Lord of The Mysterious Realms Chapter 936
The four individuals, pursued by a tidal wave of mirror-like transformation, continued to sprint down the street. Jenkins's bone whistle for summoning his skeletal steed had been damaged during the Skull Sword incident, leaving him without a mount he could use in public. He had to rely on [Cat's Grace] to quicken his pace, only to discover, much to his surprise, that the three women were just as fast.
The group ran along the street until it ended, veering left at the five-way intersection in front of the stone pillars of the 'Nexus Expert Furniture Club.' After passing through Dilar Second Commercial Avenue, they turned onto Fifth Queen's Avenue. Just as Pops Antique Shop was about to come into view, the mirrored cataclysm finally ceased.
The first to notice the mirrors had stopped spreading was Chocolate, who was clinging to Jenkins's collar with his claws. The cat was perched facing backward, seemingly fascinated by the experience of being carried along at a run.
Though his steed, Jenkins, was a bit slow, the cat was still enjoying the ride. As soon as he noticed the mirrors had stopped spreading, he meowed insistently. Only then did Jenkins dare to look back, and what he saw was an overwhelming expanse of shimmering silver mirrors materializing in the mist.
While reflecting scenes from the Mirror World, the surfaces of these mirrors rippled like a churning sea. Upon closer inspection, a second layer could be seen beneath the rolling silver waves. This barely perceptible layer was pitch-black. Just as Jenkins tried to make out what lay within, a pair of enormous, vertical pupils abruptly appeared across the mirrored surfaces of every object behind them.
The mirrored physical surfaces weren't smooth; every imperfection had transformed into a textured angle. The colossal pupils were composed of a dense mosaic of these non-parallel silver facets. The emotionless eyes stared out from the mirror into the Mirror World. Within the pale yellow irises of the vertical pupils, a black line seemed to writhe. The pupils themselves were like bottomless abysses, and the moment Jenkins met their gaze, a sudden terror struck him like a hammer to the head.
The women caught in the eyes' gaze and Jenkins, who had looked directly at them, all collapsed onto the street at the same time. Fortunately, as the mirror transformation receded, the eyes slowly vanished as well.
Chocolate worriedly brushed the man's face with his tail, then watched as the all-encompassing mirrors disappeared, replaced once more by the surging mist.
The cat let out another worried cry before obediently curling up beside Jenkins's head.
Despite having looked directly at the eyes, Jenkins was the first to regain consciousness. Fighting back nausea and a throbbing headache, he carried the three women into a nearby shop. It was half an hour before the first of them, the huntress, finally woke up.
The plain, forgettable face she'd worn at the black market was indeed a disguise. The woman's real face wasn't beautiful, but her high-bridged nose gave it a distinctive character. She appeared to be the oldest of the group, likely over thirty but not yet forty.
While she helped care for Miss Capet and Miss Knight, they introduced themselves. The huntress's real name was Cecia Warfield, the liaison for the Church of War and Victory in Nolan City. She had seen Jenkins's black-and-white photograph in the newspaper, so she recognized his face and knew his name, but like most people, she had no idea he was a Scribe for the Church of Knowledge and Books.
"I would think my identity as a Scribe wouldn't be that hard to guess, would it?"
"No. Generally speaking, Enchanters affiliated with the churches don't make public appearances, let alone someone like you who is so..."
She searched for the right word.
"So prominent. It's unusual. Enchanters typically conceal all their identities, which is why you don't seem like one."
The word didn't feel entirely fitting.
"Besides, your past is quite ordinary. Even when the Church recruits Enchanters, they wouldn't choose a man in his twenties with no prior foundation."
The huntress explained, then noticed Jenkins deliberately adjusting his posture. She simply assumed it was an odd habit, unaware that he was trying to avoid being recognized.
What had just happened was easy enough to explain. The Mirror World, a strange realm that was difficult to enter and exit, was better suited for sealing away bizarre entities than the material world. It was common knowledge among most Enchanters that terrifying evils were sealed in its depths. Most likely, some unknown entity had used the mirror cataclysm to briefly project its eyes from the deeper reaches of the Mirror World to its surface, which was why the four of them had been struck down so powerfully.
"This is an extremely dangerous place," the huntress summarized. "Whether it's the creatures roaming the Mirror World or the natural disasters of this realm itself, either can bring about our utter destruction. But what's even more terrifying are the reflections of the material world. The reflections of intelligent beings here are what we must be most wary of."
Having offered her assessment, the huntress began trying to rouse their other two companions.
Jenkins's cat was the last of the group to wake up. Though he looked like he was just sleeping, Jenkins was still worried. Miss Capet, however, was quite envious that Jenkins had such an intelligent pet. According to her, the difficulty of raising an ordinary animal into a supernatural creature was immense. Even with a precious [Animal Intelligence Awakening Potion], the success rate was about the same as stepping out your door and running straight into a Cursed Item.
The four of them were all Enchanters from the Orthodox Churches, and they even knew one another. With no conflicting interests between them, they quickly reached an agreement after everyone had recovered. For the duration of their time in the Mirror World, they would form a small group and work together to find a way out.
Information on the Mirror World was incredibly scarce. The recent major discovery in Nolan was being called the greatest exploration of the Mirror World in this epoch. Therefore, the file folder Jenkins had brought with him became the key to their salvation. Nᴇw novel chapters are publɪshed on novel※fire.net
But opening it led to bitter disappointment: the folder contained nothing but a stack of blank paper. Since Miss Bevanna had given it to Jenkins directly, it was unlikely to be some kind of "book with invisible words" trick. There should have been text on the pages.
"Is the Mirror World rejecting information that's harmful to it?"
Miss Knight speculated. She had been pulled in shortly after parting ways with Jenkins in the Evergreen Forest, sucked into a shimmering pool of water. Her luck was just about as bad as Jenkins's had been.
"So, does that mean the Mirror World has developed some degree of self-awareness?"
Miss Capet, pressing a hand to her forehead, followed up with her own guess. Of everyone present, she was the only one who wasn't a temporary resident of the city. As such, aside from the fact that an entrance had appeared, she knew almost nothing about the Mirror World.
But all things considered, their current situation was quite troublesome. Jenkins hadn't brought the metal block that sealed his divinity with him. He had just been working at the antique shop, after all, and saw no need to carry it. Otherwise, with the power of his deified state, shattering the space and opening an exit would not have been difficult.
