Chapter 408: Chapter 408
Susan Wilde walked in after making a phone call and said, "I asked Iris, she says she’s really not feeling well and doesn’t want to move. I’ll bring some food back for her later, and that’ll be fine."
Julian Yardley felt uneasy after hearing this but restrained himself from going to see Iris.
He thought he had been spoiling her too much lately, making her start acting childishly and throwing a tantrum.
Despite feeling sorry, he knew he couldn’t afford to be soft-hearted when it wasn’t warranted.
A little past five o’clock, Landon Sutton and Simon Rhodes arrived one after the other. Shannon Quinn quietly pulled Landon Sutton to a corner and asked, "Is Peach coming?"
Landon Sutton lowered his gaze and said, "She’ll be here soon."
Shannon Quinn smiled, glanced at Sheila Yardley who was helping in the kitchen, feeling both excited and anxious.
As soon as Simon Rhodes arrived, he sat directly next to Susan Wilde, fished out a small box from his pants pocket, and handed it to Susan Wilde saying, "Didn’t you lose your lipstick the other day when we went out? I got you a new one, see if you like it."
Susan Wilde was a bit surprised as she took the box. She had casually mentioned losing the lipstick, feeling it was a bit of a pity and didn’t expect him to remember and buy her a new one.
"I’m not very knowledgeable about these things. The shades all look similar to me. I asked the store assistant to recommend some popular colors, and I thought this one might suit you, but I don’t know if you’ll like it."
Susan Wilde pursed her lips, nodded with a smile, "I like it."
Seeing this, Shannon Quinn jealously said to Landon Sutton, "We’ve been married for so long, and you haven’t given me a single lipstick. How can two brothers be so different?"
Landon Sutton glanced sideways at her, "I see you buying so many lipsticks, they all look similar anyway – red. One is enough; why buy so many? They’re all filled with lead and mercury; it’s not beneficial."
Shannon Quinn pouted, "Such a concrete-headed man."
Landon Sutton asked, "Where did you learn all those random terms?"
As everyone continued their banter, the doorbell rang.
Being closest to the door, Sheila Yardley ran over to open it, initially expecting Shannon Quinn’s friends but was stunned to see the man who often appeared in her nightmares...
Caleb Grant also paused upon seeing Sheila Yardley, but compared to her shocked fear, his surprise was momentary.
Peach sat nestled in Caleb Grant’s arm, appearing a bit reserved in the unfamiliar environment.
When Peach saw Sheila Yardley, she had apparently forgotten they had met before, but upon seeing Leo run over, Peach’s face lit up with a smile, sweetly calling out, "Brother!"
Peach swung her legs, and Caleb Grant bent down slightly to let her down. Leo then took her hand and led her into the house, taking out his favorite toys to play with Peach.
Shannon Quinn purposely didn’t go over to greet them, instead quietly observing their reactions and becoming even more convinced there was something between Caleb Grant and Sheila Yardley.
After Peach left, the two of them exchanged glances for several seconds before Sheila Yardley reluctantly collected herself and simply moved aside to let Caleb Grant in, without any words of greeting. She turned and walked back into the kitchen.
Caleb Grant glanced at her a few more times before stepping into the living room, joining the group with Landon Sutton and Simon Rhodes.
Shannon Quinn peeled two grapes, then got up to the kitchen, casually washing her hands, looking around. When Catherine Yardley went out to the balcony, Shannon Quinn asked, "Did you see that little girl earlier?"
Sheila Yardley’s hands paused as she prepared the vegetables, then she turned to Shannon Quinn, pretending to be calm, "What’s up?"
Shannon Quinn replied in a casual tone, "I think she looks a lot like you, her name’s Peach, Caleb Grant’s daughter."
Sheila Yardley forced a laugh, averting her gaze from Shannon Quinn and lowered her head, saying while arranging the vegetables, "Is that so?"
Shannon Quinn added, "You used to know Caleb Grant, right? I remember it was him who helped when Julian got into a fight and was caught."
Recalling those times, Sheila Yardley wished she had never met Caleb Grant. If she hadn’t interacted with him from then, maybe things wouldn’t have turned out .
Shannon Quinn didn’t directly ask Sheila Yardley but continued talking casually, "I heard from your brother-in-law that Caleb Grant hasn’t married, and nobody has seen the mother of this little girl. She suddenly appeared out of nowhere, with people guessing she might be a relative’s child or a child picked up from somewhere else. Nobody knows what the real story is."
Sheila Yardley continued to force a smile and didn’t respond, seeming distracted.
Catherine Yardley came back inside, so Shannon Quinn stopped discussing it. Unexpectedly, Catherine Yardley said, "Who was that little girl? She seems so familiar, looking just like Sheila when she was young."
Shannon Quinn replied, "Mom, you also think that? I also felt she looked a lot like Sheila."
Sheila Yardley merely said, "All kids look similar."
Seeing Sheila Yardley didn’t seem to acknowledge it, Shannon Quinn stopped probing further.
From Sheila Yardley’s reaction, Shannon Quinn already knew the answer but hadn’t figured out the whole story or why Sheila Yardley wouldn’t admit she’s Peach’s mother.
Moreover, she seemed a bit resistant to Caleb Grant. The rightful source is novel•fire.net
Even if they hadn’t interacted for years, she might have at least greeted Caleb Grant given his help in the past.
However, Sheila Yardley seemed unwilling to see Caleb Grant.
At the dinner table, Peach and Leo sat together, with Leo being like a big brother, helping his sister eat.
Peach pointed at what she wanted to eat, and Leo helped her with it, even though he wasn’t very skilled with chopsticks; he was attentive when caring for his sister.
This inevitably reminded Shannon Quinn of the child she never had. If it had been a baby sister, Leo would definitely be a good big brother.
During dinner, Sheila Yardley spoke little, appearing somewhat distracted.
Comparatively, Caleb Grant remained composed, chatting with the brothers as if nothing unusual happened.
Just looking at Caleb Grant, it would be difficult to discern any peculiarity.
After dinner, Susan Wilde was the first to propose leaving, needing to deliver food to Iris.
Julian Yardley, though not volunteering to send it himself, knew exactly what Iris liked when he packed her meal. He asked Susan Wilde to check on the situation and, if necessary, take Iris to the hospital.
Simon Rhodes drove Susan Wilde, leaving together.
Erin Bishop chatted with Shannon Quinn for a while about her own preparations for pregnancy and Shannon Quinn’s desire for a second child. The two women talked half the afternoon about this topic in the gazebo, bitten by mosquitoes until they had to stop, and Erin Bishop drove home.
