Chapter 38: Chapter 38

“Hart!”

Myra frantically attempted to separate the two, but they continued on fighting. Obviously, Hart had the lead, but Jake simply refused to admit defeat.

“Stop it, both of you!” she shouted, but none of them listened. The two men had their fists on each other, unwilling to stop.

She glanced around them as Yuna calmly combed her hair with her fingers, standing casually while observing her own mirror image with her selfie camera. Obviously, Yuna didn’t give a damn about Jake right now, in contrast to how rumours spoke of her to be very clingy to Jake. Probably fame could change a person, Myra reckoned.

As they were in a secluded area on the thirteenth floor, the fight didn’t draw any commotion. For a CEO to be fighting with a man he worked with, furthermore over a woman, didn’t seem at all very gracious. Somehow, she needed to put an end to this, but what could she do? Shouting and attempting to pull them aside did nothing, because the men simply ignored her and carried on fighting.

“Are you just going to stand there and do nothing?” Myra eventually sought Yuna. The woman just smirked.

“What do you want to do, call security?” Yuna fluttered her eyelashes, moving about seductively as she sat down on a nearby bench. “I forgot to tell you, Miss Myra Yang. I’m pregnant, no less than three months. I can’t risk my pregnancy to stop two fighting bulls.”

“They’re going to get hurt!” Myra objected. “And you’re okay with that?”

“Don’t forget, your partner started it,” Yuna pouted her lips as she retrieved a thick lipstick pen and began applying it to her perfect lips. “Believe me, it’s useless to even stop Jake from anything. I’ve tried it and he never listens. Even when it comes from a perfect woman like me. So don’t blame yourself when he doesn’t listen to you.”

Seriously? Was this what this woman was all about, with her narcissist and uncaring attitude? Myra concerned herself with how the woman was even with Jake in the first place, even if they weren’t in a relationship. No matter what, Yuna was the mother of Jake’s child. Was she truly not bothered that Jake might get hurt at all?

Casting aside her worries, she took a few steps backward and dashed as fast as she could, before launching herself between the men, a bit more strongly this time.

“Stop it, you two! Get a hold of yourself!” Myra shrieked.

“Myra!” Hart suddenly was aware of how she was bleeding. It was now apparent to him she had hit her chin hard on something and cut it on something sharp.

She was feeling dizzy after how she had exerted so much force to separate them. Two hours had passed since they were supposed to have lunch, and her stomach rumbled from her hunger.

Jake realised what was happening, and hastily attempted to help her up, but Hart pushed him away angrily. He led Myra away, slowly heading back into the elevator.

“Hart, if it’s okay with you, can we go somewhere else?” Myra asked after the elevator reached the ground floor. She leant on Hart’s shoulder, feeling warm on him. Hart did still have this effect on her, even if her heart leaned towards Jake.

It will change, she reminded herself. Her mother had never been in love with her father at the start. Years of marriage had changed that.

“Where do you want to go?”

“I don’t want to go to a posh restaurant. Somewhere you fancy, Hart.”

He looked down at the woman, whose head was on his shoulder. Her eyes appeared relaxed, making her appear no doubt comfortable.

“Are you sure you want to go somewhere I fancy?”

She nodded silently. She had enough of all this drama, and she didn’t want to see Jake after what happened. Somehow, that he attempted to force-kiss her stuck tightly in her mind, and it made her fear for the future.

He picked up his phone and stared at it for a few seconds.

“Myra, will it be alright if we move up the meeting with the lawyer? It seems that he is free now.”

“I’m okay.” She shrugged, and they walked down the travelator to the indoor parking lot where Hart’s car was. Everything didn’t seem to go well today, so what could she even expect from the meeting with the lawyer?

Jake had been so close to kissing her. After she chose Hart instead and give herself to him fully, she couldn’t let Jake have his way with her. And right now, she didn’t just feel like having the wedding anymore. Maybe she could postpone it for a valid reason.

