Chapter 105: Chapter 105

At breakfast, Phoebe was exceptionally sweet. Jason found her sweetness cloying and it irritated him but he had to suffer her in silence because of his sister.

Sally was not helping matters at all. She was supporting Phoebe blindly and he loved his sister so much that he did not want to hurt her feelings. She was the only family he had.

'I know you had a visitor last night. Has she left already?' Phoebe asked.

'What visitor? If you were referring to Nancy, did you not see when she left?'

'I am not referring to that lying bitch!' Phoebe said with a lot of Venom. 'I am talking about the sweet thing that came for you last night', she concluded with feigned sweetness.

'Mind your tongue. Nancy is not a bitch and as for the lying part, we shall see about that and are you spying on me now?' Jason asked angry with Phoebe.

'And what would you mean by that? I mean about seeing if Nancy is lying or not. Of course, she is lying and like I said Phoebe will not undergo any other test to prove her sincerity to you. It is degrading and I am shocked that you want to do that because your employee said so?'

'I have had my doubts before now but I just could not understand why I was restless and could not seem to accept the child as mine but what harm could it possibly cause if Phoebe were to undergo the test? This is my life and I have a say in it and I have decided that before I take a further decision, another test will be conducted in a hospital even I do not know of yet.

And Yes, Nancy is not merely an employee, she is the woman I love!' Phoebe nearly choked on her milk at the announcement.

She was sure her secret would be out and she was scared. What explanation could she possibly give if the results stated that Jason was infact not the father of her baby?

She put on a bold front to convince everybody or sway their opinion so that she wouldn't need to go through that test anymore.

'Since the lady of the manor has asked her lord that this poor maid should have the test done again, who am I to refuse? If submitting myself to that test again will clear any misconceptions, then I am ready to do it. Afterall like Jason said, what harm could it possibly cause?' she asked.

Sally was not really happy about it but seeing the seriousness on her brother's face, she consented.

'If you really feel that way. But it has to be done after Christmas which is just two days away'.

Phoebe became scared now that Sally had consented to her having the test. She had been too overconfident that Sally would not stand for it, now she had to start devising another plan to beat the test result and more importantly turn the tables on Nancy.

The foolish girl thought that she was wise. She was going to teach her a grave lesson.

'Lady of the manor in deed and she did not come to have breakfast with the family and neither did anyone ask of her'., Phoebe thought to herself a bit pacified at the thought.

'Uncle, where is aunt Nancy?' Vera asked.

'Yes where is she? She needs to come play with us today'. Vaughn supported.

'Well, she is...'

'Vera, Vaughn, I could play with you if you want'.Phoebe offered.

'No, we do not want to play with you. You do not like us but aunt Nancy does'. Vera said pouting.

'Whoever gave you that impression?' Phoebe asked surprised at the children's accurate perception.

'Now, Vera and Vaughn, you better stop speaking nonsense. Because someone does not play with you often does not mean they dislike you'. Their mother scolded them.

'Uncle you were going to tell us where to see aunt Nancy'. Vaughn asked not acting as though he heard his mother.

'Yes, she is in her quarters I presume. She must be tired though, else she would have come here to eat with us', Jason said and Phoebe felt ill.

'We shall go to her then but uncle, tell us, why does she have to live outside the mansion? She is going to be your wife isn't she?'

All three adults looked at Vera open mouthed.

'Who told you that?' Jason whispered.

'Nobody but I see the way you look at her. It is the same way my daddy looks at my mother and they are married, so why can't you? Aunt Nancy also likes you alot because she looks at you the same way, you know.

You are an adult, shouldn't you know this?'

'Off you go. Don't get yourselves injured and don't disturb her too much okay?'

'Okay, uncle', they both chorused and ran off.

The shock was still evident in the eyes of the women.Even little children could see this, then it was more serious than they were envisaging.

Phoebe was seething. She hated the children. First they idolized Nancy as the better playmate and then they reminded Jason of his love for Nancy. She felt like wringing their necks.

Jason started laughing.

The two women looked at him as though he had suddenly developed horns.

It made him laugh all the more harder. He was happy at what he had heard. If Vera could see his love for Nancy and claims that she saw the same in Nancy's eyes, then it must be true.

Like Vera, his late night visitor had said, he needed to find out what Nancy felt for him. And what actually happened last night with Alfred.

It seemed that the two Vera(s) in his life were trying to say something to him.

'Could you explain what was so funny?' Sally asked.

'Children. Such innocence. They just say what they think without caring about the atmosphere in the house. Everybody had been avoiding any talk about Nancy but they came and hit the nail right on the head. They said what they felt and did not bother to coat it with honey to please anyone. They were just being sincere which cannot be said of us, adults'.

'They are children and cannot differentiate right from wrong. One looking at you lustfully does not imply that they love you and likewise, if I look at you with anger does not automatically make me your enemy, lovers most times fight alot if they are sincere with each other, it just brings them closer and make them understand each other better!' Phoebe said.

'Exactly. Quarrels do not mean that the love is absent but that there has been some misunderstanding. Thanks alot Phoebe. And now, I have some business to attend to, if you will excuse me'.

Jason went out with his shorts and singlet, looking so cute and handsome.

Phoebe could not understand why she was feeling this way. Could it be that she was falling in love with Jason? Her obsession to get married to him and his indifference towards her had all cumulated to making her fall for Jason and she had not even realised it.

She had to do something to secure him now more than ever.

She knew that Jason had gone to play with the kids in Nancy's quarters and that will serve to bring them closer as they resolve their differences and she was not going to allow that but as she stood up to go after Jason, Sally held her back. Don't! Let it rest for now so that you don't look or sound like a nag Men hate that in a woman. You will lose him faster that way. Keep your calm. There is nothing to be afraid of, afterall, you are the one who is going to bear the heir of the Campbells' family'.

Phoebe nodded and smiled as she sat down again. She wished it was as easy as that but only her knew how complicated the whole thing had become.
