Chapter 62: Chapter 62

*Third person*

"What happened to her?" William asks her as he places his mother's head against his chest.

"She...She was probably reminded about what she doesn't want to remember." Kemi answers sitting beside him.

"That was it? How exactly did it happen? And why?" William presses further.

He knows very well that if his mother is to recall anything, it would not weigh her down like this, unless she's forced.

"Well..."Kemi starts to say.

"What happened to her? What triggered it? Tell me already!"He yells at her.

She finches in shock and bit her lower lips. "Um...The underboss came here. He was the one who made her memory triggered." She explains as she fidgets with her fingers.

"Lexis came here? He did this?" He asks in an angry voice while looking at Kemi who keeps fidgeting with her fingers not meeting his eyes.

She nods, "Yes. He kept saying 'Angie' and I think that's what triggered her memory." She slowly raises her head up to look at him. "He kept calling her by that name. Is there a reason?" She asks.

William clenches his fist as his eyes becomes red from the rage he is feeling.

"That bastard." He curses out before turning to his mother.

"Mom, are you okay?" He asks stroking his mother's hair.

Patricia stops breathing hard and she slowly nods her head. "I didn't kill anyone." She mutters in a trembling voice.

William nods in agreement as he kisses her forehead. "That's right. Don't think about anything. Don't let anything get to your head, you didn't kill anyone, it's fine." He pulls her back slightly and pulls up her chin so she can look straight into his eyes.

"It's fine, it's me, William, your son and I'm telling you that nothing happened, okay?"

Patricia looks at him and tears stream down her cheeks. She slowly reaches up to cup his face with her palms. "My son.." She says softly.

William nods, "Yes mom. It's me."

She bit her lower lips as the tears flows the more. "Are you better now? You were sick right?"

He smiles at her, "Yes mom. You remember?"

She nods, "Yes, I...I do."

"You remember everything?" William asks and Kemi turns to him. She could sense the anxiety in his voice but also hope. She can't tell if he's happy that she remembers or not. Why does he sound scared like he doesn't want her to recall everything? She does not want to pry but she can't help wondering why the consigliere seems anxious.

Patricia shakes her head slowly. "No and I might forget later again but for now that I remember, stay with me son. Don't leave yet." She says desperately as she clutches to him rightly.

William nods and caresses her face. "Of course, mom. I will stay here and won't leave, okay?"

Patricia nods and rests her head against his chest while he pats her head.

Kemi stands up from the bed. "I will go get her water."

William didn't reply as he solely focuses on his mom.

Some minutes later, Patricia falls asleep and William places her on the bed, covering her with a blanket. Kemi is standing close to the wall silently watching him without saying anything.

She guesses he's definitely going over to the underboss's mansion once he leaves here. She really doesn't understand what the underboss would gain from hurting the consigliere's mom. Is it just to provoke him? Is that not childish? She feels something bad must have happened to Patricia and can't help but be curious.

"Why are you standing there?"

His voice startles her from her thought and she turns to him quickly. He's already walking over to her.

"Huh?" That's the only thing that comes out of her mouth.

He continues to walk over to her. "You're standing too far. I want to hug you, l have missed you." He says in a calm tone and she could see him grinning. When he reaches where she is standing, he wraps his hands around her waist and pulls her to his chest.

Her eyes grow wide at his sudden move and she struggles to pull away.

"Won't you give me a kiss? I haven't seen you in a week, you know." He pouts as he holds her tightly.

"What are you doing? What if someone walks in here and meet us like this?" She panics as she tries to push him away.

He smiles,"Who cares? I don't care." He shrugs.

She sighs and stops struggling. "You could have called then." She pouts as well.

"You didn't call me either." He points out.

"But..." She pauses as she realizes that he's right. She really didn't call either.

"Well, is that why you didn't even bother to text then?" She asks still pouting.

He grins, "Aw, you're so cute right now. I'm sorry, okay?"

She rolls her eyes and starts pulling away. She can't believe they are both bickering like children.

"It won't be good if anyone comes in here." She says.

