Chapter 77: Chapter 77

Chapter 77

The next day, I went to the company and hardly paid any attention to what had happened last night; it felt like a dream, fading quickly. As I entered the employees' break room, I noticed everyone gathered and engaged in a serious discussion. Curiosity got the better of me, so I asked, "What's going on? Everyone seems very solemn. Can someone fill me in?"

The employees seemed a bit hesitant to speak when they saw me, but a female colleague finally spoke up, "The thing is... David... he..."

"David? What happened to him? Is he coming in late?" I asked, and it suddenly reminded me of what had transpired last night at that restaurant.

Another colleague hurriedly closed the door and motioned for me to join them at the table, then began, "This morning, we found out that David, our new colleague, is actually the youngest son of Mr. Cruz, the CEO of ACB Company. But what's remarkable is that all of a sudden, there's news that ACB Company has gone bankrupt. How could a company that was doing so well and expanding go bankrupt so quickly?"

"Indeed, I can't understand it either. All the news outlets are reporting this, so it can't be fake. David has also resigned; he won't be working with us anymore. Flora, did he say anything to you?"

Still reminiscing about what had happened yesterday, I chuckled and replied, "No, he didn't say anything to me. I only found out today that he resigned."

People began discussing this matter, and at this point, I felt drained. Last night, I had thought that Enzo was merely bluffing, but it turns out he wasn't bluffing; he had actually caused the bankruptcy of David's father's company with just a few words.

"I... I have some work to attend to," I hastily excused myself and returned to my office, my mind in turmoil. I went online to search for information about David's father's company, ACB. Everything I found indicated that ACB Company had indeed gone bankrupt. The reason behind the bankruptcy was clear – Mr. Cruz had been involved in tax evasion, corruption, and various other crimes, all of which were well-documented.

I knew that these revelations were meant to divert attention from the truth and confuse those who didn't understand what was really happening. I couldn't help but wonder what kind of man I was dealing with. Enzo wielded not just immense power but also a terrifying one; a single word from him had brought a company to its knees overnight. It was just that... Enzo had never displayed these traits in front of me, making me believe he was simply wealthy.

I suddenly remembered Ron and the things he had said before he left. If what Ron had claimed was true, then Enzo might have been behind Rika's murder case and the troubles with Ron's family and Ron's mother's company.

My mind was in turmoil over this matter. The afternoon was relatively quiet, so I left work early to rest and contemplate everything. But as soon as I arrived home, I found David standing at my doorstep, looking utterly pitiful and battered, his face bruised.

When David saw me, he fell to his knees before me, trembling, and pleaded for forgiveness.

"I beg you, I was wrong. I had no idea you were his wife; if I had known, I would never have approached you. Please forgive me. My father will kill me, I'll be ruined." David pleaded frantically, and I was swept up in his panic.

After David had calmed down, I finally managed to speak. "So... your father's company really went bankrupt? Is that the truth?"

"Yes, it's true... please, talk to your husband, ask him to spare my father's company, and spare me as well," David said, his voice trembling. I could see from his battered appearance how angry his father had become; his eyes were barely able to open.

I sighed, unable to believe how far things had escalated. "Enzo is my ex-husband, but..." I didn't know what to say to him now. Why was I the one responsible for this situation?

But looking at David's pitiful state, I realized that he was just a young, impulsive, and immature person. His punishment felt like a death sentence.

David continued to beg me, even getting down on his knees, which shocked me into helping him up. I didn't want to get involved with Enzo and this situation at all, even if it wasn't me with David last night, but someone else. The events of this morning might have still unfolded as David had been disrespectful to Enzo earlier.

"I understand, but first, please stand up. Don't kneel. You're making it difficult for me," I said, trying to help him up, but he pushed me away, tears in his eyes.

"I won't stand up! You have to promise to help me before I do. I'm in real trouble here. I had no idea he was Enzo Robert. If only I had known sooner... things wouldn't be like this. Please, have some pity on me; I used to be your subordinate," David pleaded through his tears. "If you had just told me you were his wife from the beginning, I would never have approached you. Why didn't you say you were his wife?"

