Chapter 127: Chapter 127

You don't like Maya or want her

"So what you both are trying to say is that the whole thing is off?" Lauren the host of today's news gawk at them, her eyes widened like they had just told her that the world was coming to an end tomorrow.

Maya nodded, "We weren't compatible and __"

"We were very much compatible just that, I'm a scum and it seems like I'll be towing the playboy for life path."

Maya glared at him even as she gazed at Lauren who had not been expecting this when out of the blue Xavier had agreed on an interview she had been pestering him for since the news of his engagement came, giving her a long sigh.

"See?" Her smile seemed defeated and weak, "We can't even agree that we weren't even compatible. That's how incompatible we were and he is just lying to spite me," Xavier eyed her wondering what she was insinuating by her last line.

That was not part of their script. He has gone through this with her. He was supposed to be the reason for everything. He'd given her the easy way out of the mess he had put them in. Play the victim and pin everything on him.

He had been slightly disturbed by her compatible theory and was trying to correct that but now, she was creating a whole different angle which Lauren caught up to immediately, smiling like Maya had just given her the moon.

"What do you mean by he is lying to spite you. We all saw the picture of him going into a hotel with two women," she gave Xavier a sidelong glance of disdain while he shrugged, acting the part of the bastard everyone hated that they loved.

Maya exhaled and shook her head a bit dramatically, while Xavier stared at her distracted by how pale and make-up-free her face was. She had gone on national TV rejecting every attempt to be plucked at or coated with mascara yet somehow he still couldn't keep his eyes off her, still thought she looked perfect anyway "To spite me of course! Think about it, if a man like Xavier wants to cheat, he'll do it well and not like some amateur," she scoffed, then glanced at Xavier and he could tell she was being serious with the look on her face, "Xavier is scum, but not scum enough to bang those chicks when we are still together. He can never do that."

Xavier stared at her transfixed that even at that moment she was defending him. She had seen the pictures, knew that they weren't together when that had happened, what was he saying? They have never been together. Yet with no questions asked, no hesitation she believed without a doubt that he didn't have anything to do with them.

It was in her eyes, blind Faith and trust that made him want to hit himself for ever attempting to hurt her.

The remaining of the interview was spent with Maya refuting every of his attempt to pin their breakup on him alone and it was frustrating how Lauren was keen on ignoring him and believing every word Maya had to say but one thing was clear at the end of the interview despite it not going as he had planned. The whole of New York City was aware that there would be no destination wedding or little Xavier and Maya.

Maya unclipped the wireless microphone on her body and stood up immediately after they went off air.

"Maya," Xavier stood up running after her.

He stopped Midway, his eyes full of unhidden rage not only because Maya was crying but because of the very person she had run into his hand to seek comfort. Jared.

He took a step towards them but felt a hand holding his, he turned just noticing his sister who slightly shook her head, signaling that it was a bad idea.

"You are here?" His voice was mixed with both shock and irritation that she was on his way.

"Yes, I had to."

He shrugged, "It went well," he mumbled deciding to tell her how everything had gone and hopefully get her on her way home.

She smiled. "You know at first when I saw how shattered you were after you confessed to me that nothing was happening between you and Maya, I thought you liked her and was beginning to know what it felt like to want something." He raised his brow not understanding where she was going with the sudden conversation.

She took his tux from him which he had immediately removed after the interview and was now on his white shirt, holding it with one hand and the other she used in holding his hand and pulling him outside even as he fought the urge not to free himself from her grasp and storm towards Maya. But a few minutes later, after he was done seething he was much grateful to Melissa for stopping him because what would he have said to her?

She was free to be with whomever she wanted, that was one of the reasons behind the interview. To set her free from his image and he had. Damn... It hurt like hell.

"Thank you for stopping me from walking towards them, I'd have made a fool out of myself."

She smiled, "I stopped you from making more than just a fool out of yourself." She held his hand and he wondered when he became so soft because he did crave the contact, the strength.

"I came to a conclusion while I watched you both on TV, a conclusion that anyone who had eyes would reach today. A fact that I already knew but thought you both were just good actors when I realized the truth,"

He looked away, not knowing what she was driving at and too drained mentally to comprehend her riddled words.

"You don't like Maya or want her."

His eyes widened, even as he swiveled his head now facing Melissa hope in his eyes, and at that point, he won't be offended if she told him he was going through a special obsessive mental illness and he'd have gladly signed up for therapy if it rid him of the agonizing pain of watching Maya with someone else, of thinking of her happy with someone that wasn't him.

"You think so."

She sniffed and nodded. Was it that bad he thought, his mental illness that it produced tears from her eyes, he wondered.

"Yes. Because," her hold on his hand tightened, "You love her and need her."