"What? You are ashamed to be seen with me?"

She looks at him with a look like 'Is this man serious? Has he seen himself in the mirror?'

"Of...Of course not. It's not that, you know why."

He shakes his head innocently. "I don't know why, tell me ?"

"I don't know why either."

He pulls her closer against his chest and tucks her hair behind her ear gently.

"Why didn't you send me a text?" He asks her in a low voice. "I was expecting you to call or text. Well, I might not call it 'expecting' but 'hoping' "

She looks away from him. "Well..I um...I thought you would be busy, but...but you could have..." She pauses and sighs. "It dosen't matter anyway." She should stop talking before she would start sounding clingy.

"But I what?"

She didn't say anything but looks at him.

He leans closer and pecks her cheek softly. "I'm sorry, I was sorting out lots of things. I know it's no excuse but it won't happen again, hmm? I really missed you." He pouts his lips to her.

"Was it very important?"

He nods, "Yes. It was an errand from my father, couldn't afford to lose focus."

She nods, "I understand. I was just curious and...worried too."

He smiles at her. "You were worried about me?"

She looks away from him, "Well, you...You left when you only newly recovered. It's not too good to move around when you were sick. And also if..."

"So you did miss me." He smiles. "I do too. I miss you."

She bits her lower lips, staring at him but didn't say anything. Yeah, he's right. She missed him and she was worried something had happened to him.

He smiles, "I'm sorry I yelled at you earlier. I got scared and...and I panicked." He says as his eyebrows become lower, pulling closer together as he stares at her waiting for her to say something.

"I get it, there's no need to apologize. How was it?"

He blinks at her wondering what she's asking about. "How was what?"

"Your errand? The one you ran for your father?"

"Oh..." He slowly trails his fingers over her ear. "It was...It was fine." He answers shortly.

She knows there's something more but she didn't ask any further questions and just nods, looking down.

"I have to go now, there's something I need to take care of." He says.

She lifts her head up at once to look at him. "Oh, okay." She answers shortly. That is obviously not what she wants to say. She wants to ask where he was going all of a sudden and why? Is he going to meet the underboss? Or is he going to run another errand?

"I will text you, no, I will call you." He says before leaning to kiss her softly on the lips.

"Okay." She answers curtly as

"I want to take you somewhere later." He smiles at her. " It would be fun." He adds with a smile.

"Alright."

He kisses her once more on the cheeks before walking out of the room.

She heaves a sigh as she watches him closes the door after him. She sits down on the chair close to the table and bit her lower lips. As she fidgets with her fingers, Mike's words flows to her head.

["Don't even think of falling for the consigliere. I understand that he is good looking and all but you will get in trouble."]

She sighs again and can recall that Mike looked very serious when he was saying it that day. Was it because he's the consigliere and people fears him too?

"What am I even doing? Is this right thing?" She runs her hands over her face and just when she's about to stand up, she hears low groans. She turns her head to the direction of the bed and sees Patricia sitting up. She quickly walks over to her and sits beside her on the bed.

"Mrs.Patricia, are you feeling okay now?"

Patricia stares at her, blinking her lashes without saying anything. Kemi stares at her wondering if she has forgotten again.

"Do you remember me? It's Kemi."

Patricia stares at her, "Who are you?"

Kemi quickly stands up and goes over to bring her notepad where Patricia jots things.

She hands it over to her,"Here you go Mrs. Patricia. This is your notepad, you might recall a few things if you read through."

Patricia reaches out and collects the notepad from her. She opens it and starts going through it.

"I'm your caretaker. Are you feeling better? Do you feel headache?"

She shakes her head, "No, I'm fine."

"You must be hungry, I will go and get you something to eat."

*Lexis's House.*

"The consigliere is here, underboss." Robert informs Lexis who is busy typing on his laptop, sitting in his office room.

Lexis raises his head up from the laptop to look at him. "William?"

Robert nods in affirmation.

Lexis grins and stands up from the chair. "I was expecting him to come earlier though."