And now, David was shifting all the blame onto me? I couldn't be sure of anything, but the current situation left me with no choice, so I reluctantly agreed. Though I agreed to help David, I didn't know how to help him.

Only after receiving my promise did David finally stand up and leave the room, leaving me lost in my thoughts once again.

I had thought for a long time, a very long time, before coming to a decision. It wasn't just about David and his father's company; I wanted to know more about many other things.

"Oh Mom, this isn't the way back home... are you planning to..." Rollo looked out of the car window and then turned to ask me, his face filled with excitement as if he were about to get candy. But my mood was extremely gloomy, never expecting that I would come here voluntarily for something I hadn't done.

Standing in front of the familiar mansion gate, I had no desire to enter. However, as soon as I parked the car in front of the grand gate, it automatically opened, as if it knew I was coming. I drove into the compound, and Rollo eagerly opened the car door and ran inside. I didn't stop him because he had been here many times before.

The butler and all the maids stood in two rows, bowing their heads in greeting. I couldn't get used to this overly respectful greeting. I approached one of the maids and asked, "Where is Enzo now?"

Before the maid could respond, I heard the voice of the man himself. He smiled as he approached me. "I'm here."

Seeing Enzo's smile made me uncomfortable as if he were mocking me. But I didn't have much time to judge his appearance. "I want to talk to you," I said coldly.

Enzo looked at me affectionately and smiled warmly. "You didn't want to ask about Min first? Does that mean what you want to discuss is more important than our daughter?"

I gave him a warning look. "Min hasn't come back from school yet; I'll talk to her later." Even though I don't live with Min, I have her school schedule firmly in my hands. After finishing school, she has tutoring at the school, so she might not be home until late.

Enzo chuckled. "You still understand Min very well. She'll be happy about this."

Nothing has changed here since I left. Even though I don't live here, there is no sign of any other woman... just like Enzo's lover, for example.

"Before we talk, why don't you have some cookies and tea?" Enzo extended his hand towards me, but I remained cautious, looking at him and then at the tea in front of me.

Enzo noticed my skeptical gaze and laughed. "There's no need to be so wary. Do you think I'd poison your tea?"

"Of course, how do I know if death is coming for me tonight or not?" I replied calmly and coldly, causing Enzo's smile to freeze, and he awkwardly looked at me.

"Please, don't think that way," Enzo said softly, but I heard it clearly; it sounded like a plea.

"Tell me, is it true that the bankruptcy of David's ACB company was your doing? Why did you do that, just because of last night?" I asked directly.

Enzo relaxed and took a sip of tea. When he heard my question, he just chuckled lightly and said, "Yes, I already mentioned it last night, and you were there listening, weren't you? This matter has nothing to do with you, why are you so curious?"

"I want to know why you did it. David's actions and words were disrespectful to you, but they shouldn't warrant such severe punishment," I said, lowering my voice as I had promised David.

Enzo immediately set his teacup down and stared at me directly, making me shiver. He said, "You came here willingly to help another man? If that guy had only been disrespectful to me, things wouldn't be as bad, because he dared to approach my woman, so that is the price he pays."

"Because of me? I'm not your woman, and last night was just a meal with colleagues. Enzo, you can't be so irrational," I said.

I genuinely couldn't comprehend Enzo's thoughts. Since returning to the country, he has constantly bothered me and entangled me again and again. Initially, he only aimed at me and our child, but now those around me were getting involved too. Thinking of this, I remembered what Ron had said, and I stared at him, suddenly trembling all over, with cold sweat dripping from my hands.

Enzo didn't seem to notice my unusual reaction, and I tried to calm myself down. But Ron's words kept haunting me, and I genuinely wanted to know everything, but my courage was not big enough. I was afraid that if I found out everything Enzo had done, he might... eliminate me to silence me.

"So... so... is Rika's murder case... her death... also your doing?" In my fear, I accidentally blurted out the question.
