Chapter 67: Chapter 67
Detective Chandler walks in with the woman officer. He introduces himself to my parents and introduces the female cop as officer Rinson. They extend firm handshakes to my parents.
"Mr. and Misses Wilson, I'm very sorry that we had to meet under these circumstances." The detective says. "Mia, I know you're not able to remember what happened to you last night, but do you know anyone who would try to hurt you or Jade? Did she have any enemies, any people she didn't get along with?"
Jade was a very out-going girl. She had so many friends, so many people liked her. She was very popular. Maybe people were jealous of her. Jealous of her beauty and popularity. But jealous enough to kill her?
"Not anyone I can think of," I respond.
"Okay," he says. " since we don't know who hurt you and if that person
was actually trying to kill you, there's a chance that if he finds out you're still alive, he'll come after you. It's not safe for you to be alone right now."
"Mia, you're coming home" my mother interrupts.
"I don't want to go back to Alberta, I still have one more semester left," I say.
"Mia, you can take a semester off. You've been hurt honey."
"But..."
"Actually..." Officer Rinson says " since you are a part of an ongoing investigation, it's better that you stay in town where we can reach you if need be."
"But why? She doesn't even remember anything," my mom says
"Well, that's why she will be in therapy. We're hoping that she'll regain her memories which, can help this case," the officer says.
"But you just said she might be in danger." My dad finally breaks his silence. He's speaking but still avoiding my eyes.
"Yes, we will assign an officer to watch your home 24 hours. You will be safe." The detective pulls at his card and hands it to me. "As soon as you leave the hospital tomorrow morning, a cop will escort you home. Well, that's it for now. Contact me if you remember anything. Have a goodnight folks."
Both the detective and the officer walks out the room.
"Mia, sleep. Your father and I are going to the hotel tonight. We'll come early tomorrow morning to take you home. I'll bring you some clothes."
She kisses me on the forehead and my dad looks at me for the first time and just nods. They leave the room. Even with all the sleep I got, I still feel exhausted. I close my eyes and let sleep take over me.
When I wake up, it's bright outside. The sunlight is forcing itself through the blinds, illuminating the room. I hear birds chirping outside my window. I wish I could appreciate the beauty of this day. Instead, I'm forced to relive what I learned yesterday. The pain on my neck has subsided, but the headache still remains. This time, dizziness accompanies it.
"Good morning, Mia." The nurse walks in holding a tray of food. On it is an apple, something in a bowl which I assume is oatmeal, a water bottle and some crackers. The only thing I'm eyeing is that water bottle. I feel dehydrated.
She sets the tray down on the table next to my bed and puts down two Tylenol tablets. "Take the Tylenol after you've finished eating," she says, " you will be discharged when your parents return." With a smile, she exits the room.
I drink half the bottle of water and nibble on some crackers. That oatmeal does not look good. The sight of it makes me want to throw up. I slush it around so it can look like I ate some and then I take a bite of the apple. Now it appears that I've attempted to eat everything. I then take the Tylenol and wash it down with the rest of the water.
Minutes go by. I don't know what to do. I'm so bored! I look around the room and I find nothing. No magazines, no books, no remote for the TV. I sigh. They probably thought I'd just sleep all day. I can't believe I'm about to say this but I can't wait for my parents to come.
After an hour of doing absolutely nothing, my mother walks through the door. I'm not surprised my father is isn't here.
"Hi, how are you feeling?" she asks.
"I've had better days," I confess.
She smiles at me. Her smile shows no sign of pity, it's something else. Regret.
I know she thinks this is her fault. It was my choice to leave home, to move to Toronto with Jade. She was reluctant at first, after all, I am her only child, but decided that maybe a little independence would be good for me. I had good grades and worked hard all my life, I needed time to venture out.
My mother helps me off the bed and I go to the bathroom. After I'm done, I walk out the bathroom to find the detective with a male cop, my nurse and my mom in a conversation. When they see me, my mom turns and says, "Mia, we were just talking about you."
Of course, they were.
"Mia, this is officer Wesley, he will be escorting you home and will be conducting 24 hours surveillance at your home" detective Chandler says.
In front of me is a red headed, green eyed skinny cop. He looks about 5'9 and he might weigh about 130 pounds, if not less. No offense, but when I was told I was getting a body guard, I expected someone bigger and stronger. This guy looks like he can be knocked down by wind.
Instead of complaining, I smile at him. He smiles back. Oh god! Are those braces?
"Mia, one last thing before you leave," the nurse starts. "Your first session with Doctor Benson will be tomorrow at 12:00 pm. Usually, we wait a bit before you see a therapist, but since your memories are vital for an ongoing investigation, we must start the process as soon as possible. The address is on the card that was given to you yesterday" she wheels in a wheelchair and says one last goodbye. The detective informs me that I will be meeting with them in a week for some follow-up questions.
After all the talking and instructions, I finally get ready to leave the hospital. I really don't need the wheelchair but my mom insists. My mother wheels me out the hospital and into the parking lot. We get into the car and we start off. The police car follows us, always staying two cars behind us.
"Where's dad?" I ask
My mother glances at me from the car mirror. "He had to call his work to let them know he wouldn't be in for a while. He's just finishing up some conference calls and last minutes work so he can take a few days off. He'll stop by your apartment later."
He's still avoiding me. I understand that it's hard, but how can he not be here for me? I almost died.
After 25 minutes of driving in silence, we finally arrive at my house.
We unload the car and enter in my building. After a quick ride in the elevator, we're on my floor. My mom sets down all the bags and announces that she's going to cook. The first thing I do is go straight to the bathroom. I smell like a hospital. I fill the bath with water and throw a bath bomb inside. It explodes and purple colors fill the tub allowing a lavender scent to fill the air. I strip out of my clothes and take the bandage off my head and let my brown curls fly loose. I step in the bath, lay down and allow the purple water to surround me.
I take a sponge and wash it all off; the hospital, the rape, the dried up tears, everything. I take a deep breath and plunge my head into the water. I'm under for about 3 seconds before...
Jade and I are in a car. We called an uber to take us to the party. "I'm going to find a good guy for you to take home," she teases. "Girl, you're almost 21 and you're still a virgin."
"Well you're 22 and you've slept with twice as many guys as your age."
We start to laugh and Jade gets a text. She reads it and rolls her eyes. Something is upsetting her."Whatever, this is gonna be a hell of a night". The uber car pulls up to a house.
