Chapter 77: Chapter 77

After I eat, I head to Jade's room. I sketch the last guy and place him on the wall with the rest of suspects. I write down everything that I remembered and place it in the center. I know remember everything that happened. I know why I was raped and strangled. I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I saw something I wasn't supposed to see. It was accidental. I was never supposed to be raped or killed. I now knew what happened, but I still didn't know why. Why did they want Jade dead?

The room door opens and my heart skips a beat. Connor walks through the door. I let out a sigh of relief.

"The cop let me in, " he says as he sits down beside me on the floor.

"Why do you have a huge duffel bag?" I ask him.

"Because I'm sleeping over," he says with a smile. Connor made be a nerd, but he is not ugly. He is the opposite of that actually. Once, when he took off his glasses and wore contacts for prom, all of the girls were after him. Little did they know, it was the same guy they ignored throughout the year. It was also probably because he was very nice. At my high school, girls loved the bad boys. Boys on the sports teams and guys who worked out and treated them like shit. Even at one point, I had a crush on one of the guys on the soccer team. But, I was too busy with school to date, too busy to acknowledge the guys who found interest in me. Apparently, there were a few. Jade was the one who pointed them out to me. If it wasn't for her, I would've gone my whole high school years thinking no one ever liked me. She threw me off when she said Connor liked me, though. I didn't see it. He was always like my older brother. Anyways, the point is, girls didn't flock to Connor and he was happy when he left high school.

"Hand me your phone," Connor says to me. I don't question why. I hand it to him. He does some reprogramming, connecting it to his laptop and I just sit there and watch him, amazed.

I am a smart girl. I aced English, social sciences and math classes, but when it came to computer programming and hacking, it just wasn't for me. I found interest in watching Connor do it.

"There!" He says, handing my phone back to me. "Now if that person calls you back, I'll be able to track where it's coming from. The coordinates will go straight to my computer. All you have to do is keep him or her on the line for 30 seconds." Sounds like a good plan to me. During the time we wait for the call, we think of what we're going to do next. School starts tomorrow and the Dean will be there. Should we confront him? Should we spy on him? Should we bug him to gain evidence? And what about his wife? If she really is covering for him, how will we be able to give the evidence to the police if she's the head?

We didn't know where to start are what to do.

The sound of my phone ringing breaks me out of my thought. First ring. Connor quickly opens up his laptop. Second ring. When he's ready, he gives me a thumbs up. Third ring. I nod and take a deep breath. "Hello.."

Ten seconds pass, no answer. "Hello." Fifteen minutes pass. "I know you're there, I can hear you breathe." Nineteen minutes pass. Connor looks at me doing a circle motion with his index finger, indicating I should keep talking. "Why do you keep calling me?" I ask. Twenty-four minutes pass. All I'm thinking in my head is 'please don't hang up!' Twenty-eight minutes pass. Two more seconds to go.

"Got it!" Connor yells out. The phone hangs up.

"It will only take a few seconds...and...here it is. On his computer screen, it looks like the map is zooming in. It zooms into a house in Toronto.

"54 Altona Avenue," he says "wanna go?"

"Right now?" I look at the time. " It's almost ten"

"Yeah, that's why we need to go now. If we wait till tomorrow, Greg will follow us. You said you don't trust him right? So, we need to sneak out."

"Okay, but one problem"

"What is it?"

"When Greg sleeps, he doesn't sleep. He hears everything. He'll wake up before we even make it out the door."

"Who says we're going out the door?" He says with a grin on his face. He looks very sexy when he does that.

I look at him in awe as he wires some connections around my room.

"What is this?" I ask him.

"If Greg opens the door, the sound of you snoring will start. With the pillows under the covers, it will look like you're sleeping."

"What about you?"

He starts thinking for a second.

"I guess I will be using the front door after all. I'll just say I'm leaving and that you fell asleep. I'll catch you from your bedroom window. Got it?"

I nod. " Just one more thing, I don't snore". Connor bursts out laughing.

"Mia, yes you do. And loud too. Where do you think I got the recording from? Remember that sleepover we had in grade eight? I think everyone at that party has a recording of you snoring."

I feel embarrassed. "Well, that was in grade eight. How do you know I still snore?" I say, confident that he won't have an answer.

"Jade used to sleep over all the time. We'd always talk about it," he says laughing.

I can't help but laugh too. "You guys are horrible," I say, hitting his shoulder.

"Alright, get ready," he says looking up and down at me."And wear black"

Ten minutes later, Connor and I are dressed in black from head to toe. He traded his glasses for contacts. Look at those sexy eyes. It's a mix of blue and green.

"Ready?"

"Ready!"

He picks up his duffle bag and heads out my room. "See you outside."

"Bye Greg. Mia's in the room sleeping" I hear him say before he walks out the front door.

I sit on my bed and wait until I get the signal that he's below the window. After two minutes of waiting, a text comes to my phone. I open up my window and climb down the rail of stairs at the side of my building. I climb down another set of stairs and now it's time to jump. I look down and Connor is standing with his hands wide open, waiting to catch me. I close my eyes and jump and I'm surprised when Connor catches me.

"Surprised?" He asks me.

"Yes!" I admit. He puts me down. We get into his car and drive off.

"Do you know how to get there?" I ask him.

"Uh, yeah I've been around that area before."

We drive in silence the rest of the way.

"Alright, we're here."

We get out the car.

"So what's the plan?" I ask.

"Um, I was just going to ring the doorbell."

"That's it?" The way he planned this night, I thought he would have a super cool plan.

"So why the all black?" I ask him

"Cause it's badass," he says. I can't help but laugh. He looks at me and laughs too. They are those eyes again.

We walk up to the front porch and I ring the doorbell.

"Hear it goes"

A woman answers the door.

"Can I help you?" She asks

"We'll, I've been getting prank phone calls from your number and I want it to stop."

"I'm sorry, what's your name?"

"Mia"

"Hold on one second." She turns around and heads back into her house. Connor and I just stare at each other in confusion. After three minutes, a man appears at the door. I drop my jaw, surprised by who I'm looking at.

It's detective Chandler.
