Chapter 44: Chapter 44

“Constance!" Jocelyn screamed in horror. Her friend must be crazy, is she trying to take the bullet?

The high pitch of Jocelyn's voice alerted a lot of people in the room and it frightened the gunman as he withdrew his gun pointing towards Jace but Constance didn't stop running since she thought the gun was still pointed at Jace.

“Jace!" She screamed and pushed her husband out of the way but unfortunately fell with him as they rolled off the floor.

“Jace! Jace! Are you okay?" She asked, shaking at the process as she checked her husband. She's on top of him giving her access to check her husband very well.

“You are fine, you are fine," she whimpers and hugs him. Releasing the tears she tried to sniff back but couldn't. Her heart is palpitating and her body shocking as she hugs Jace. She has never felt this kind of fear in her life…. The fear of losing her husband was so intense.

“Constance," Jace calls softly. He sounds confused too. Maybe not only him but everyone around. No one seems to understand why Constance acted this way except Darren and Jocelyn who saw what Constance saw.

Constance didn't move even though Jace was trying to make her move, he wants to understand what made her act this way and he can't do it if she's hugging him like this. Constance didn't move, rather she was hugging Jace so tight, having unnecessarily fear that she might lose him if she let go of him. Jace hugged her back, rubbing his palm smoothly on her back to calm her shaking body.

The eyes of the guests are already stuck on them. They are all wondering who the girl on top of Jace is. It was a sigh of relief that the guests that came here today are all matured both in their looks and in their brains. If not, they will do the work of the paparazzi that are not here today.

No one knows that Jace is married so they are interested to know who the girl that jumps on him is. Could she be all these girls that can do anything to get Jace's attention?

“Constance," Jace mumbled. She's shaking profusely and it got him worried.

Finally, Constance was able to raise her head. Her brown eyes stare deeply into Jace's black eyes. Seeing that nothing happened to her husband, she's greatly relieved.

“Constance, what was the matter?" Jace asked.

“I… I… I saw a man, trying to shoot you," she replied with her shaky voice. It seems that she's not yet recovered from the trauma of seeing her husband nearly shot to death.

“Shoot me? Where did you see the man?" Jace didn't doubt her, he just wanted to understand her words.

“Over there." Constance looked towards the angle she saw the man but the man was no longer there. “I … saw the man…"

“Is okay, he might have run away. Don't panic, he's no longer here. He won't shoot me okay." Jace hugs her shaking body. He believes her, she just can't pull up a drama if she doesn't see anything. Just like he said, the man must have run away since Constance caused alarm with her action.

Something was able to register in Jace's mind. Constance ran towards him, the moment she saw the gunman trying to shoot him. She was ready to take a bullet for him.

This girl is ready to take a bullet for him. Jace was speechless.

Luckily the party is coming to an end. Jace told his grandfather to dismiss his guests. He ordered the guards to look for the gunman.

Jocelyn and Darren also had to leave. They didn't forget to hug their friend and promise to call her later. They saw how shocked she was.

Jace said it's a family matter and needed to be discussed within his family's members.

The moment everyone was gone and all the family members waiting behind to understand what was going on, Jace descended on Kevin who was about to sneak out from the living room and didn't see the attack from Jace coming.

Before he could process what was going on, Jace had already given him several punches on his face while pinning him down.

“Jace! What is wrong with you? What are you doing? Why are you hitting Kevin?!" Melinda, Kevin's mother and Mr. Williams kept yelling at him to stop but he gave no heed to their yell.

Others are just staring at the scene with no emotion. To them, whatever Jace does to Kevin is none of their business.

“Jace! Stop it! What's the meaning of this!" Mr. Williams screams at Jace and holds his fist which is in mid air and about to land on Kevin's face.

He has succeeded in breaking Kevin's nose, lips turning his face into a mess.

“That's enough!" Mr. Williams hollers.

Fortunately, Jace was able to let go of Kevin. He stood up pacing to and fro in anger.

Melinda and Hailey, Kevin's mother, rush to him in tears. They help him to sit up, his face is all broken and he's gasping for air.

“How could you do this to my son Jace!" Hailey cried. She usually doesn't speak to Jace with an angry tone as she actually fears this young man but right now she doesn't care, he has crossed the limit by trying to punch her son to death.

