Chapter 4: Chapter 4
: Fawked up
→Narrator: Kam
"Man, you fucked up," Amir said calmly from where he was perched on my window seat.
"Shit, yeah!" Jordan guffawed, "but at least, he fucked up right. Dude, have you seen the girl? Kam, you have to give me her number. If you won't tap that, I will!"
"Pig!" Dave smacked him upside the head. "We're supposed to advice Kam, not encourage him to do stupid shit!"
Osahon sighed at Dan. "I thought you were with Kosi?"
"Ay. She deaded me." He pressed a hand to his chest, his face in a mock expression of pain. "She my homie now."
Those pests were shouting in my head. It was seven in the fucking morning and here they were, shouting in my head.
When I reached home last night, I was trembling, out of my mind. I tried calling Asa but it was Kosi that picked, telling me it wasn't good to be calling her now. That I should give it some time. Give her a little space.
Space!
I didn't sleep till six in the morning, so you can understand my annoyance when my friends barged into my room moments later, dishing out sage advice that I didn't ask for.
"So... What are you going to do now?" Amir asked. "School starts in like-" he checked his diamond encrusted wristwatch, "ten minutes."
I murmured something unintelligible but they didn't seemed to grab I wanted to be left alone.
So much had happened since yesterday. From Kosi's revelation about her relationship with Trevor, to Jemi's arrest and my fight with Asa.
I couldn't even call it a fight without cringing. I didn't want us to fight...
And she was leaving.
I felt like she was slipping away, out of my grasp, and I didn't like that. I didn't want that.
I love her...
But she doesn't even believe that.
Going to school was going to be torture, but I didn't have any hooky cards left and I didn't feel like doing more chores to get them back.
My friends remained in the room while I cleaned up and dressed for school.
I would have driven myself but Amir slipped into the driver seat of my rover.
"Don't want you crashing into anything now, do I?" He deadpanned, strapping himself to the seat.
"Asshole." I scoffed.
He rolled his eyes at me. "Jerkface. You're lucky I'm not kicking your stupid ass to the curb because of what you did to Asa."
"I do not want to talk about that right now, stupid." I grumbled, looking away from him. No doubt, everyone saw me as the bad guy now.
"I do nuh wonna tulk abou dah roit now, schewpid," he mimicked in a very very horrible accent.
"I don't sound like that." I frowned.
"Whatever, asshat. Glorify your God that I keep you around sometimes even after you do stupid shit. Everyone knows I'm doing you a huge favour, remaining your friend."
"I was beginning to forget what a big ego you have. Thanks for reminding me."
"You're welcome." He nodded sagely. "Comes with being a prince and all. It's not something a commoner like you would understand."
"Really big ego."
The familiarity of the whole conversation actually had me grinning.
I leaned back as I let him drive, bantering back and forth.
"Dude, don't you have any Bob Marley... Or Fela at least? I fucking hate this electric pop playlist you've got."
"Shame." I clucked his tongue. "It probably hates you, too."
I would never admit this out loud... But, I was glad Amir was here with me. Among the guys, he was my closest friend, even though he was kind of closed off, almost rude to me when I first came, but we quickly became good friends after a while.
Amir usually comes off as intimidating and cold, radiating this almost mean, mysterious aura that drew you to his mystery and also made you want to stay away from him. But when you get to know him, he's actually very cool and friendly... Egotistic... But still cool.
"Who can hate me with a face as pretty as mine?"
Yeah. Really egotistic.
"What pretty face?" I deadpanned. "You look like Lucifer, that cat, in Cinderella."
"Haters gonna hate."
In many ways, he was right. Amir was certainly good looking in a dark, almost mysterious way. He never dated, though. I don't know why but I've never seen him interested in any girl, no matter how much greenlight they threw his way.
I rolled my eyes, nonetheless grinning at whatever he was saying. Grateful I could count on him to lift my spirits.
*
It was the last day of school. At least, for the semester. After today, we had two weeks to ourselves before we had to start the torture Olympics all over again in January.
