Chapter 377: Chapter 377
After receiving Grandpa Jiang’s words, Jiang Kechu went to find Wan Chu’er.
The door of the study was open, and standing at the doorway one could see Wan Chu’er’s earnest and correct posture as she wielded her brush on the paper stroke by stroke. Jiang Kechu didn’t speak but quietly watched her straight back and her movements.
Wan Chu’er finally finished the last character, took a look, frowned, and felt it was still ugly.
Just as she was considering whether to rewrite it, she suddenly felt a gaze from the direction of the doorway. Turning her head, she saw Jiang Kechu standing tall and straight outside the door.
Wan Chu’er smiled, her radiant smile blooming, "Jiang Kechu, how long have you been watching me in secret?"
Jiang Kechu curved his lips and walked in: "For a while now, what have you written?"
Wan Chu’er immediately cocked her head, a face full of pride: "Not bad, right?" Although it was a question, the confidence within was so blunt.
Jiang Kechu reached out and tousled her hair, looking at the characters on the desk: Utterly commanding and cultured elegance.
It nicely included the names of the two children. The sentence was a good one, but the characters seemed a bit youthful and elegant, with brushstrokes that subtly revealed a hint of sharpness, very much like the person who wrote them.
"Hmm, it looks pretty good. Once the ink is dry, I’ll take it back home and stick it on the wall."
Wan Chu’er immediately nodded in agreement, completely forgetting that she had just been dissatisfied.
"What did you just talk to Grandpa about?" Wan Chu’er turned the conversation, her eyes fixed on him.
Jiang Kechu sat down on a nearby chair, took one of her hands, and slowly caressed, feeling the calluses between her fingers, and he said with a smile:
"I was discussing our marriage with Grandpa."
"And how did the discussion go?"
"Hmm," Jiang Kechu responded softly, but then said, "Maybe in three months or even sooner, I will be transferred to serve in the Northwest Military Region."
Wan Chu’er unconsciously exclaimed "Ah" and blurted out, "What will happen to us and the kids if you leave?" Then she realized that since she had already agreed with Grandpa, from what she knew of him, he must have intended for her to follow Jiang Kechu with the children to the military base.
Without thinking, Wan Chu’er said, "I’m not going."
She had already made up her mind to spend more time with Grandpa. If she went to the Northwest, it wouldn’t be easy to come back, and she wouldn’t feel at ease not being by his side.
As if he had expected Wan Chu’er to respond this way, Jiang Kechu wasn’t surprised but indulgently said:
"Okay, then you and the children stay here with Grandpa. If you feel like going out, come visit me, stay for a month or two, then come back."
For a moment, Wan Chu’er didn’t know what to say. This put her in a difficult position - she wanted her children to have their father’s company as they grew up, but she couldn’t be at ease leaving Beijing and Grandpa.
Seeing her dilemma, Jiang Kechu smiled and said, "Don’t think too much about it. Let things take their course. If you want to stay in Beijing, stay here. If you miss me, head to the Northwest.
"Think about our wedding," he seemed to remember the previous twists and turns, Jiang Kechu smiled, "This time, no matter what, I have to marry you."
Wan Chu’er blinked and pouted, "The children are already born."
Jiang Kechu immediately burst into hearty laughter.
When Mrs. Jiang heard from her husband and son about having the wedding in a month, she was so surprised that her eyes widened. She repeatedly confirmed that it was indeed happening, her hands joined in joy: "This time there better not be any hiccups."
The invitations had been sent out twice already, and as the saying goes, "Three times is the charm," they better not have to send them a fourth time.
Father Jiang said, "Don’t jinx it."
"Exactly, look at me being a pessimist," Mrs. Jiang happily slapped her own mouth.
Father Jiang added, "These next few days, tidy up the house, prepare another room. After some time, we’ll bring Grandpa back to live here."
Mrs. Jiang thought for a moment, nodded, and planned to hire an additional nanny to take special care of Grandpa.
A week later, the entire Jiang family went to pick up Grandpa from the hospital. Everyone knew that Grandpa couldn’t return to his Siheyuan to live by himself anymore, but they hadn’t seriously discussed who he would live with yet. However, Second Aunt Jiang and Third Aunt Jiang had already worked on their husbands behind the scenes, resolutely refusing to take Grandpa into their own homes.
Second Uncle Jiang and Third Uncle Jiang were both selfish people, and half-heartedly they all pretended to be confused.
Father Jiang said indifferently, "Let’s first return to the big courtyard, everyone goes, we need to discuss Grandpa and Grandma’s future."
So families of Second and Third understood that this was to discuss who would support them. Since it involved support, Grandpa’s wealth would also need to be discussed. Second Uncle Jiang, who held a government position, had previously benefited from some perks, and the household was getting by. However, due to the incident with Wan Chu’er, Jiang Kechu had intervened, and Second Uncle Jiang had been transferred to a less lucrative position, losing the extra income he once enjoyed. With Second Aunt Jiang nagging constantly, they couldn’t remain indifferent to Grandpa’s Siheyuan and savings.
Third Uncle Jiang was a businessman who firmly believed in the maxim "one should never refuse wealth," and Grandpa’s Siheyuan had a good location and layout. These days, using Siheyuans as boutique hotels was trendy. If he could use it for business, that would be great.
Moreover, Third Aunt Jiang was someone who loved to take advantage of small gains and nitpicked about everything - how could she be indifferent to Grandpa’s belongings? Even if she couldn’t get the lion’s share, she had to bite off a piece for herself.
Jiang Lingling watched the crowds bustling toward the big courtyard, her eyes darting around, then she made a phone call to her cousin Lin Jiayi. Soon enough, Jiang Lirong was informed.
Upon hearing the news, Jiang Lirong barely needed a moment to understand the purpose of the family gathering, and she ground her teeth in anger. She was the daughter of Grandpa and Grandma, yet no one informed her at this critical time, intending to secretly split Grandpa’s estate behind her back—such a cunning plan!
Angry as she was, she immediately saw this as the opportunity she had been waiting for. With everyone rarely gathered so completely, and with the discussion set to revolve around Grandpa, the passbook and property deeds were bound to come up. She wanted to see how Huang Meiying would explain the situation with the passbook.
If everyone found out that Grandpa’s assets and property deeds had long been transferred into Boss Jiang’s hands, who knew what their reactions would be, particularly the families of Second and Third. Just thinking about that scenario made Jiang Lirong feel exhilarated.
This time, not only did she want to unmask Boss Jiang’s facade, but she also wanted to secure a decent share for herself. She was Grandpa’s daughter, a member of the Jiang family—why should she be left out when it came to dividing the inheritance?
After some thought, Jiang Lirong decided to stir the pot further and made a phone call to her daughter, instructing her to find a way to trick Wan Chu’er into coming as well.
Why didn’t she call Wan Chu’er herself? Firstly, she didn’t have Wan Chu’er’s number, and secondly, she wasn’t sure if Wan Chu’er would be amenable to her, so she wasn’t confident she could lure Wan Chu’er.
And so, everyone gathered at Boss Jiang’s house, each with their own intentions.
