Chapter 41: Do you really love him?

Elly cried sorrowfully and hysterically in the hall which attracted many people in the area.

"How awful that man is! He did not feel that he was loved that's why he bullied that little girl to cry like that!"

"He looked handsome but he turned out to be a pervert."

Alexis Hargreaves was spontaneously reprimanded and people talked behind his back, he scanned his eyes around, the brutality made the surrounding people frightened.

He's hurt because of her tears.

He did not know how to coax her and did not want to stand still and just stay there for everyone to talk behind his back, Alexis Hargreaves forced her to stand and pulled her into the car.

"Why are you crying? Let me take you to a place where you can cry loudly. It is a place where no one can hear you."

Elly cried because of dizziness. Her mind went black, then when she was inside the car, she made an awful sound.

Alex turned to the driver's seat and leaned towards Elly to fasten her seat belt.

When he raised his head, he saw teardrops forming on her eyes, his heart went soft and his voice also became gentler.

"When we arrive there, you can cry however you want."

He moved his fingers to wipe away her tears.

Alex drove to the beach; he went to the other side of the car to open the car door for Elly.

He said calmly, "Alright, you can cry now. No matter how loud you cry, how many tears you cry, no one can stop you"

Elly was briefly surprised by the place he took her to. She was silent, walked slowly towards the sea where she calmly looked at the blue color of both the sky and the sea.

Beside her, she heard a small cough from Alex.

"Are you in trouble because of Lady Elliot?"

Elly did not answer and pretended as if she had heard nothing.

Alex continued guessing. "Did John hurt you?"

When she heard John Elliot's name, Elly's body froze, but she remained silent. Seeing her reaction when she heard John's name, Alex felt unhappy and jealous so he just kept his mouth shut.

Elly sat down slowly and stared at the open seas ahead of her in a motionless state. Alex became very worried about her.

It was just a while ago that she cried frantically, now she's very silent and dumbfounded.

He sat down beside her, reached out to coax her, but in the end he stopped halfway, he lowered his hand and leaned back. Alex leaned back on his arms, his arrogant and careless sitting figure was very attractive.

"If you feel unhappy, cry it out. I promise not to laugh."

Her reply was a bit sarcastic. "When did you start being a good person?" Elly pouted.

Alex didn't kept his promise, he laughed out loud and said "You are more adorable when you are less awkward"

Alex instantly regretted his words as soon as it came out of his mouth, perhaps his confession will add another problem in Elly's mind. She considered that he was kidding when he blurted out those words.

Alex did not forget the main purpose of their talk, he immediately returned to the topic. "You cried because the Lady Elliot because she's making it difficult for you, right? Although you were hurt, you still stayed at the Elliot's house and endured the hostility of Lady Elliot. Do you really love him?"

Elly lowered her head and sighed heavily, felt that she was a burden for John for the first time.

"I do not know." Elly's voice was very small, the more she spoke, the more painful she felt.

"I only knew that John gave up many things because of me, he sacrificed a lot. My whole life could not pay off for what he gave me. I owe him a lot."

Feeling that she became sentimental, she did not forget to add more blame to the person who was setting beside her. "Now that I have been fired, I don't know how long will I be able to pay off my debt?"

Elly raised her head; in the bright sunlight she saw Alex shinning. She didn't like that dazzling bright light, so she immediately turned to look at something else.

"Can you take me home now?"

"Where to? Do you want to go home to the Elliot Family's house?" Alex asked, he was very annoyed when Elly nodded.

"Aren't you afraid that Lady Elliot will make it more difficult for you to stay there?" Alex glanced at the time on the clock. Elly shook her head, she knew that John will come home soon, she also needed to talk to him about her resignation.

Elly correctly guessed, the moment she opened the door to the house, Lady Elliot was drinking tea with John in the living room.

"Why are you home now? Shouldn't you still be at work right now? " Mrs. Elliot leisurely took a sip ont her cup of tea. A look filled with disdain at Elly, her sarcastic voice said, "Was she fired from her job? She went home early; she probably failed her interview. That is what useless person like her could do."