Students were happy about this, smiling to themselves and the teachers had a tough time, trying to keep us under control.
"Trouble in paradise?" Haliya asked, a deadly smile on her lips as she sidled up to me after school.
"What do you mean?" I looked down at her.
"You and that witch." She laughed sweetly. "C'mon, Kam. We all knew it wouldn't last between you two. At least, you managed for a month or two. So tell me, you fucked her, right?"
I snapped, whipping around to face Haliya angrily.
"I swear, if you don't shut up, right now, Haliya-"
My clenched fists were shaking at my sides as I tried to bridle my anger but when I looked up and found Asa staring at us, it disappeared.
There she was hiding behind one of the pillars.
Was she spying on me?
The thought made me smile, but when I saw the hardened glare in her eyes, I realized that we weren't in the clear yet.
She dragged her gaze from me to Haliya and turned and left.
I left Haliya's side.
"Don't go after her, Kam. You'll only regret it." She called out. But I didn't listen, my sneakers, eating up the distance, but when I rounded the corner where I could have sworn I saw her run into. She wasn't there.
She was gone.
"I told you." Haliya smirked when I returned to my car, deflated.
"Fuck. Off." I growled lowly, a stern warning in my voice but she shrugged it off easily.
"We're friends, Kam. I'm on your side here."
"What do you want?"
"I need a ride." That smile wouldn't leave her lips.
"You have a car."
"Somma dropped me off and we're kind of fighting, right now."
"Well, what about Caro or Zain?" I mentioned her best friends.
She rolled her eyes. "How daft do you have to be, Kam? I obviously just want to spend time with you. "Isn't it obvious, genius? Is that too much to ask? We've not hung out in a while and I miss you."
The pain in her voice hit me square in the gut and I dragged an exasperated hand through my hair, blowing out a frustrated breath.
"Fine." I opened the door to the passenger side of the car. "Get in."
She jumped in happily, strapping herself to the seat.
"I'm throwing a party tonight." She told me giddily as I eased out of the parking lot.
I murmured something vague but she was undeterred.
"Some of my friends from Yola are going to be there. I'm talking royalty, Kam. My brother is coming too and I want you to meet him."
I grunted something incomprehensible as she continued.
"Of course, there's going to be classy food. Expensive wine and good music. Not like the stupid animalistic bashes that Jordan organizes. It's all going to be about class and elegance."
Another grunt.
"Of course, the rest of the gang will be coming to. I miss watching Dave argue with Lola and I miss the company I get from you guys. I swear, Zain acts like my mum sometimes and I feel like Caro talks behind my back. Somma is just a pushover with a pretty face. I miss you guys."
This time, I didn't grace her with a response.
"I invited Jemi too and with any luck, he's going to bring that slut and the witch along with him."
My head snapped to her do fast, I almost got a whiplash. "You invited Jemi?"
"Yeup." She had a smug smile on her lips as she examined her nails.
"And he actually agreed... Willingly?"
She rolled her eyes. "I had to blackmail him a little bit. Not something I've not done before. He almost didn't crack but I used his biggest weakness against him."
I raised an eyebrow at her, already pulling into the driveway of her huge. "What's that?"
"Basketball. I heard of his little... Ah... Run in with the police last night."
"How did you hear of that?"
"I have my ways." She waved me off, nonchalantly. "Anyway, everyone knows he wants to get into NBA. He's probably hoping for a miracle to get his broke ass into university on scholarship."
I didn't mention that his mum was richer than god.
"So, I promised not to blow the whistle on him if he came with that witch."
"Do not call her that!" I snapped.
She shrinked into her car seat, them sniffed and looked away from me, her hand, twisting the diamond encrusted ring on her index finger.
I blew out a frustrated breath. "Dammit, I'm sorry, Liya."
"It's okay." Her voice became smaller. "I see you like her. Really really like her. I hope it works out between you two."
And she got out of the car, without bothering to shut the door.
I sighed, leaning to shut the door she had left open.
