Chapter 535: Chapter 535
After speaking up for Kong Shiyuan’s original wife, Wan Chu’er quickly got to the main topic.
"Is the letter you asked me to deliver to Old Man Kong very important to you? Kong Shiyuan even went through such trouble to get it from Old Man Kong. If I hadn’t given him the letter, he might have drugged me or knocked me out directly."
Old Sir Zhong disdainfully snorted, saying, "He must have the gall of a bear and the heart of a leopard to dare lay a hand on you."
Seeing her grandfather so imposing, Wan Chu’er giggled, "You’re a million times better than that Old Man Kong. How can you choose friends so carelessly and mingle with such people?" Ever since she knew the despicable things about Old Man Kong, Wan Chu’er had lost all respect for him and addressed him bluntly.
Old Sir Zhong’s eyes had a profound light, "Although Old Man Kong isn’t great in personal affairs, he is brave in battle and has a sense of loyalty."
Wan Chu’er disagreed, saying, "How can you sweep the world if you can’t sweep your own house? Anyway, I don’t like Old Man Kong." But she also didn’t interfere with her grandfather’s interactions with Old Man Kong, as they were both crafty old men and their interactions were definitely not that simple.
"Grandpa, don’t avoid the question. You still haven’t told me what exactly is written in that letter? Kong Shiyuan planned so much for it. Most importantly, will it affect you?" Wan Chu’er looked intently at Old Sir Zhong.
If the letter had a bad impact on her grandfather, she would have to find a way to get the letter back. Even if she couldn’t retrieve it, she would need to do something to eliminate the risk.
Old Sir Zhong said lightly, "I’m just an old bones, leading a secluded life, what impact could there be?"
Wan Chu’er didn’t believe it, "You tell me the truth. Don’t think about whether I can handle it or not. If you don’t tell me, I might take matters into my own hands, and that could ruin things. Tell me what’s in the letter. I wished I had opened it to read while I had the chance on the road."
Old Sir Zhong couldn’t help but smile bitterly, saying, "Let me think about it. You go get busy first. If you have the time, sort out your own matters and don’t dilly-dally."
Wan Chu’er said, "I haven’t decided how to deal with Jiang Kechu yet. Hearing about the Kong family’s issues, I’m really worried I might end up like Kong Zifeng’s mother." Yet, she lifted her head proudly, "I would never let myself be so suffocated."
"Alright, you think about it then, but you must tell me the truth quickly. Otherwise, if I lose my patience, I will go settle accounts with that Kong Shiyuan myself. He dared to deceive me, huh!"
Watching his granddaughter leave the study with high spirits, Old Sir Zhong chuckled to himself, yet hesitated uneasily.
In the afternoon, Jiang Kechu returned with Chuanqi and Hunter. The two little ones came back shouting to see their mother.
Wan Chu’er went out of her room to greet her children’s enthusiastic embrace. The three of them cooled down for a while, and Chuanqi bragged about how much their grandparents cared for them.
Jiang Kechu watched enviously, thinking to himself how wonderful it would be if he could also embrace them all.
"Chuchu, mom says thank you for the gift you bought her, and she’s asking when you’ll come over. She has something for you too," Jiang Kechu whispered to Wan Chu’er when he got the chance.
Just then, Chuanqi overheard and chirped in, "Grandma says she has a beautiful gift for mom."
Wan Chu’er smiled and caressed her daughter’s tender cheek, saying, "I’ll see when I have the time." But this was actually addressed to Jiang Kechu.
Getting such a calm response from Wan Chu’er satisfied Jiang Kechu quite a bit, a smile brimming in his eyes, "No rush, whenever you want to go is fine. If you don’t want to go, I’ll get the present from mom for you."
Wan Chu’er was touched by Jiang Kechu’s words and the pleading in them, setting off a bittersweet tumult inside her.
"No need." She squeezed out two words.
Jiang Kechu was thrilled and was about to entice a few words from her, but just then, Li Shan walked over and said bluntly, "The old man wants you in the study."
Wan Chu’er was startled, quickly realizing that the old man must have considered the earlier matter and had instructions for her; thus, she stood up and said, "Okay."
Jiang Kechu sighed in his heart, thinking Li Shan’s timing couldn’t be worse. He couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow and give Li Shan a look, trying to figure out if he did it on purpose.
But, to his surprise, Li Shan frowned and said, "The old man wants to see Jiang Kechu, not you."
Wan Chu’er paused and looked suspiciously at Li Shan, observing his serious demeanor, then turned to Jiang Kechu, who also looked puzzled.
Upon meeting Wan Chu’er’s gaze, Jiang Kechu immediately smiled and whispered in her ear, "I’ll go see Grandpa first and tell you later what he wanted."
After saying that, he quickly slipped away before Wan Chu’er could show her disgust, smiled again, and turned toward the study, while Li Shan lowered his head and took Hunter to the side to play, leaving Wan Chu’er standing alone, rooted to the spot.
Her ears burned, perhaps still feeling the breath of Jiang Kechu; it had been a long time since they were so close. Just now, when Jiang Kechu came so near, his lips almost touched her ear, sending a tingling sensation from her ear straight into her chest.
After a while, Wan Chu’er finally moved her feet, not bothering to ponder what matter the grandfather had to discuss with Jiang Kechu. She walked into Li Shan’s tech room, where he somehow had gathered all sorts of state-of-the-art equipment. She sat down at the computer and tried to focus on her work.
In the study, Old Sir Zhong and Jiang Kechu sat face to face. Jiang Kechu thought for a moment and hesitantly said,
"If Chuchu finds out, she probably won’t forgive me..."
Old Sir Zhong’s piercing eyes glanced at him, making Jiang Kechu feel instantly exposed, sensing all his schemes laid bare and a cold sweat broke out on his back.
Old Sir Zhong smirked, "Playing coy after getting a bargain, be careful or I’ll take back this great opportunity. With my backing, what are you afraid of?"
Hearing Old Sir Zhong support him, Jiang Kechu’s eyes lit up, and he gave a rare, abashed smile.
"Thank you, sir, for worrying about us." Content originally comes from n0velfire.net
"Hmph, go on. Tie up the loose ends with the Northwest. Your transfer order will come through in a couple of days," Old Sir Zhong nodded, signaling him to leave, "Call Chuchu here, that girl probably can’t sit still anymore."
Jiang Kechu practically flew out the door to find Wan Chu’er, but couldn’t find her in her room.
"Li Shan, have you seen Chuchu?"
Li Shan gave Jiang Kechu a slow look and said, "You look like the cat that got the cream, be careful Chuchu suspects you of cheating."
Jiang Kechu instantly scowled: "..." Dammit, felt like hitting someone.
Yet Li Shan just nodded, "That’s good, she’s in the tech room."
Jiang Kechu, rather speechlessly, turned to leave, thinking how those close to ink get stained; Li Shan had been corrupted by Xiao Bai, and he should keep Chuanqi and Hunter away from Xiao Bai. But as he reached the door of the tech room, he thought that maybe Chuanqi and Hunter should interact more with Xiao Bai after all.