"Interview? Were you really fired?" John rushed to her side, he glanced to the bag of resumes. "I sent in my resignation." Elly did not mind Mrs. Elliot's sarcastic voice and gently looked at John. "As expected of me. Are you happy? Now you can rest."

John looked at her crying smile, very heartbreaking, but he could not soften his heart's resolve. "Elly, now that you have already quit from your job at Alex's office, promise me that you will never go come back, okay?"

Elly replied with a light smile. Mrs. Elliot's voice sounded sour. "Huh, I'm after to say this but Alex' office is the only place that accepts staff like her. If you will beg them to get you back, they will not agree.

"Mom! She quit her job and struggled for a job interview today, surely she still felt uncomfortable. Can you not say those things to her?

She was unhappy to see Mrs. Elliot.

"The companies that will accept Elly will be losing their own power." Ms. Elliot was embarrassed by her son in front of Elly, and because of this, she felt both heartbroken and angry. She blamed everything on her, that because of her, John would talk to her disrespectfully. She dropped the tea cup on the table to vent out her anger, the sound of the porcelain cup falling on the floor echoed throughout the room, making the atmosphere in the living room difficult to breathe. "If she is so talented, how would I ask her about the interview today? Was there a company who hired her yet?"

The moment Elly entered the door, John saw her red eyes, he also somewhat guessed the result. Now, as he listened to his mother who blatantly exposed her, he does not want to make her sadder. But Elly was quick to react, she said bitterly. "Auntie, today I failed the interview. Tomorrow I will continue to try. Don't worry." Ms. Elliot was very afraid her son might discover all the awful words that she once said to Elly when he was not around. So she hurriedly pretended to frustratedly go back to the room.

"Yes, I know you are good. I will wait for good results." John looked at his mother's angry expression and didn't know what to say. He also felt ashamed that he was caught between two important women in his life, he sighed tiredly. He had surgery this morning and he rushed home without rest. He wanted to talk to his mother privately, so that she would make it less difficult for her to live in this house but it seemed he was still a step behind.

She returned to her own room and Elly lay limp on the bed. She thought about Mrs. Elliot and John, on how to satisfy of Mrs. Elliot. Then she thought wildly about Alex in a confusing way.

When she lost control and cried out in a public place, he didn't let her cry alone. He also thoughtfully took her to the beach which made her quickly adjust her emotions. Alex was still bossy and cruel but he gave her a feeling of closeness and familiarity.

Elly was thinking about him when suddenly a consoling message was sent to her phone. Alex's messages are still dominant but now it became moderate. "I have not yet accepted your resignation. I will give you a few days off. You will have to return as my secretary after balancing your emotions. These are the boss's orders. Refusal are not allowed. "

The message is dominant, but full of decisive force. Elly was surprised when she felt the warmth in those words. Perhaps Alex was not as hard as his appearance

Chap 42: Suspension

The next day, before dawn, someone knocked on the door of Elly's room.

She freaked out a bit and after several minutes, Elly was totally awake. She got to the door and opened it. The first thing she saw was Miss Elliot's angry face.

"What kind of a woman are you? Don't think you can sleep in like that even if today is your day off. Do you know what time is it now?"

"Ma'am, It's not even 6 a.m yet." Elly's head began to hurt as Miss Elliot yelled at her, she tried her best not to shout back.

Miss Elliot curled up her lips. "It's already too late, you lazy girl! Be ready and clean the house for me. Some important guests are coming today. I can't welcome them with such a dirty floor."

She left, Elly stood there and gaped at what the lady said. Elly looked at the house and touched her growling stomach, she sighed and got back to her room. She shouldn't be surprised, Miss Elliot really wanted to torture her.

"Today is gonna be a long day." Elly mumbled while she mopped the floor.

Right after Elly finished her work, the bell rang. Miss Elliot opened the door.

Some ladies that looked luxurious and wealthy stepped in, they tended to change their shoes but Miss Elliot smiled at them, "No need to change your shoes, just go inside."

Elly watched the footprints that those high heeled shoes left on the floor, she had just cleaned the floor a few minutes ago, carefully.