“Jace, what was the meaning of that? Why are you hitting Kevin!" Mr. Williams snapped. He's yet to understand why Jace asked him to send his guests home.

He thought that they were going to talk about why Constance acted the way she did a while ago but instead of that, Jace started hitting Kevin.

Jace ignored them and tried to walk away but Mr. Williams' voice stopped him on his track.

“Don't leave Jace. Answer my question first." Mr. Williams demanded with a tone of authority.

“He knows what he did. Why will I say it with my mouth!" Jace snapped.

“I know nothing!" Kevin retorted and winced in pain.

“Take it easy Kevin," his mother said out of concern.

“Don't act as if you don't know that the assassin Constance saw was sent by you."

“Assassin? What do you mean?"

“Constance saw a gunman trying to shoot me." Jace replied nonchalantly.

“Shoot you?!" Mr. Williams was shocked.

Hannah, who held Constance close to herself, checked her out. Constance ran towards Jace, does that mean she wanted to take the bullet. Is she crazy? Hannah was relieved that nothing happened to Constance.

Ryan, who has had enough with the drama, turns his back and walks away.

“Kevin, is Jace telling the truth?" Mr. Williams asked in a serious tone.

“Of course not, he's just accusing me."

Jace got infuriated with his reply. He hates it when someone tries to deny what they did. He wanted to go over to him and give him another punch but Mr. Williams stood in his way.

“My son is telling the truth. He cannot do such a thing." Kevin's mother retaliated, making Jace more furious.

“Grandfather leave my way!" He snarled but Mr. Williams didn't flinch. Only he can deal with an angry Jace.

“Are you acting this way because you nearly died or your wife nearly died!" Kevin yowled. “You are a hypocrite, you promised Natasha that you will never fall for any other woman but it seems you have broken the promise. You are the one that killed Natasha, if she had been with me, she wouldn't have died and now you have broken your promise!"

Jace clenched his fist in so much anger. His face turned red due to rage.

“You bastard!" He gritted and forcefully left his father's grip and went straight to Kevin as he hit him once again. At the third hitting, his grandfather successfully held his fist and stopped him.

He glares at the laughing Kevin who seems satisfied despite the pains inflicted on him. Kevin knows how much a word like that will hurt Jace and he didn't waste any time in throwing it at him.

Jace yanks his fist from his grandfather's grip and storms away.

Kevin was laughing Victoriously, he has ignited something in Jace and it won't be easily extinguished.

“Kevin!" Melinda yells, making both Kevin and his mother flinch a bit.

“You haven't forgotten Natasha, have you!"

“Calm down baby, I just said that so it will hurt Jace."

“Suit yourself!" Melinda snapped and walked away ignoring Kevin's call.

Natasha is the same woman he fought with Jace in the past. Though Natasha only loves Jace, Kevin wouldn't let it be. Natasha was Melinda's best friend. Melinda has been in love with Kevin and always hates it when he and Jace fights for Natasha. It hurts her that Kevin didn't notice her until Natasha's death.

Though the most affected after Natasha's death is Jace but that doesn't mean that Kevin wasn't affected too.

And what he said to Jace means that Natasha still lives in his heart even though she's dead. He still believes that if Natasha had chosen him, she would be alive. That means that if Natasha had chosen him and didn't die then he wouldn't end up marrying her. The thought of this makes Melinda boil in anger.

..

Constance was looking for Jace, luckily she found him at the pool side. She held a first-aid kit. She noticed that he hurt his fist while hitting Kevin.

Constance doesn't want to hear more about Natasha. She knows who she is. She must be the same woman her grandfather said Jace was in love with but she later died. Jace must have loved Natasha so much. He got infuriated when Kevin said that Natasha died because of him.

“Let me treat your wound," Constance gently said and tried taking Jace's hand but he yanked it away.

“What! What do you think of yourself? Do you think I've accepted you as my wife? What right do you have to treat my wound? You are no not my wife, I will never love you!" Jace yells and walks away.

“You are not my wife, I will never love you!" The word keeps repeating in Constance's head. Her cheeks have already wet with tears.