Just as he walks over to the door, it swings open revealing an angry William giving him a death glare.

"Oh, I was about coming to you." Lexis says with a smile before gesturing for Robert to leave. Robert obeys and quickly exits the room, shutting the door behind him.

William storms over to him in rage.

"What the f**k do you want with my mom, Lexis? Do l have to blow your head off before you leave her alone?" He yells out in anger as he glares at him.

Lexis scoffs and slowly walk over to the table before leaning against it.

He turns to William, "Is that why you're here?To yell? I was expecting you to punch or blow off my head by now. " He smirks before adding on, "She needs to be reminded everytime so she would recover quickly." He moves away from the table and starts walking over to William who is standing in the middle of the room.

"Why are you protecting her so bad, big brother? You can't help her, no matter what you do. You know very well that evil people will have to pay for their deeds and your mother is no exception."

William scoffs, "Oh really? Evil people? So you are aware that you will pay for all the evil deeds that you have done then."

Lexis gives him a wicked smile. "I won't call it 'evil deeds', I would rather say 'Helping the helpless.' "

William scoffs at his brother's words.

Lexis continues, "All I have done was do the needful. l don't kill or hurt people for stupid reasons." He shrugs.

William swallows as he clenches his fist in anger. He is using every thing in him to stop himself from actually blowing his head off.The fact that he's smiling broadly about the whole thing, irks him the more.

"I'm not going to warn you again Lexis. Stay away from my mom." He says between his teeth.

"I was only helping your mother, brother. You should thank me instead." Lexis moves around the table and takes up the bottle of wine that's close to his laptop before pouring a portion into a glass.

"You care for a drink, brother?" Lexis asks with a wide grin on his face.

William strides over to him and bangs his fist against the table but Lexis only keeps drinking his wine without flinching.

"Trust me Lexis, you will not like this." He warns before turning around to leave the room.

"Why is that girl taking care of your mother? I thought she's here to pay for her father's debt? And if I'm correct, which of course l am; I am the one that her father owes."' Lexis says making William pause.

William turns around to him. "Have you forgotten that you sold her off to Alhaji Bawa? Did you forget that her father was your debtor when you did that?"

Lexis spreads out his hands as he walks over to him. "Well, father asked me to do that and I couldn't say no when she's nothing but a debtor." He shrugs. "I mean, it would look like she's useful to me and I didn't want to let her go. And she obviously was not useful to me nor important."

"Well then, since you have let her go. Mind your business and pretend that you didn't see her."

Lexis narrows his brows giving him a confused expression. "And why? She still owes me. And I still can't figure out why you brought her back from Alhaji Bawa? What would you tell father if he finds out?"

"Father doesn't care about things that are unrelated to the mafia business."

"Oh really? Then that means, he would be very much interested in something like this because, she's involved in the mafia business."

William's brows become lower as he stares at lexis not understanding what he means.

"And how is that?"

Lexis gives him a knowing look. "Are you asking me that? Have you forgotten that her father owes me remember? Her father owes an underboss of a mafia family, and that means they are involved in the business already, my business..." He shrugs before adding on. " Well, I could have probably killed him or dealt with him but you decided to play a hero and got the daughter involved." He walks closer to William. "What is your exact reason for bringing her back, brother? I know you're up to something, so don't even think of making up a story like, 'I like how she takes care of my mother' Or' J felt bad for her' " He places his hand over his shoulder. "I know you brother, you don't do things without a motive and trust me, I am going to find out what it is that you are up to. And I have a feeling that you have had a motive with this girl from the start." He smirks at him before moving backwards away from him.

William didn't say anything but simply looks away. He is not stupid so he knows that Lexis would be definitely not let it slide. How could he have been so stupid to not think Lexis will catch on. He is right. He has indeed never done anything without a motive and that was why he brought in Kemi in the first place; to use her against Lexis because he felt Lexis was interested in her, but now, he doesn't even know what he is doing anymore. If he doesn't deal with this properly, everything will fall apart and even their father will get involved which is something he should avoid.
