Chapter 44: Chapter 44
That night, the distance back home was accompanied by silence as both Omar and Lisa did not know what to talk about. Even though he had eaten, everything felt twisted in his stomach as though he had eaten sand instead of food. And now, the food was dancing dangerously along his gut and he knew that it was only a short while before puking.
On the other hand, Lisa threw a cursory glance at Omar and realized that he had gone pale and his forehead was filled with sweat. At this, she panicked and she saw him grunt albeit in a low voice.
‘Hey, Omar, what’s wrong.’
‘Huh, what did you say Lisa.’ Omar said as he turned to face her.
‘I asked you if you were okay, you don’t look too good.’
‘I am okay, I’m just feeling queasy.’ Omar said that he was not just feeling nauseous, he had started having a stomach ache that was proving to be quite sharp, it was as though thousands of ants were climbing on him causing him to feel numb and shards of glass were being used to piece him. sweat rolled in large drops from his forehead.
‘Okay, do you need us to stop somewhere so that you can calm down?’
On second thought, Omar realized that he could not keep holding on. ‘Yes, I think ill stop just beside this road.’
Immediately he stopped it was as though his guts decided they had had enough. Blindly opening the car door, he stood outside as he puked his guts out. He felt weak and his stomach felt like it was clumping, yet the pain seemed as though it was intensifying, leaving him feeling helpless. He supported himself in the car. Somehow, he managed to climb back into the seat and attempted to place his head between his legs to quell nausea but it was not working.
By this moment, Lisa had already switched on the lights in the car, and even though she did not know it, her face was scrunched up with fear and concern.
‘Hey, can you still drive?
Shaking his head, made Omar feel even worse.
‘Okay, then let’s exchange seats. Are you sure it’s just nausea Omar, this does not look normal?’
‘My stomach is aching.’ Omar said in between deep breaths and gasps.
‘Why didn’t you say so earlier, we would have already gone to the hospital. Okay, then come here, let me do the driving for now.’
With her help, he moved to the passenger seat and she got it and drove him. She was quite fast ad stopped at a pharmacy for some drugs. Immediately, the car came to a stop, she alighted and went to the shop, panic clearly showing on her face. Immediately after she had described the symptoms, they realized that he had a stomach virus and gave him some antibiotics. On getting inside the car, he gave him the medicine and then drove them home.
By the time they got home, even though the pain had become a dull thing in the background, he was still feeling disoriented and weak. With her help, they got to their room and it was at that instant that they realized that they had never shared a room since their marriage and the thought sent their nerves into overdrive. Lisa swallowed loudly before helping him sit on the bed.
‘Let me go and prepare a bath for you, perhaps you will feel better after bathing.’
Omar’s throat suddenly felt clogged and his nose closed. Tears shimmered just beneath his eyelids and he could no longer bear to watch her. she was so good to him. He who did not deserve that kindness, made him want to dig out his heart and present it to her on a platter.
‘Thanks, Lisa.’ Omar said with a slightly hoarse voice.
‘Okay, if you feel any discomfort just call me.’ To that, Omar just nodded and sat on the bed.
On the other hand, Lisa could not explain what she was feeling in words. Initially, she was feeling angry at him for the way he had treated her and her family, yet the moment he got sick, it was as though something had gotten stuck in her pipes making breathing hard. Her heart clenched with pain and she desired to take it all away. Even when she knew that he had wronged her, she still cared for him.
Opening the tap in the bathtub, she sat on a stool in the bathroom as she waited for the water to fill while she was lost in thought. She knew her heart belonged to him no matter how much he had hurt her. she also knew it was stupid to desire something with him but she still did. It was as though her heart did not consider the fact that he was the one who had caused her and her family pain. Every time she replayed how he was in the car; she felt her heart clenching.
Lisa what do you really want, she said as she stood to touch the temperature of the water. After touching it and realizing the temperature was okay. She went and called him, only to find him in a daze. He looked so weak and lonely that it hurt her heart.
‘Hey Omar, come on and bathe, the water is ready.’