"When they leave, don't forget to mop the floor again!" Miss Elliot said sternly when she passed by Elly.

Elly felt sad for the floor, then she heard Miss Elliot's voice.

"Elly, bring some coffee here!"

The ladies mowed when Elly came back with a tray with cups of coffee. One of them asked. "Who's this?"

Miss Elliot smiled softly but her eyes which were looking at Elly were full of contempt. "She's just a servant, don't mind her."

"Are servants nowadays look like this young and beautiful girl?" still that lady who asked Miss Elliot.

"She's beautiful but she is just a servant, useless." Her smile faded a little and she scolded Elly again. "If you are already finished, go and prepare food. Do I need to teach you this again? Idiot!"

Some of the ladies laughed, they seemed interested to watch a young and pretty servant being yelled at.

Ella was unhappy with what Miss Elliot said, she accidentally spilled some of the coffee, she was frightened, that's why the cup fell down and broke.

"What did you do? You can't even properly hold a tray, useless, such a useless girl!"

"I'm sorry." As she was being insulted in front of all these people, she felt that she shouldn't explain anything.

"Clean it up! Don't you know what to do, huh?" Miss Elliot angrily kicked Elly's body.

A Madam tapped on her shoulder and told her to stay calm. "It's okay, don't be angry because of the accident, it's just a cup of coffee."

Elly tried hard not to cry, she bowed her head and quickly picked up the broken glasses, she could still hear Miss Elliot when the lady shouted.

"Do it quickly and go away, don't you dare show your face in front of me!"

Elly's tears fell from her eyes. She tried to stay calm, she thought of John, thought of all that he sacrificed for her. As she bent over to clean the broken cup, the ladies continued their conversation.

"I heard the Young Master was already engaged. It looked like the validity of the marriage we arranged has gone?" The lady in purple was half joking.

When she heard about this, Elly's cleaning speed slowed down, anxiously, she waited for Ms. Elliot to respond.

Ms. Elliot laughed at the guests. "Why do you say so? Dear friend, sometimes the children are combustible and may go the wrong way but eventually they tend to go back to thr right path. Your family is noble enough and is respected nybthe communitd. If your daughter agrees to marry John, it will be our honor! "

"Lady Elliot, you make me feel much relief. Maybe we'll let the two kids go out and meet the next day. "

Ms. Elliot did this in front of Elly on purpose. Miss Elliot was felt happy when she saw Elly's face was full of fear. Under John's protection, Ms. Elliot felt that Elly became too arrogant, she wanted her to know who she is and wanter her to go away from her son.

Elly was in no mood to continue listening. When she thought of the image of John as he dated another girl, she felt pain in her heart. She hurriedly picked up the last piece of the broken glass and left the living room.

She could not continue to see Ms. Elliot's eyes filled with satisfaction.

At the hospital, John Elliot sat on the bench and he found himself too weak and tired.

The patient was not taken to the hospital in time, because of this, John was unable to save his life.

He saw another life pass in front of him and couldn't do anything about it.

When he left the operating room, the patient's family was very agitated and insisted on blaming him.

He tried to explain but they did not accepted, he felt very tired and exhausted.

Other doctors tried to help him but the family members did not want to hear their explanation.

They surrounded him, forced him to return the patient's life back. They

only left when the hospital's manager had arrived.

The manager realized that John's condition wasn't good, he allowed John to rest at home for a few days and asked him to wait for the new decision from the management.

John didn't say anything, he just nodded his head and left. He came home with a tired face. Elly was the first person to recognize the unusual thing in him. "What's wrong with you?"

John told her what happened at the hospital as Ms. Elliot sat next to them.

After their conversation , she got angry and pointed at Elly's face.

"It was all because of her! She is the comet that brings bad luck to you! "

"Mom, don't say things like that!" Said John.

"Since you knew her, your career has gone down, things were all messed up."

"Mom, stop it!" John's patience reached its limit, he roared angrily. "Can you keep quiet for a few minutes? I have had enough."

Ms. Elliot was stunned by John's scream, his face was very angry which made the two women worried.

Everyone thought it was just a small incident, it affected John's career a lot.

The family of the dead patient had made the problem more serious.

