Chapter 34: Chapter 34
He laughed darkly as I was just telling him a joke. "I'm not joking!" I insisted.
He laughed again at my second statement, "I'm not lying!" I tried on assuring him, "I'm your best friend."
"You're dreaming too high to be my best friend Jazzlin. I think you're out of your mind."
Did I do something wrong with telling him this secret? Though I thought he would believe it.
I thought hard about what evidence I could show him until I found something that would make him to believe in me, "You will believe me if you can see my signature. You know clearly your friend's signature and written form right?" I challenged him.
Great idea, right? No one in the world would have the same handwriting and signature style. It would be easier to convince him.
He looked surprised to hear me but for a moment he smirked, "Let's just see." He looked at the other men, "Ron, get me a pen with a blank paper." His orders were to the man who immediately carried out his duties.
It didn't take long, the man returned with what he had been ordered to bring.
"Write." Haytham ordered me.
I took the pen and white paper then started writing. He sighed sharply when he saw my first writing until word by word I continued writing.
"Impossible." He whispered softly too softly.
"This is the last one." I gave him my signature that time. Haytham knew exactly what my signature looked like because he was the one who taught me how to make autographs.
"No." He pushed me and then he rubbed his temples, "This is impossible! You're a cheater Jazzlin! You tricked me! No!"
"Trust me just once, I am her!" I sounded so desperately. I had no idea how to make him believe me.
"Janielle died five years ago! How dare you try to imitate her!" He was so angry but did nothing but stay still in his place.
"What do I have to do for you to believe in me?" I was already feeling tired, trying to show all the things Janielle used to do.
"You want to know how to make me believe in you?" He approached me again, "Come with me." Then he pulled me back forcefully to follow him.
I didn't know where he took me, but what I knew was I had a bad feeling about this.
There were quite a lot of men. They followed us on guard. I thought it was what was called the mafia, they were always ready with what would happen.
Their looked were also so intimidating, they were too different from Barra's men. They seemed to be trained to be tough.
I was shocked when we came out of the hospital building, I thought I would be put into one of the rooms in there. He told me to get in the car and I just obeyed without trying to fight back.
All the way I just looked down. I wondered what Barra was doing. He had the heart to just let me go. Honestly, it was really hurting me to see him couldn't choose me for being save.
He acted as if I was a stranger to him. On the one hand, I was completely in love with him. It was not only Jazzlin, but also me.
Was I too late to realize it? Especially when he didn't want to do anything else to me. He hated me. So far, Jazzlin's biggest secret had been revealed.
I was a little disappointed to know that Jazzlin was the one who crashed me, but I couldn't fight my destiny. She was destined to be the driver who killed me. I was sure if there was a choice she wouldn't want to choose to be a murderer.
But, Haytham said she didn't want to take responsibility for it... I thought that was the source of Haytham's anger all this time.
I tried to steal a glance at the man who used to steal my heart. He looked kinda calm not tense like earlier. His forehead creased, he rubbed his temples.
Was my statement really giving him a headache, huh? I guess so, even if I was in his position would I believe in me? Certainly not.
"Are you going to kill me after this all?" I dared to ask.
"You're so lame!" He replied irritably, "How can Barra stay with you without going crazy?" He rolled his eyes.
"Then tell me where are we going?" I asked again and he snorted with a deep emotion.
"I think you really are Janielle."
"You finally believe in me?" I glared at him at once.
"I'm not saying I believe in you. It's because you're nagging and ask a lot like her." He chuckled dangerously.
His statement made sense too. As far as I knew, Jazzlin was not that noisy and rambunctious.
Yeah yeah, whatever.
The journey took so long that it made me fall asleep.
As soon as I opened my eyes, I found Haytham's voice trying woke me up. I was shocked when I looked out the car window. We were in the vicinity of a cemetery.
I recognized where the cemetery was. It was the area near to my orphanage.
"What are we doing here?" Strange thoughts appeared in my head like he was going to kill me and then bury me here to remove evidence.
"Shut your big mouth." He groaned, "And firstly, hurry out of my car!"
Immediately I got out of the car and looked around the cemetery. It felt so lonely in the dark of the night.
Haytham came down with the flashlight on then pulled me to follow him again, "Hey, you want to take me inside?" I asked while walking behind him.
The hair on my neck stood up, but I just followed him. He didn't make the slightest sound, like fully ignoring me.
None of his men followed us, they were just waiting by the car. I thought the place Haytham was going to, holding a secret that his men were not allowed to come.
My eyes darted everywhere, noticing the gravestones around us. We were literally halfway between it.
Luckily I looked back at this man's back, otherwise I would bump into him for a moment he suddenly stopped in his tracks.
I frowned as we stopped at one of gravestones, "Why did you stop?" I asked then approached the tombstone.
There was a piece of writing that I was very aware of. Written there the name of a girl named Janielle Mckeen.
That was my grave.
I looked up at the man who lay stiffly standing beside me. He didn't try to do anything other than stay there.
"Now tell me how can a lifeless body let its life pass to someone else? Janielle died when the accident happened to her. It was right in front of me. Every day, I regret that I couldn't save her. Every day, her face still crosses my head. She's always in my mind. Her smile ... her laugh ... the way she used to call me... I can always feel it."
I stood up and touched his shoulder, "I never intended to hurt you by bringing all this back to haunt you ... but that's the fact .. I beg you to believe in me." I put on a pleading face so sincerely.
I took my eyes away from him, "Janielle Mckeen, a girl who has not known her parents since childhood. All she knows was her friends at the orphanage. The girl was so close to Clarissa, one of the nannies there. She was also good friends with Haytham Zachary and Alia. Those two have always been the most important part of her somehow ... but it's true. Before the accident happened, you came late to the orphanage. Usually you visited every morning, but not that day." I stopped for a moment he held my arm tightly.
But, I still continued, "Alia insisted on going to the park at that time just to meet Jennie ... her favorite cat." I chuckled wildly while my tears flowed.
He hugged me tightly, making me surprised by his actions, but when I wanted to continue my words. I stopped when I noticed a gun aimed right to Haytham.
I couldn't let him get hurt ... he was so important to me.
I closed my eyes before I launched my next action.
I pushed him away, right when the mysterious man pressed the gun, "Wait-"
*Bang*
I touched my armpit, it felt so painful and sore. Fresh blood flowed, wetting my palms. My head was dizzy, so I fell on the ground. I could vaguely hear Haytham shouting, "What the fuck." He pointed his gun to the opposite direction. I heard the sound of the gun shooting repeatedly.
"I'm so-sorry." I whispered softly as he lifted my body. My hands cupped his cheeks, making him look down at me.
"I believe you, please don't go." He said until I closed my eyes. "Damn it! Stay awake! Don't close your eyes!" I felt he shook my body. My vision was blurred and my ears were ringing. I started to lose consciousness.
"Don't close your eyes, Janielle!"
Did he just call my real name? He trusted me ... I was so happy that I put on my smile before I didn't know what else happened next.
