sense since, after all, she was a part of this world, Maya thought.

The clicking of heels against the tiled floor, the clack clack clack of the computers, the cold piercing stare of the workers as they occasionally looked up from their computers to look at the,m and the insolent way they disregarded her and Jasmine sensing they had no business being in such an establishment.

Maya was internally grateful that Jasmine and Jessica had made her change even though she would never tell them that, but in her former outfit, she would have looked out of place. She sighed, it was not like anything she was wearing was expensive compared to the designer clothes people were wearing in there.

She and Jasmine exchanged looks, it was like they had stepped into a different world altogether Maya thought not even trying to hide her nervousness while Jasmine offered her another smile that was supposed to be encouraging but only made her even more uneasy.

Jessica walked on with sure quick strides in front of them, her steps not even faltering for a second oblivious to their discomfort as she offered a nod, a smile,e ora wave when necessary.

A blonde tall guy who had the cute nerdy package going well for him waved at her ecstatically making her stop in her tracks. Beaming at him she headed towards his direction while they both followed. She introduced him to them as the IT manager who unlike the others had a nice smile and didn't give them a quick appraisal from head to toe and sneer.

He chuckled at how Jessica had introduced him.

"I'm Alex, I guess they would want to know that first before knowing my position." He stated jokingly while Jasmine and Maya chuckled.

He was able to thaw the icy nervous feeling that Maya had going on within seconds as she found herself chuckling and even laughing at his wiseass funny comebacks to Jessica's comments. Jasmine was also a fan of his quirky personality as her green orbs flickered in amusement at their back and forth banter.

Maya could tell he had a huge crush on Jessica though, the signals were way too obvious, ruffling his hair, his sweaty palms, the way he adjusted and readjusted his glasses and smiled way too much at everything she said.

She shook her head knowing how clueless Jessica could be when it comes to"such matters" and pitied Alex knowing that it would take forever for Jessica to notice him.

Jasmine discreetly nudge her shoulder raising her brows at the animated conversation between the two, obviously catching up with Maya's discovery as Maya shook her head wondering why hard it was for Jessica to see what was right in front of her.

"Maya right?"

Realizing she had zoned out, she blushed embarrassed and looked up to meet Alex's amused green eyes starring at her, making her remember the intense cold blue eyes that were a complete opposite to his heartwarming innocent glance but she would pick it anytime.

She snapped out of her thoughts berating herself for even thinking about him. She nodded smiling back at him.

"Who is the unlucky assistant?" A middle-aged woman with a bored expression asked as she approached them, her stare hard as she scrutinized the three girls.

Jessica nervously pointed at Maya, the intimidating aura of the strange woman's icy stare felt by her. Maya glared at her, so much for friendship and sisterhood huh!

Laura Roberts, HR department manager, an asset of Salvador Inc that has watched the business grow into the empire it was today. She was just 16 years old, a victim of abuse, a drug addict with little or no experience of what was acceptable in a working environment or not, but M.r Louis Salvador had accepted her, had given her a job as his assistant despite her fucked up past, he had funded heart-time schooling.

She owed him her life as he gave her life a meaning, that's why she had dedicated her life to serving him and even his successors. She had worked for M.r Louis' son who was a pig of a man and was currently working for his grandson who reminded her of the devil with his evil blank glance and cold disposition towards everyone.

Maya studied the woman, although she was middle-aged she could still make heads turn, with her 6ft or something towering height over her much shorter frame, blonde hair adorned with strands of grey hair, a flawless tanned skin, long legs, and a pointed straight nose, her feminine beauty was so striking yet her calculative glance, the way her cheeks curve slowly into a smile as she overthinks every little gesture, her icy glance that makes it seem like she could see right through you was enough to tell Maya that underneath all her feminine camouflage was power.

The great power that only an intelligent woman who knew too much and has too much to offer could wield. Maya could feel instant respect for her even though she seemed frustrated and didn't try to hide the disappointment in her eyes as she sized her unimpressed, as she doubted the clueless girl in front of her would last more than a minute when many experienced people have been fired within hours.

"I won't sugar-coat this, he has fired two assistants in less than three days and he has been more grumpy than usu,l," she commented.

Maya blinked freezing.

Was she trying to make her scared and run with her tail in between her legs without looking back cause she was succeeding Maya though?.

Laura scoffed, shaking her head not even having the time to deal with a girl who was under shock knowing that her new job was almost over on the first day. She held Maya's hand almost dragging her to the elevator frowning.

Maya sighed biting her lower lip as they waited inside the elevator, knowing how unlucky she was, she bet she won't even last for an hour.

Immediately they stepped into the glass-tiled lobby, Maya sighed dreamily gaping at the top floor.

The view from up there was breathing taking as she could see the cityscapes owing to the glass pane of the window and doors.

"I'm Laura Roberts, I am the HR manager, welcome to Salvador In... And you are not the first person I have fed this line to for the same position, there have been many before you and I just hope for my mental health that there won't be any after you." Laura stated as she pointed at a cubicle with Maya's name boldly written on a glass pane.

"Maya Luke Vanessa" Laura whispered smirking at her.

Maya ran her hand on the table already loving the fact that she has her own space, and the name on the desk only made her feel more possessive even though she knew it could easily be removed and replaced, even though she knew another person's name was previously engraved on a pane too.

"Don't get too comfortable." Mrs. Laura reprimanded as Maya settled into the plush comfortable chair almost purring the artist's comfy leather.

"It's time to meet Xavier." She coldly added a nervous look on her face that she immediately tried to mask with a Stern look.

Mrs. Laura mumbled something incoherent that Maya could bet ended with fuck.

After knocking without any response, she pushed open the double glass door, entering inside the office without turning to check if Maya was following her.

The interior of the Ceo's office was simple yet so beautiful, Maya observed, with gray and wooden walls, computer sitting idly on his table with chairs for visitors and bookcases with folders.

The office was directly facing the city and the cityscape was even more beautiful from there.

The walls though were empty, lifeless, no pictures or any intricate design or overly expensive artwork that nobody understands but was painted by a famous artist, making the room even bigger and intimidating, not giving any hint of the personality of the man who was so feared and yet so loved at the same time.

Maya smiled internally grateful that he wasn't in his office, at least she would have time to prepare herself mentally before meeting her new boss who was able to ruffle the poise gracefulness of the woman next to her.

A door creaked open, it was perfectly carved into the building that it was hardly noticeable.

Maya held her breath, hiding behind Mrs. Laura.

The air changed and even Maya could feel his intimidating yet familiar brooding presence as Mrs. Laura straightened to her full gait.

She cleared her throat and with a surprising very polite tone Maya never thought Mrs. Laura had in her, she greeted him.

"I'm here with your new assistant." She politely informed him.

"I hope it isn't another inefficient bastard?"

Maya's eyes widened, she knew that voice she thought, that masculine deep sexy voice that could just make you weak on your knees.

She was transfixed to the spot.

And that was when Mrs. Laura decided to step aside and Maya gasped.

"Fuck." She cursed as her bag fell from her hand.

The beautiful stranger was her boss.

Talk about luck or lack of it!