The manager had to suspend his work and did not let him do any operation.

John's mood got worse as days goes by. He walked around the house with a gloomy face and didn't even talk.

Ms. Elliot looked at her son who ate and drank like a robot, she suggested, "The treatment that the hospital offered made me disappointed. This is an opportunity for you to change your job."

John Elliot did not answer, he quietly ate his food that Elly put in his bowl, he felt like food he put in his mouth have no taste.

Ms. Elliot continued to persuade him. "The Elliot company needs a new manager. I think you should leave the hospital and try this new job. Maybe you'll like it."

"Not interested." John said coldly. She still did not gave up, Ms. Elliot tried to convince him again. "Your father is getting older. Sooner or later, you have to inherit the family business."

John lost his patience. "You knew that I'm totally not interested in business. I love my job, I love being a doctor, I don't want to do things I hate."

"It's our family's company. Do you want to leave it to an outsider when both me and your dad pass away?" Ms. Elliot retorted angrily.

"I don't care!" John said stubbornly. "The company has nothing to do with me."

Ms. Elliot couldn't stand John's stubbornness anymore, she hit her hands on the table and stood up.

"Tomorrow, go to the hospital to file for resignation. After that, get back home immediately to inherit the company!"

Ms. Elliot quickly walked towards her room and slammed the door strongly to express her anger.

John put his bowl on the table, he lost his temper and kicked the table. That made the table slide, the food above it scattered a bit.

Elly suddenly raised her voice. "Don't be upset, I think your mom said that because she loves you, she worries about you. Why don't you try to listen to her wishes? You haven't tried it yet, how will you know if you hate it or not? "

Chap 43: Account freeze

What Elly said surprised John. She understood how much he loved his job, how could she convince him to quit?

As he looked into her gentle eyes, he couldn't get angry. John and Elly knew Ms. Elliot will give them a hard time. He was afraid that sooner or later, he must inherit the family's company but now, John still wanted to do what he liked to do the most.

"Elly, let me have time to think."

Elly did not reply, she gently held John's hand and smiled warmly. "John, I'm sure everything will be fine.''

When Ms. Elliot did not see John on her room to appease her as usual, she immediately returned. What she saw was John and Elly were holding each other's hands, her eyes were red with anger, she pointed at Elly and shouted. "You still want to seduce Johnnie after everything that has happened, what do you want from him now? Don't you feel ashamed?"

"Mom, why do you need to reprimand her?" John said, he didn't even realize he was trying to protect Elly. "You said Elly is unemployed and clingy, that also means that you are angry with me because my work was suspended and I am temporarily unemployed. Elly still have to go and find a job, why can't you be nicer to her?"

"What does she have to make you love her that much? She is just a comet that brought us nothing but bad luck, a useless and clingy thing." Ms. Elliot shouted angrily.

"What she has done for us hasn't changed your thoughts about her? I don't think you are that rigid." John stood up and faced Mrs. Elliot.

"Rigid? Old fashioned?" Ms. Elliot was stunned when her son argued with her. Hatred filled her mind, Mrs. Elliot  looked towards Elly, her eyes were full of hatred . "I will never accept her. This house is mine, I have the right to decide who stays and who leaves. You, get out of my house!!!"

Ms. Elliot pointed straight to the door.

At first, when they quarreled, Elly just stood at one side and blamed herself. She was the reason for John and his mom's discord. When Ms. Elliot told her to get out of her house, she also felt that she didn't want to stay there anymore.

She pulled John's sleeve. "John, it would be better if I leave."

John interrupted her. "Well then, as you wish, this is your house and I'll take Elly out of here."

His resolute voice made Elly shocked. John grasped her hand and he pushed the main door open it. Elly followed him, she didn't dare to look back and see Mrs. Elliot's expression.

As soon as the door of the house closed behind them, Elly nervously rebuked, "John, where are you taking me? You shouldn't say that to your mom. Go back home."

John did not answer, he just continued to drag her away. Elly tried to pulled her hand but she couldn't escape from him. She felt that if they left, Mrs. Elliot's outrageous feelings towards her would grow. Things will only get worse.

