Chapter 75: Chapter 75
I lay in my bed, unable to sleep. Since my mom stays at the hospital with my dad 24 hours, I allow Greg to take her place on the couch. I feel much safer when he's in the apartment, plus it allows him to get some sleep.
I look at my calendar. I start school in 2 days. With everything that's been going on, I completely forgot. To be honest, I don't think I even want to go. I used to love school. I used to dominate school. But school for me won't be the same anymore, not without Jade. I know we didn't have many courses together because of our different majors, but this semester I did have two courses with her.
I text Sharon till about 2 am, then I fall asleep.
I'm sitting on the couch with a drink in my hand. I'm tired and I want to go home but I don't see Jade. I look around the house for Jade. She's not in the kitchen or the living room. After searching for 7 minutes, I come to the conclusion that she's not downstairs. At this point, I'm annoyed and exhausted. I head towards the staircase passing drunk guys and topless girls. This party is too wild for me I think to myself. Finally, I head upstairs...
I wake up to the sound of my cellphone ringing.
"hello?" I answer in my morning voice. No one answers. I look at my phone, unknown number. After three more seconds I repeat:" hello!" Still no answer. After waiting another 4 seconds, I hang up the phone. That was weird.
I wake up, not excited that I have to go back to therapy. The last couple of weeks, she hasn't been helping me remember anything important. The memories are either very short and incomplete or just plain useless. The last memory I remembered from therapy was a guy doing a keg stand. Nothing that helps Jade's case.
I take a shower and get ready. I slick my hair back into a low side bun and quickly put on mascara. When I'm done I head to the kitchen. Greg is already up and eating cereal. I wonder if he misses being at his own house. He's literally with me all the time. We do morning greetings and I make a bagel with cream cheese.
"How was your sleep?" He asks me.
I shrug my shoulder " It was alright, how about yours?"
He tells me how he kept falling in and out of sleep because the people next door were arguing and it was loud. I must sleep like the dead because I didn't hear them. 15 minutes later were in the car and headed to my therapy session. When we get there, Greg parks the car.
"Mia, I got a call from Marissa yesterday. She said that it's been three weeks and nobody has tried to hurt you so you no longer need me for protection. She told me this yesterday, but I decided to stick around to take you to your last therapy session before school starts. "
I don't know how to respond to that. I'm actually kind of going to miss him. I've gotten so used to him being around. The fear of being alone sweeps over me. Maybe I'll stay with my mom at the hotel. My dad is being released tomorrow. Maybe I should help her take care of him.
I don't know what to say so I nod and hug him.
"I'll bring you home if you want," he says. I agree and head into the building. I head up to the second floor and my session begins.
* *
"So Mia, how do you feel about going back to school?" I answer her questions in no more than 4 word answers. I don't feel like participating today. Not only because I'm sad that Greg's leaving me but I don't know if I could trust her.
"Is everything okay?" She asks me.
I tell her I'm fine. She doesn't try to pressure me and I appreciate that.
After her fail attempt to get me to open up, we go straight to the memory activities. I go into my position, laying on the couch and closing my eyes.
"So a few weeks ago, detective Chandler gave my pictures of the house you and Jade partied at. I'm not going to show you the pictures because I was asked not to, but I will describe a couple of rooms to you. Let's see if that jogs your memories."
She describes the living room and kitchen. Nothing. She then starts to describe the bathrooms. Still nothing. She finally gets upstairs.
"The stairs that connect from the living room to the upper floor is wood with a brown handle. On the right when you get upstairs, there's a door that leads to a bedroom." She waits. After a minute, she continues. "In this bedroom, the bed is against a wall in the middle of the room with a black carpet in front of the bed. The desk is pushed to a corner where it contains books and a laptop. Above the desks is pictures of half naked girls and the Omega sign representing the frat house..."
I know this room oh too well...
I head upstairs looking for Jade to leave the party. I see something. The memory gets blurry. I see three guys at the room door. The memory gets blurry. I'm running away from the room to the stairs.
My eyes snap open. I'm unsatisfied with this incomplete memory. I decide what I'm going to do to restore the rest.
I quickly get up. She's still speaking, describing other parts of the room. She stops when I sit up.
"Did you remember anything?" She asks me.
"I got to go," I tell her.
"But we still have 12 minutes.."
I don't wait for her to finish. I head straight for the door and run downstairs. I need to remember what happened. There's something about this memory that I feel is very important.
I open the doors of the building and I walk outside. I'm looking around for Greg's car, just when I hear something behind me. Before I can turn around to look, somebody grabs me. I struggle to break free of his grasp, but he's too strong. A van pulls up near the street corner and I realize that the van is here for me. They're going to take me.
At the thought of this, I try to escape even more. He's inching me toward the van. I'm about to yell for help when he puts his hand over my mouth. I bite his hand and he yells in pain, never breaking his grip.
"Bitch!" He cries out. He holds on even tighter. Finally, I hear a blow to the guy's head and he drops to the floor. I look down, he's unconscious. Greg hit him with his gun. I look over at the van and it has already pulled off.
Greg handcuffs the guy. He then kicks him over and starts digging through his pants. There's no ID on him. Greg looks anything but nerdy now. In this moment, he looks strong, brave and heroic. It's a bit attractive actually.
Greg turns the guy around one last time and immediately I recognize him. It's the tanned guy who I saw when I went to put flowers at Jade's memorial dumpster place.
Finally, someone caught him. I would have never guessed it'd be Greg. He uses his radio to call for backup and an ambulance. We wait in the car until the ambulance comes. The blond guy is still laying unconscious on the floor. People around us are staring and taking videos and pictures. One guy even attempts to call 911 until Greg shows him his badge.
The ambulance finally arrives and the feeling of Deja Vu comes over me. Just two weeks ago I was waiting for the ambulance to take my dad to the hospital.
Two minutes after the ambulance, a police car shows up. Both Greg and I give statements. They then take a few statements from other witnesses. When that's done, one of the policemen goes into the ambulance with the tanned guy and the other trails behind in the police car. They head to the ambulance.
I'm still shocked by this whole scenario.
Greg and I head to the police station to give an official report. I really don't understand why so many reports are necessary.