The drive took five minutes to reach a nice cosy bookworms’ cafe, which was literally named in that manner. She followed him in a rather surprised manner, allowing Hart to pull out a seat for her. Hart explained that this was one of his frequent hangout locations when he needed a break.

So this was another part she had failed to see in him. She smiled sweetly, trying to erase the kiss out of her mind. Hart was handsome and a great kisser. She should be able to cleanse herself of those unwanted feelings with Jake. That was not right for Hart. He had already done so much for her.

“Hart, have you ever thought of having children?” she chewed on her lip while engaging him in an emotional stare.

“Myra, it’s a bit early for us to be thinking about this,” came his reply. “You’re still in university. Don’t you need some time for yourself to enjoy yourself before welcoming a little one?”

He was right, but there was a bigger chance that the child was his. Myra hesitated to tell him the truth about her pregnancy, unsure if he was ready to have a child yet.

“I’m just wondering, have you ever thought of having a child in your life?”

His lips quivered. She didn’t understand, but it was such a deep question for him. He was having so much difficulty in answering her that he stared blankly at the wall in front of him for a few minutes.

“Myra, I… I’m not sure about this…”

She felt disappointed. If Hart had responded with some excitement, at least that would have given her some positivity about her pregnancy. At that juncture, she wasn’t sure how long she would have to go on keeping her secret. But one question bogged her. If Hart wasn’t ready, why had he never bothered with protection?

“Hello, sorry I’m late!” a warm voice broke her out of her thoughts. Hart looked glad as a tall and thin man walked towards them.

“This is Sean Law. my friend,” Hart introduced. “My girlfriend, Myra.”

Myra felt delighted for him to have introduced her in that manner, but she felt some skepticism in her about the impending marriage with Jake. How would the lawyer see her? A two-timer, or a gold-digger?

“Pleased to meet you, Miss Myra.”

The man offered his hand, and she accepted his handshake. Immediately, she withdrew her hand abruptly. Something about the man didn’t make her comfortable. Maybe she was just not accustomed to meeting strangers, she convinced herself.

“Hart has informed me about your situation,” the man said as he took out a black leather folder. “For now, I can explain to you that a political marriage isn’t much for you to worry about. Or if you feel better about it, you can think of it as a contract.”

“Hmm.” She listened intently, wondering if Jake would consent to the terms of the contract Sean would draft for her.

“And how long would this arrangement be?”

“I just need his help. Our families arranged the marriage, and I did not know of it until recently…”

“Don’t worry, Miss. Hart has told me everything about your case. I can say, for temporary financial aid, it’s a valid reason to draw up a contract. This way, you can protect your interests.”

She looked at Hart, and he nodded. She felt a little betrayed at how Hart had told this stranger everything without going through her. But time was running out. Whether this person was trustworthy, she had to go with Hart’s trust for him.

“I have two weeks more before the fixed date of the marriage. How soon do you think you can have the contract done?”

Hart smiled as she said those words, though she couldn’t understand why he appeared devious. She decided it was just his eagerness to be with her, that he was concerned about her getting too close to Jake.

“It can be done in the next few days. What do you say about a contract period of two years?”

“Two years?” She glanced at Hart, who just returned her stare calmly.

“Miss, I understand that your father’s businesses, where you are a named partner, are facing bankruptcy. In layman terms, I can only explain to you it isn’t magic for you to have these issues resolved. Two years is a valid period. After that, you can wash your hands of your marriage.”

“Sure. Yes, that’s what I want.”

She pondered about the possibility of her not getting involved with Jake any longer and living a new life with Hart. By that time, maybe they would be rich and in a different place. It was the best thing to do. Over love, she chose her obligation to Hart. It was a promise they both kept to each other.

Jake had Yuna. She would be most content with Hart. He had to be the father of her child, not Jake. Until she could be with him freely, she would persevere.
