Chapter 385: Chapter 385
Jiang Kechu slightly furrowed his brows when Wan Chu’er shrank behind him. Why would Chuchu be afraid of the old master? This thought swiftly flashed through his mind.
He turned around intending to comfort Wan Chu’er with a few words, but then he saw Wan Chu’er’s eyes staring blankly, as if she had been electrocuted, her body twitching slightly. He was greatly alarmed and was about to ask her what was wrong when Wan Chu’er returned to normal.
Wan Chu’er looked down and saw the gown on her body, touching Jiang Kechu’s crisp military uniform, she took a deep breath in relief, finally returned to her own body after being in a dissociated state.
But what about the other soul inside her body?
Before she could ponder further, she saw a table of people and Jiang Kechu’s concerned gaze looking at her.
Now was not the time to think. Wan Chu’er smiled, walked out confidently, and approached Old Sir Zhong, intimately hooking her arm around the old man’s arm and coyly said:
"Grandpa, thank you. Don’t drink too much today, okay?"
She knew that the only reason she was able to return was because of the imposing pressure the old man had just released, which intimidated that spirit, giving her a chance to revert to normal.
Seeing his granddaughter’s demeanor, the odd feeling in Old Sir Zhong’s heart disappeared, and he smiled, "Alright, go with Xiao Jiang to the other tables; I’ve got this covered."
After leaving that table, Jiang Kechu wrapped one arm around Wan Chu’er’s slim waist, leaned down to her ear, and asked softly, "Did you feel uncomfortable just now?"
How dare you ask, hmph!
Wan Chu’er glared at him flirtatiously, and playfully said, "My soul left my body."
Hmm? Jiang Kechu frowned slightly, thinking Wan Chu’er was joking, then added, "Behave, don’t make trouble. If you’re tired, let Xiaoxiao accompany you to rest. I’ll handle the rest."
He was afraid, terrified that another mishap would prevent the marriage from happening.
Wan Chu’er saw the worry in Jiang Kechu’s eyes, and her heart softened immediately, she smiled and said, "I’m fine, don’t worry." She wasn’t ready to rest, not before encountering the persistent spirit, Zhuo Yao.
Soon they approached the next table, where both stopped to chat, lifting their heads and smiling at the guests, while attendants hurriedly helped with pouring wine and introductions...
Zhuo Yao watched from afar as Wan Chu’er was surrounded by people like stars crowning the moon, saw Wan Chu’er’s joyful smile, and saw the mature, handsome groom by Wan Chu’er’s side looking at her lovingly...
All this drove her mad with jealousy.
Once they were both little girls from the small town in Wutong County, both their fathers were soldiers, both their mothers were working, and even Wan Chu’er was inferior to her, completely under her control.
But now, Wan Chu’er had risen high above, admired and envied by all, while she could only sit in a corner full of jealousy.
Zhuo Yao scornfully glanced at Jiang Kefei next to her, stammering with agreement. Though both last named Jiang and cousins, Jiang Kefei couldn’t even compare to a fraction of Jiang Kechu.
Why wasn’t she the one standing next to Jiang Kechu? Why wasn’t Wan Chu’er looking up to her instead?
Zhuo Yao tilted her head back and drank all the wine in front of her.
Jiang Kefei expressed his concern, "Yaoyao, drinking too much is bad for your health, eat some food." While saying so, he considerately placed a bowl of soup in front of Zhuo Yao.
Zhuo Yao pouted, her eyes shifted and then noticed Jiang Kefei’s mother.
That’s right, his mother wasn’t sitting with them because when they first arrived, Zhuo Yao didn’t want to have too much interaction with Jiang Kefei’s family, so she requested to sit at another table.
"Come on, let’s go and propose a toast to Auntie," Zhuo Yao turned to Jiang Kefei.
"Ah?" Jiang Kefei was a bit slow to respond, puzzled, "No need, Yaoyao, my mom isn’t the picky type." He was afraid that Zhuo Yao would feel slighted.
Zhuo Yao choked, glared at him, and said, "I came here with you today, wouldn’t it be appropriate to at least greet your mom?" What a fool!
Finally, Jiang Kefei led Zhuo Yao to the table where his mother was.
Second Aunt Jiang and Third Aunt Jiang, along with Jiang Lirong, were seated at a table, looking enviously at Old Sir Zhong’s table, making snide remarks.
"The elder sister-in-law has changed, to think she didn’t sit with us and even placed us so far off to the side."
"That’s right! And you see our elder brother, with so many important guests today, he didn’t bother to introduce us, aren’t we also part of the Jiang Family?"
"Now that the elder brother and sister-in-law have their sons-in-law and grandchildren, where would they have time to remember us siblings?"
When Zhuo Yao walked over, she caught a phrase or two, snickered, and kept it in her mind.
"Mom, Third Aunt, Aunt, this is my friend, Zhuo Yao," Jiang Kefei happily introduced Zhuo Yao first, then introduced his elders to her.
Zhuo Yao smiled sweetly and politely said, "Auntie, sorry for the intrusion."
It isn’t every day that a son brings a lady over, so Second Aunt Jiang smiled and took Zhuo Yao’s hand, saying, "What a lovely girl, no need to be so formal."
Third Aunt Jiang and Jiang Lirong measured Zhuo Yao up.
Zhuo Yao, always adept at putting on airs and eloquent, quickly became familiar with Second Aunt Jiang, leaving Jiang Kefei aside and pulling up a chair next to Second Aunt Jiang.
As they chatted, the conversation somehow turned to the bride.
Zhuo Yao revealed a look of shared pride, smiling radiantly at Wan Chu’er in front, hesitating a bit before saying, "The bride is really nice, I’m genuinely happy for her today."
Jiang Lirong’s eyes darted about, she asked, "Miss Zhuo knows Xiao Chu?"
"Ah? Not very well." Zhuo Yao quickly shook her head, yet her eyes and expression seemed to say otherwise.
Third Aunt Jiang joined in as well, laughing, "That’s wonderful, now Xiao Chu will also have a friend to talk to. Aunt Jiang will be delighted to know you’re Xiao Chu’s friend; she treats her better than her own daughters."
Zhuo Yao shyly smiled and said, "I’d rather not show off in front of Aunt Jiang, Chu’er might not be too keen to see me."
Gossipy Jiang Lirong laughed, found a clean glass for Zhuo Yao, poured her a drink, and said,
"Speaking of which, we’re not very familiar with Xiao Chu. My nephew had a girlfriend before, but suddenly broke up one day, and not long after, he got together with Xiao Chu. After all, we’ll be relatives in the future, it’s inevitable we’ll interact, and we don’t know Xiao Chu’s preferences. Perhaps Miss Zhuo could fill us in."
Zhuo Yao smiled, took a sip from her drink, but remained silent.
Jiang Lirong glanced at Second Aunt Jiang, who gently asked, "Where are you from, Zhuo Yao?"
"I’m from Wutong County in Northern S Province, went to university in T City, and moved to Beijing to work after graduation, becoming colleagues with Ke Fei," Zhuo Yao candidly responded.
