Chapter 6: Chapter 6
: Party
→Narrator: Kam
"I can't believe we're actually doing this." Amir groaned beside me as we stopped in front of Haliya's mansion, later that evening.
"Asa is going to be here." I told him.
He rolled his eyes. "I guess that's enough reason for you to be here but why did you have to drag me along?"
"Cause we're friends and friends don't allow each other go through shit alone."
He pretended to gag as he slipped out of the car.
I laughed as I fell in step with him. "Chill. The others will be pulling up in a minute."
"Whatever, asshole. You owe me big time for all the shit you put me through."
Haliya throws the best, most elegant parties, with rich food and classy wine. You had to be on your best behaviour or you'd get kicked out by bouncers.
There was cool music, playing inside the massive house and not too many people had arrived.
We were sitting at a bar in one of the rooms, waiting for the others. And girls kept making passes on Amir and I, asking if we wanted a drink or wanted to dance. I refused them because i really didn't want to fuck shit up with Asa for the second time... What i didn't understand was why Amir refused them to. He had no reason to and all he was doing here was staring boredly at his phone, instead of trying to have fun.
But it was when a girl with long pink braids, all the way to her ankles, walked up to Amir and asked if he wanted to dance, that I lost my shit.
Amir's face remained stoic as he shook his head, no, at the girl, turning to the bar tender to order a drink. The girl stalked off, disappointed.
I frowned at him. "Stop being such a douchebag, douchebag."
"Huh?" He feigned ignorance, grabbing his drink and sipping slowly, a calm, questioning look in his eyes.
"Don't 'huh' me! And stop being an ice statue. That girl was interested."
"I wasn't." He deadpanned.
I massaged my forehead. "Just losen up and have fun. I have no idea what girls see in your pathetic ass anyway."
He laughed. "Jealous?"
I tossed him an 'are you serious?' look.
He rolled his eyes but the grin remained. "Pot kettle, much? I see you doing the same thing."
"Duh. Unlike you, I've got Asa."
His grin disappeared and he focused back on his drink pensively. "After everything you said to her, you'd need a miracle if you ever want her to trust you again."
"What?" My heart thudded painfully.
He was still concentrating on his drink, calmly.
"What I'm saying is, shit you don't want her to do to you, don't do it to her. Fuck you doing entertaining another girl's nudes? That's fucked up, bro."
I grimaced at his words, my heart, slamming within me, guilt crippling my spirits.
I looked away, clenching my fists at the truth in his words.
Another girl, with long Fulani braids, sashayed up to us and boldy whispered something into Amir's ears.
This time, Amir laughed and whispered something back, causing the girl to giggle.
"You'll be okay?" He asked, standing up, his hand around the girl's waist.
"Yeah. Go have fun."
He nodded at me and left me to my thoughts.
I gripped my drinking glass hard, remembering all the things i had said to her that night.
You can't even say it back, can you?
Fuck! You thought i wouldn't get mad?!
I just think you're overreacting!
Leaning back against my seat, i massaged my forehead tiredly.
Asa... I imagined her beautiful face in front of me, smiling... And then i remembered how hurt she had looked when i had yelled at her.
Maybe we're not right for this type of thing... Maybe I'm not right for this type of thing.
I had hurt her, knowing how much trust issues she had. Knowing how much shit she had been through... Knowing how badly she wanted a relationship with her mother.
Maybe I don't deserve her after all...
Someone came, moments later and occupied the barstool Amir just left vacant, a girl, I could tell from her soft floral perfume. But it was when she ordered, and I heard her voice, that I looked up at her, taking a double take.
"Ariel?"
She turned to look at me, her eyes, going wide in surprise. "No fucking way! DeAngeles? We finally meet in person! What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same thing."
The bar tender brought her drink and I watched as her bedazzled fingers curled around her glass cup.
"A friend of a friend invited me. I actually didn't consider going until she told me there'll be actual princes attending and I imagined hooking up with one at the end of the party. Do you know what that means?" Her eyes were glowing excitedly. "I could actually say I was royally fucked and mean it!"
I laughed at her excitement, remembering how bubbly she was.
"So, where's your girlfriend? I'd like to commend her for getting and keeping you."
And my good mood plummeted.
"We're actually taking a break for a while. She got invited to the party but I don't think she'll attend."
Her eyes furrowed worriedly. "Hope there's no problem?"
"She saw the er... Shots you sent me... Read our chats too."
Her eyes bulged in incredulous shock. "Oh my God, Kam, I'm so sorry. Shit shit! This is all my fault."
"Technically."
"I need to fix this, Kam."
"No. No, Ariel, there's no need to. We'll fix this on our own."
She shook her head, stubbornly. "No." She touched my arm, her eyes going soft. "You're a great guy, Kam, and if she can't see that, maybe she's not what's best for you. I want to put things right with her and if she sees you as anything less than who you really her, then fuck it. She's not worth it."
"And I don't want you talking about her like that." I warned Ariel sternly. Fighting or not, Asa was an amazing person that not everyone got to see or understand. "It's all a misunderstanding that blew up big time. I don't want you fixing my messes, Ariel."
Her smile was razor sharp as she sipped from her wine glass and for the first time, I noticed her red, red lips. "I make no promises."
