Chapter 20: Chapter 20
Kelly rushed out to get to work in time. She got lost in her thoughts, reminiscing about her life and her past that she neglected a very common thing she would do on her daily routines: taking her meds after her morning meals. Kate did not doubt why her mom was taking them because they were stored in a bottle with a vitamin label. But the mom warned Kate never to take from it as it doesn't suit her age. And Kate did not ask any more questions. It was not questionable if her mom would take vitamins to bother asking so much.
Thinking she still had time in her hands earlier, Kelly leisurely ate her breakfast and sipped on her herbal tea as she looked back on things about her life journey.
When she noticed she was running out of time and did not have much left to get to work without being late, she hurried on her way to her car. Yet, as a responsible driver, she was careful and checked her ways for safety.
But as she was about to get out of their driveway, a speeding car hit the right side corner of her front bumper. The other vehicle suddenly collided with hers at a massive velocity. Too strong that her car turned around from its spot.
"Bang!!! Smash!!!
A loud crashing sound shook everyone around.
Cars were honking.
"Oh my god!" Screams of fear squealed out from different directions.
Everything happened too fast.
Kelly was beyond shocked. She felt all her senses went numb. She felt like floating in limbo. She was consciously aware of what was happening, but her body was irresponsive.
Kelly's car airbags were excellent as her vehicle was not outdated given by her late husband, but she hit her head too hard to the side of her seat, and she lost consciousness before the airbags inflated.
It was a busy hour for motorists. Many people saw what happened and quickly called for the medics while others ran to check on Kelly when her car took its halt.
The sight of her car was horrible to see. Anyone would fear the person inside it would have been badly injured, judging by the wreckage visible from spectators' eyes.
"Lady, lady! Stay with us. I'm a doctor. The ambulance is on the way," a man jumped out of his car when he saw what happened. When he got closer, he noticed Kelly was wearing a scrub suit under her trench coat. He tried to keep talking to the patient.
"You're wearing a scrub suit. Are you a doctor? A nurse?"
The man did not stop asking questions that could awaken the on and off consciousness of the patient.
"Do you have a child? A son? Or a daughter?"
He noticed a faint response from the lady. The doctor kept asking. It was a way to keep the patient's mind active and not drift off because with how tragic her condition is right now, this lady may not wake up again if she loses grip on her sentience.
The ambulance quickly came. The city medical hospital was not far from the spot of the accident, and although it was considered rush hour, motorists were assisted promptly in creating a way for the help to get through.
The other car Kelly collided with did not stop even when they knew they hit a car. It was like the car had lost its brakes and could not stop, not even slowing down. It even hit other vehicles along its way, but it did not stop. No one had noticed it when Kelly's car violently turned around like a top half twirled. When Kelly's car took a halt, the other car was nowhere to be seen already.
Concerned citizens helped with the traffic flow while others that could not move their vehicle tried to help quicken the procedure to get the victim helped and brought to the hospital.
The ambulance came, and with expertise, everyone moved fast. Soon, Kelly was brought to the city hospital. The doctor that assisted on the spot drove right behind the ambulance, and as he also worked for the city medical hospital, he helped the medics until the patient was properly attended to. They noticed the patient was wearing a scrub suit, but with her bleeding and swollen face, no one could recognize that she was Kelly Eudovic, their colleague in this medical facility.
"Call her family. We need their signature before we can proceed, and tell them it's urgent," the doctor who assisted Kelly on site was a resident doctor and took her case. He knew what had happened. He has an idea of what to do with her without asking so many questions. He cannot deny that he feels slightly familiar with this lady, although he could not confirm or give it so much thought. He just felt he needed to do his best to keep this lady alive, for whatever reason.
A nurse quickly checked on Kelly's belongings. And when she saw her identifications, the nurse could not help a suppressed whimper escaped her muffled mouth.
"Oh my god! She's Kelly, Kelly Eudovic," the lady nurse cried.
"What?! I just thought she looked familiar. I didn't think she would be one of ours," the doctor sadly reacted. "Call her family, especially her daughter. She needs to know about her mom's case. This might also be a chance to get that tumor out of her since she had her head injured badly," the doctor added.
He is Alfred Dion, Aldin's dad. A resident doctor at the City Medical Hospital. He also happens to be a neurosurgeon who handles Kelly's case. He had been convincing Kelly to get that tumor out as early as possible to get the better chances of winning over it, but he also knew the possibilities of its failure, which would fasten the pace of Kelly's death coming forward.
Being medical practitioners, they aware of many things. They cannot avoid knowing many possibilities in every case. They are not immune to fear and worry about the possible results and outcomes of every medical test and procedure. Death is inevitable, but when you think about the loved ones you are to leave behind, one would always wish to live longer. It may be the greed to enjoy more of earthly pleasures, but some reasons are due to worries about their young ones who won't have anyone else to be with when they leave this temporary life on earth.
As a doctor who believes in the power of knowledge and medicine, Alfred wanted to gamble if he was in Kelly's shoes. But since he is not the one with a very young daughter to be left behind when things turn ugly, he cannot insist his opinion to be a perfect choice. He understood Kelly's fears as a parent, so he just made sure to assist Kelly with everything she needed to get through the pain and her occasional fainting.
But what happened today might be a good chance, a door of hope to end Kelly's medical conditions, or, at least, a temporary solution of slowing down the spread of the tumor cells and be able to stay with her daughter for a few more years.
With positive thoughts that Kelly's family would not disagree with signing the papers to proceed with the necessary surgery, the nurses prepared everything in the operating room. With doubled tension as their patient is one of their own, many of the staff could not keep from feeling emotional. Silent prayers filled their hearts, and positive words were exchanged to one another as they moved with urgency and accuracy.
Kelly has always been a good and kind colleague to everyone. She is an aloof beauty but always with a gentle smile. No matter how stressful their days and duties become, Kelly was never seen with an ugly face. Her nature shows a deep personality, a person who has been to a lot of life's adversaries in life and has learned how to overcome them. She is easy to be liked and respect because she is never selfish with anything. She helps and guides her co-nurses, newbies, and veterans alike. She is one of a kind.
As for Kelly, she just wanted to live life with peace. She has had a lot of struggles, and she suffered from them in many horrible ways. Some even remained and are still taunting her, but she did not want to create the same problem with the people around her. She knows well how it felt to be enslaved of hate and anger, and she had gone through hell to deal with them.
One thing she is proud she learned from all of her life experiences is forgiveness. She had to forgive not for the ones who offended her but for her very own peace. And peace within herself that radiates and creates a good environment. She can overlook on things with a broadened mind that though she cannot control others' thoughts, words and actions, she can always choose her ways on how to respond.
