Chapter 83: Chapter 83
Nancy stayed home to rest. But before going in, as soon as Felix stopped the car in front of the house, she went to speak to Mrs. Potts.
She told her everything and she sympathized with her.
'Sorry dearie, I caused this. I asked you to go hunting for evidence against Phoebe when you should have been resting at home. Please forgive me'.
'There is nothing to forgive but I have decided that I won't give up until I find something incriminating against her because I feel in my guts that there really is such a thing'.
'Of course, she can not come and reap where she has not shown. It is not her right. So if there is any evidence against her, then we have to get it', Mrs Potts said.
'What evidence?' asked a voice from the door way. They looked up to see Phoebe standing there.
They were shocked. They had not expected to see her at that time. What was she doing here?
'Eh, it's nothing you should concern yourself about', Nancy quickly said.
'Of course, I couldn't care less what the servants are gossiping about and oh, you must be wondering what I am doing here but I must tell you that I have the right to come in here anytime I so deem fit. I shall soon Bethe lady of this house afterall', she said arrogantly and walked haughtily into the house and up the stairs.
'And by the way, Nancy, how did you manage to get yourself pregnant? I hope you are not planning on foisting it on my fiance because if you are, you are months too late. He wouldn't even look at the likes of you. You are too low class - far below his standard. Like I told you the other day, you have to stay within your limit and I am sure it is someone of your class that got you pregnant. Woman of little virtue and control but you were posing as an innocent when you came here. Who would have believed that you would get pregnant out of wedlock? And what did you say, that I should learn to have a hold on my man? Well now, I do not just have a hold over him, I have him on a tight leash. Well, congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope you find a father for your baby because I won't be surprise if the person who got you pregnant denies it. Everyone wants to be elevated not demoted and that is what being married to you would do to any man'. She said and went into Jason's room.
Nancy felt belittled and angry.Phoebe had just antagonized her. She had made Nancy even more determined to expose her because she now felt sure Phoebe was hiding something.
Mrs Potts looked at Nancy sympathetically, 'Pay her no mind. It was good that you did not say anything to her. Silence is the best answer for a fool and a fool is what Phoebe is whether she knows it or not. Now more than ever, we need to out her in her place She thinks she has put you down but she had just sold her dignity to you'.
Nancy smiled and shook her head.
Mrs Potts was glad to see the determination in her eyes.
'She spoke as though we were enemies or something. I never knew she haboured such animosity towards me' Nancy said.
She hadn't even asked her what she was doing at home instead if at work.
'Is this the way she comes to the house when Jason isn't home?' Nancy asked.
'No. But I guess we shall have to start getting use to it if she is going to be the lady of the manor. I am even surprised that she has not packed into the house yet given what you have told me. I wonder why Mr. Campbell has not told me about his forth coming wedding yet. It must be because he is not happy about it. If he were, preparations would have been in full swing', Mrs Potts said reflectively.
'Well whether he likes the idea or not, he will have to get married to her except if course we get any evidence that shows that Jason doesn't have to marry her'. Nancy said thoughtfully.
As she was about to go to her quarters to get the needed rest,
'Potts! Potts!' Came a call from up the stairs.
'What does she want this time? I shall just pretend I didn't hear her. Even my boss does not take my name like that. He calls respectfully and he is the one who pays and accommodates me!'
Nancy decided to wait to know what Phoebe wanted or what she would do.
'Potts! Did you not hear me calling for you?' The voice was closer. It meant that she had either come out of the room or come down the stairs.
'Miss Walkman, I did not hear your call. What may I do for you?'
'Prepare some steak, scrambled eggs and bring it up for me with a cup of orange juice'.
'Alright!' Mrs Potts said grudgingly.
As she saw Nancy going out to her quarters, she spoke to her.
'And you, madam secretary, what are you doing at home at this time? Aren't you supposed to be at the office doing what you are paid to do?'
Nancy who had stopped to hear what she wanted to say felt that she had no response for her and would have continued her trip back to her quarters but Phoebe's voice stopped her again.
'Did I not just ask you a question? I need an answer!'
'I am not feeling too strong and have just come back from the hospital. I am supposed to be on bed rest'.
'Really? And here where you are ibusy gossiping is where you are having the bed rest?'
'I will just go into my quarters for the rest, if you will excuse me'.
Nancy started walking away as Potts we t into the kitchen to get Phoebe what she had asked. She wondered at such a combination of meal and decided it was greed and nothing else. Or wickedness, to just keep her busy because she could not tolerate her relaxing while she was supposed to be working.
That must be it.
She was not married to the boss yet and she had started bossing them around. Mrs. Potts shuddered to think what would happen when she eventually became Mrs. Campbell.
'Ni, you don't. Since you did not go in for the rest for which you are supposed to have been given the day off work, you will have to bring me the meal as soon as Potts finishes with it's preparation'.
Nancy looked at her but did not say anything but continued to walk away.
Phoebe was really angry.
She did not know why Nancy did not show her any reverence at all. She would have to speak to Jason to talk some sense into her. If she was going to be his wife, then all the servants had to respect her.
