Chapter 22: Chapter 22

ANGELIQUE SLOAN’S POV

Compared to the hospital that Greyson and I went to in search of my filthy mother, this place is much better. All of the medical staff here seemed to be occupied with all of the patients that come and go, unlike in those two buildings, where they didn’t care if anyone inside lost their lives.

"Angelique, over here," Lian said from afar. Turning around to find her, I saw her at the edge of the second floor, waving at me and sending me a gesture to go up.

She brought me to her father's ward the instant that I stepped on the same floor as her. As I anticipated, her father was asleep. "Is he in a coma?" I softly asked. I placed the fruits above the table that was beside his bed.

Lian nodded once. “He’s been unconscious, and his pulse keeps getting weaker each day. Mom and I couldn’t sign the operation agreement because of the fact that we lack in terms of finance.” She had a blank expression, but her eyes were clearly in agony as she watched her father fight for his life.

I really see this world as unjust.

The gods above persistently let those innocent ones suffer greatly until they ran out of the will to live. And let those wicked ones live in prosperity.

“Let’s go. Greyson already gave me his bank card. I have to hurry home, so let’s not waste time,” I mumbled.

I hurriedly paid up the current medical expenses for Lian’s father and even left some extra payment, which might still be needed for the rest of his stay until he gets discharged.

This was the first time that I ever saw Lian’s smile, as if she were genuine with her emotions. “I don’t know how I could ever thank you for this, Miss Sloan,” she shyly said.

I let out a short chuckle. “You’re welcome, and please just call me Angelique.”

Lian nodded. “I still have to stay outside the operation room, Angelique. You can leave without me.” She pointed over to the direction where her father was being operated on.

A faint smile curled on my lips as I bid farewell to her. Letting my feet lead me anywhere, my heart suddenly ached as I heard a familiar woman’s voice from afar.

“I swear I recognize that voice,” I whispered to myself.

I quickly tracked the location of the person speaking, and I found myself staring inside the ward of a grown woman—my mother.

“How is this possible? W-why is she here?” I covered my mouth with my bare palm before she could sense that I was outside.

This can’t be a mere coincidence, right?

I can’t stop myself from wondering if it was Lian herself who knew that my mother was here and that she used her father as an excuse to let me see my mother.

My heartbeat went crazy as I ran out of the hospital itself and returned to where Greyson was. I don’t want to continue getting anxious all by myself. I must think with a cool mind before I act.

“Well, that was quick,” Greyson commented as he gave me a kiss on the cheek. “What happened to Lian’s father?” he asked with a hint of concern.

I returned Greyson’s bank card before I informed him about everything that occurred back there. And just like me, he was quite shocked to hear that my mother was staying in that hospital.

“We’ve been searching for her for a long time, and now she’s suddenly right under your nose?” Greyson grunted as his eyebrows were almost connected together when he furrowed them.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I thought the same. I even accused Lian in my mind, thinking she might have a clue about what I did. Maybe she brought me there on purpose, and her visit wasn’t unintentional,” I said.

“What are you going to do about your mother now that you’ve seen her hideout?” Greyson inquired as the two of us sat beside each other. “Once your mother fully recovers, I doubt that she wouldn’t do anything against you. She’s definitely thinking of seeking vengeance,” he added.

My lips slightly parted as I gasped. “She has a wide connection with deadly men and people from the government. I’m sure that she’d find me quickly.”

Greyson heaved out a loud sigh as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders. “You wouldn’t have been worrying about this if you managed to finish her off together with your father that night,” he uttered while slowly caressing my left shoulder.

“I was so confident that both of them were no longer breathing before I left that place!” I began to get furious because of how I felt like he was blaming me for being careless.

“Why are you yelling? I’m not your enemy here, Angelique,” Greyson pouted. “The only advice I can give you is that you should send her to where your father is as soon as possible, before the situation gets out of hand. There’s a high risk that you’d fall into her trap if she moves ahead of you,” he mumbled in a detailed manner.

“But how am I supposed to do that in a hospital? I don’t think I can kill anyone there, even if I get as sneaky as I could.” I shook my head in disapproval of his advice.

“Why are you asking me how? I haven’t even murdered anyone yet in my entire life—only you have an experience.” Greyson rolled his eyes as he started mocking me.

“You know what?” I stood up from my seat after I aggressively removed his arm around my shoulders. “I shouldn’t have run all the way here to hear your thoughts. I should’ve handled things on my own,” I coldly said as I left his office.

I made up my mind to return to that hospital and confront my mother. I assume that she already heard news about my visit there. Maybe the staff there has been blabbering about what I did. Or maybe my mother saw my name somewhere among the lists of visitors.

Nevertheless, Greyson is such a letdown.
