Chapter 31: Chapter 31
I did not make a sound made him say again, "I knew you entered my room."
I was stunned for a moment at a loss for words.
"So did you see their letter of agreement?"
I nodded slowly, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be impudent. I just missed you at that time."
His gaze stared at me blankly, "Don't worry. It's fine." He gripped his cup in deep thought. I'd never seen him think so deeply like that.
"Do you know what's it about?" I reversed his previous question that he threw at me.
He put his cup back down after he sipped, "No." The answer sounded simple but also containing a sense of curiosity.
"I wish I know." I whispered, looking around. Even though it was almost mid-night, it seemed that this cafe was still full of customers who came.
"I feel something is wrong." Barra returned his gaze to me, "I feel like there's something hidden from me."
His face was filled with various emotions. It was so heart breaking to see his eyes, they were filled with sadness.
"I don't like it when the people closest to me keep something from me." He said bluntly, "And I hate having to investigate their secrets through my men."
My heart stirred to hear his confession. I guess everyone also didn't like it when the people closest to us were hiding something, but secrets were hidden on purpose to not hurting those who didn't know.
Should I tell him that I'm not Jazzlin?
"I have one question for you too." I also hated to keep things from him so I dared to ask, "Who really is Mr. Salvatore?"
He showed his calmness as if he used to hear the question, but I was sure he was surprised to hear it from me.
He sighed, "He's not a good man."
I frowned, "You don't need to tell me about it, I knew. I mean what's he doing behind his legal business?"
His pupils dilated, "You know about it?"
I nodded silently, "Moorah told me something about him." I shrugged like it wasn't a big deal.
"Moorah?" It seemed like hearing Moorah and I knew all it made him really shocked like he had a heart attack. Maybe it was because Moorah and I were incompatible and always bickering.
Barra took a deep breath and started explaining everything from the start. This was indeed a man who was full of secrets. If I didn't ask I might not know what happened in his life all this time.
"Human trafficking?" I couldn't believe what I had just heard. And, Haytham had already formed a kinship with his family. What had you done Haytham?
Barra explained everything again, I knew he told everything. He was really trusting Jazzlin. If only he and Jazzlin could always be together. Fate was so cruel for separating their souls.
"I want to be honest. When I was at the hospital I overheard your conversation with Ronald. I know why your hand like that, but I was just kept my mouth shut." I was stunned waiting for his answer.
He looked at his hand which looked better than before, he was also able to drive anyway.
"Does it hurt?" I asked him when he still hadn't looked at me.
He ignored my question, "So you know about your videotape too?" He looked up. His eyes were interrogating me.
"I'm sorry, but yeah..."
I was ready to accept his anger or whatever from the start, but he didn't show it at all. Instead, he explained everything from the start. I liked his honesty.
"For your videotape problem, you don't need to do anything, I've arrested the culprit." He gritted between his teeth. His anger seemed to mount. His face turned red, perhaps imagining Zohran stabbing him in the back. But still, I couldn't conclude whether it was Zohran who drove us or not.
"Who's the culprit?" Slowly, I found myself asking.
"Zohran, the one and only one who was giving us a lift." His hand turned into a fist trying to hold back his emotions by inhaling and exhaling, "I've taught him the lesson he deserves."
"Then what was the meaning from the start he helped us?"
"From the start he had other plans, but saw another opportunity ... he took it."
The people around Jazzlin was really terrible. They were good at wearing masks but who knew behind it they had their own dark plans.
Now I understood very well why Barra decided not to have children. He didn't want them to get hurt, because that would kill him too.
Barra's phone rang through our silence, he hurriedly opened it, but a moment later his eyes bulged, "We have to go now."
"Why?" My breath quickened, looking at his hard expression.
"I'll explain later." He grabbed my hand as we headed outside.
I was sure something happened, but I was silent and just followed Barra out. We hurriedly got into the car, immediately he hit the gas at full speed.
"Ronald! Send all of my men to the hospital right now!" He ordered Ronald over the phone.
Jake!
"Is Jake in danger?" I held my breath for a second after seeing Barra nod.
I could imagine what had happened and it filled me with fear, "What happened to him?"
Barra emotionally honked the car in front of him even though it was a red light, "This is Haytham's doing!"
I closed my eyes as the car accelerated. Barra couldn't be held back anymore when he got angry. I could only pray that all these troubles would find an end soon.
Ronald and the others followed us. On the other hand I was getting more scared, thinking about an attack between Barra and Haytham. I couldn't see all of that happen.
Luckily the cafe was not too far from the hospital, so we arrived a few minutes later.
The hospital was already under siege with men wearing black masks and leather jackets. Barra stopped his car from getting into the parking lot.
"Jazzlin look at me." He cupped my face, "Promise me you will wait here."
My hands were shaking with my tears starting to drip, "No! Don't leave me ... don't go there please, they are dangerous." I cried holding his hands which still touched my cheeks.
"I'm gonna be back soon, I promise you." He forced a smile then kissed my forehead.
"No!" I held him again, but he quickly let go of me and opened the car door.
As Barra approached all of the men, he raised his hands as they immediately thrust their guns towards him.
I cried incessantly, "Ronald come here quickly." I tried calling him again but it always ended with a voicemail.
"Damn it!" I bit my nail.
They pulled Barra forcefully inside, making me bit my inner cheek. I decided to go inside carefully. No one would be able to find me, trust me.
I mustered all of my courage and strategy, then I got out of the car when I saw not a single man on guard.
How can this hospital be empty? I asked myself when I made it inside. A few hours ago I was here to see Jake, and there were still a lot of patients being treated.
No one was here. All the lights were turned off. Then, how do I know where Barra is? I grumbled to myself. It was like the same position I was getting put on when Niki's engagement party.
For a moment I heard footsteps, "Very good, I want you to torture him until he begs for my mercy."
I hid inside the reception table. That voice... I knew him very well. The man I praised, loved and cherished and the man who always protected me had now turned into a vicious monster.
I hated to admit it, but it was true that I was head over heels in love.
For now... I thought I had made a mistake by that.
My feet felt cramped squatting for so long but the sound of high heels walking closer made me sharpen my ears.
"I've finished my part."
I felt completely betrayed when I realized it was Moorah's voice.
"Have you earned her trust?" Haytham asked again.
"Yep, that woman is not as smart as I thought. She could easily believe what I told her."
He chuckled, "Are you that pathetic wanting to have that damn man?"
Does he mean Jake? My mind asked.
"Who's the woman who doesn't want Barra Ainsley?" She asked back, sounding annoyed.
She had been playing with me and Jake's feelings. I thought she had a second chance or maybe what she did in the past I could forgive. It felt like now it was no longer possible for me to forgive her.
"All right, according to my promise after this you can take him." Haytham spoke then Moorah's footsteps could be heard leaving this hall.
Do they think Barra is a doll they can just pass on? I was sure Barra had prepared a plan to solve the problem from this situation.
"You really like eavesdropping, huh."
Oh, my God! How many times have I been caught eavesdropping?
I looked up for a moment the shadow walked towards me, Haytham gave his smirk full of satisfaction as he managed to make me almost die of heart disease.