Feeling Elly tried to pull her hands back, John was disappointed and unhappy. He was afraid of hurting her, so he stopped and gently rubbed her wrist. "Elly, don't you want to live with me?"

Elly shook her head and softly said. "We've always been together." She looked deeply into his eyes and cautiously tried to convince him. "Well, it isn't worth arguing. Your words will hurt her, you shouldn't hurt your mom who loves you. "

"Elly, you are my fiancée." He kissed Elly's forehead, and said seriously. "Wherever you go, I will always be with you. "

They underestimated Ms. Elliot's ploy.

John took Elly to a hotel to rent a room but the receptionist smiled politely and returned the card to him. "Sorry sir! Your card has been locked. Do you have other card?"

Elliot was surprised but he didn't pay much attention to it, he took another card and gave it to the receptionist.

"Please use this card."

Something flashed in his mind, he seemed to realize something, at the same time the receptionist frowned, she seemed to have lost her patience. "Sorry, sir, none of your cards can be used."

Ms. Elliot froze all of Elliot's accounts, she didn't leave him any money.

A guest was waiting for his turn, he rolled his eyes at them and said, "If you don't have money, get out of here!"

Elly knew why why Ms. Elliot did that, she tried to persuade John again.

"John, please go back home."

Being criticized by a stranger, John felt quite embarrassed. Elly repeatedly advised him, this made his mood even more frustrated. He snapped. "What will you do if I came back? Do you have enough money to rent a room? "

Elly was confused. She has two bank cards, a supplementary card linked to Elliot's main card, which must be frozen also by Ms. Elliot. Another card is for her salary from Hargreaves company, in which her resignation was not approved yet, so the salary hasn't been transferred to the account.

Elliot knew his attitude was too rude, so he immediately hugged her, he whispered. "Alright, don't worry. I will find ways to deal with money."

John called his friend to borrow him some cash.

His friend is a dashing guy with shiny hair. He gave the money to John and mouth whistled towards Elly. "God, who is this beautiful lady? Why didn't I see her before? "

John's elbow nudged him in the stomach, his eyes glared at him.

"Don't say worthless things! You can leave now."

"Come on, just tell me her name. Whenever I have some pretty girls I will share with you, ok? "

Elly blushed when she heard what that guy said.

"Why are you so nosy? Don't offend her. " John lost his temper.

"Okay, I'm going." The guy deliberately whispered in his ear.

Women today needs to be very practical, men who do not have money should be thrown away sooner or later!" John was furious, his jaws opened and his fists clenched as he gazed at his friend.

Elly watched the scenario from beginning to end, she did not feel angry or sad. She was thinking of how to earn some money or how to get a job, so that they will not have to borrow money from friends. She remembered Alex's message. "I won't accept your resignation. I will give you a few days off. You will have to go back and be my little secretary. "

She pondered whether she should return to Hargreaves company to work. She did not have time to do interviews at other companies. She decided to return after hearing John's midnight phone call with Ms. Elliot. They rented at the hotel, the rooms were connected by a door and they shared a balcony. She was awakened by his angry shout. "I don't need Elliot's family money but why did you have to freeze the card where I put all the money that I earned from my job as a doctor?" Elliot standed outside the balcony, cellphone in his hand, he leaned on the wall wearily. "Mom! As an adult, I can decide which way I want to go. Don't make me do what you want. "

"Besides Elly, I won't marry anyone else. Never think of things like that again. I'll never betray her."

It was easy to guess who was on the other side of the phone, she bit her lip. She silently went back to bed. John's account was frozen, and he could not return to the hospital for work. They had spent all the money John borrowed from his friend and she has no relatives.

The idea of returning to Hargreaves company became clearer in Elly's mind. While Elly was thinking about her job, John got a call from Alexis. "I don't need you to care for my possessions." Elliot held the phone tightly. Alex laughed loudly over the phone. "Ha ha, I want to see how much you love her. The girl you love has to suffer with you, loser! It just proves how big our love is."

"I'll wait, let me see what a loser like you can do after leaving the Elliot family" Alexis Hargreveas coldly hung up.
