Chapter 284: Chapter 284
"Daddy, take me inside." The child seemed a bit worried, reluctant to let go at the entrance of the restroom.
But Caleb Grant, being a man, naturally couldn’t barge into the ladies’ room. He usually asked the staff or nearby women for help, while he waited at the door.
His steps stopped in front of Sheila Yardley, who was pressed tightly against the wall. Even though he was still more than a meter away from her, she raised an invisible line of defense, full of vigilance.
"Could I trouble you to take my daughter into the restroom?" he asked politely, his tone unfamiliar, but his gaze made Sheila want to escape.
The child looked up at her and immediately said, "Thank you, sister."
Sheila lowered her head to look at the child, took a deep breath, and reached out to hold Peach’s hand. She immediately turned her back and led Peach to the restroom, no longer looking at Caleb.
She didn’t speak at all; her mind was blank and her heart in chaos. She never expected to see the child here...
Just as they entered, they ran into Catherine Yardley coming out. Catherine looked puzzled for a moment and asked, "Whose child is this?"
"...Not someone I know; he couldn’t go into the ladies’ room and asked me to help." Thɪs chapter is updated by nοvelfire.net
Catherine understood and nodded. When she got outside, she saw Caleb Grant standing at the door and greeted him with a smile, "Is she your daughter?"
Caleb nodded but didn’t say much.
Peach went into the restroom, and when Sheila was about to close the door, Peach hurriedly said, "Sister, don’t go away."
Sheila paused and only slightly closed the restroom door. There were countless words in her heart, but they were all stuck in her throat.
Once Peach had tidied her dress and came out, she let go of Sheila’s hand and ran to Caleb’s side upon seeing him at the door.
Sheila followed a bit later. He thanked her and then left with Peach.
Sheila and Catherine trailed behind, and as she watched the well-behaved Peach, long-suppressed emotions seemed to surge in her heart all at once.
She resented Caleb Grant, but she couldn’t take it out on his child.
Over the years, she had never brought up these events to anyone, nor had she ever tried to find out about the child, or secretly visit her.
She had tried her best to forget that nightmare past, trying to erase that period from her life.
But when she saw the child, the resolve she had always held onto began to waver.
At the restaurant, everyone found their seats, and Sheila started looking around for the child. However, there were too many people, and even if she found where the child was, her view was always obstructed by passersby.
"Who are you looking for?" Julian Yardley asked her.
Sheila snapped back to reality, gave a dry laugh, and said, "I was wondering why Sis hasn’t come out yet."
"Don’t you women always take forever to change clothes?"
Soon Shannon Quinn came down the stairs wearing a red qipao. The bright red made her skin look even fairer, and the slits in the dress revealed glimpses of her slender legs as she moved.
Shannon, being pregnant, naturally wasn’t drinking. As a bridesmaid, Iris Wilde hadn’t touched alcohol, so when it came to toasting, the two women used water instead of wine, leaving the drinking to Landon Sutton and Ronan Rhodes.
One table after another, and an entire bottle of wine was already gone.
However, both had pretty good tolerance, and this amount of wine wasn’t nearly enough to get them drunk.
At the dining table, Susan Wilde, Shawn Rhodes, and Simon Rhodes were seated at the same table with some peers from the Rhodes Family, all in their twenties or early thirties, chatting about work, a conversation Susan couldn’t join.
She stood up intending to go squeeze in at Erin Bishop’s girlfriends’ table.
As soon as she got up, Shawn asked her, "Where are you going?"
While moving the chair behind her, Susan said, "Looking for my friends."
Susan didn’t reply, took her bowl and chopsticks, and walked over to Erin’s table. Shawn’s gaze followed her until he saw it was an all-girls table, then he relaxed and looked away.
"You’ve been married for a while now. Looks like you’re getting along well," Simon suddenly remarked.
Shawn didn’t seem to expect that he would drag the topic from work to personal matters, but once he realized, he laughed and said to Simon, "Thanks for your concern, Uncle."
"How’s Susan’s hand from that burn last time?"
Shawn paused, seemingly having forgotten about it, and only recalled after Simon brought it up. He then answered, "It’s just a surface wound; it’s long healed. Thank you, Uncle, for your concern, taking the time to worry about Susan despite your busy schedule."
Simon merely chuckled and turned his head to continue talking about work with the man sitting beside him.
The wedding was grand, but indeed exhausting.
One by one, they sent off all the guests by past nine in the evening.
Since Shannon was pregnant, aside from wearing high heels during the wedding ceremony, she wore flats the rest of the time, but by the end of the day, her feet were too tired to stand.
As soon as they got home, she collapsed onto the bed, staring at the ceiling and mumbling, "I swear I’ll never get married again in this life."
Landon removed his suit jacket and chuckled, saying, "You’ll have no more chances even if you wanted to."
"It’s really too exhausting; my face feels frozen from smiling."
"Get up, take a bath, and rest quickly."
"You go first; I need a break."
Landon searched for clothes in the wardrobe while saying, "Let’s take a shower together."
Shannon wasn’t shy, but looked at him and said, "I don’t mind; just not sure if you can handle it."
In the early stages of pregnancy, he really couldn’t do much about her, dooming the wedding night to be incomplete.
On the wedding night, they intended to leave the bridal room for Landon and Shannon.
Catherine stayed with Leo and Sheila at her place because it only had two beds, and Julian took Iris to a hotel.
Because Susan hadn’t told Iris about her marriage, it was inconvenient for Iris to stay with her at home.
Today at the wedding, Iris was busy with her bridesmaid duties and hadn’t noticed Susan and Shawn walking closely together.
"Two double rooms, preferably adjacent," Julian handed over his ID to the hotel receptionist, and then extended his hand to Iris, "ID card."
Iris rummaged through her bag for a while until she found her ID card, then spoke to the receptionist, "Do you have twin rooms, sister?"
The receptionist smiled and replied, "Yes, we do."
Julian frowned, not yet having a chance to question her, when she told the receptionist, "In that case, we’ll take a twin room."
After speaking, Iris looked at Julian with a pitiful expression and said, "I’m scared of staying alone."
Considering she’d been freeloading at his place numerous times, a twin room it would be.
The receptionist handed them their ID cards and room key cards, motioning towards the direction of the elevator and smiling, "Take the elevator to the lounge; it’s on the left."
