Chapter 347: Chapter 347
Jenkins stood his ground, completely calm. His left hand was in his overcoat pocket, clutching the metal block, while his right hand raised the spear. Then, he too broke into a charge, rushing toward the man.
With a low grunt, the two men met head-on on the fifth step. In an instant, both the magic eyes and the spear struck their targets.
A thick pillar of energy blasted through Jenkins's right arm, and the strange abilities of the other magic eyes continued to take effect. But Jenkins had thrust the spear with precision, driving it straight into the heart of the Thousand-Eyed Priest.
B-02-3-8810, the Spear of Longevity at a Slight Cost. The genuine article could grant a creature a longer life, but at the cost of randomly destroying two of their four senses: taste, smell, hearing, or sight.
But this counterfeit, bought from the replica shop, only added a month of life when it struck the heart. Correspondingly, the price to be paid was also smaller—it only required the loss of either hearing or sight.
The spear struck the Thousand-Eyed Priest's heart true. He hadn't expected Jenkins to not only ignore his own attack but to press forward with an offense of his own.
"Did you think this would be enough to kill me?"
He was puzzled for a second before his rapid regeneration ability began to heal the wound in his heart. The counterfeit spear dissolved into a pile of ash. He let out a mocking laugh, but before the sound faded, he felt the surrounding light begin to dim.
A surge of joy went through him, and he instinctively reached to heal his wound, only to remember that his ability had just finished evolving.
He mentally touched the green point of light representing his ability. As his spirit flowed, a faint green mist seeped from his body. He directed the mist toward his injured limb, and amid a tingling sensation, flesh and blood began to regenerate at an incredible speed.
The Thousand-Eyed Priest was blind. Luck was on Jenkins's side this time. With a fifty-fifty chance, he had won the gamble on the first try and taken the man's sight. Captain Bincy had mentioned that all the magic eyes on the cultist possessed vision, providing him with an expanded field of view. At the same time, their sight was intrinsically linked to the eyes' abilities.
And so, a very interesting idea had occurred to Jenkins: if the eyes went blind, would their magical effects still function?
"Looks like I can save my divinity after all..."
At this thought, the corners of Jenkins's mouth turned up in a smile. Inside his overcoat pocket, unseen, the cat smiled too.
The bare-chested man finally realized it wasn't the light that was fading, but that something was wrong with his eyes.
He swung his hand, and slivers of silver light shot from his fingertips, finally striking his opponent. The priest let out a wail and fell to his knees. Deprived of their sight, the magic eyes on his body finally began to fail. At least a third of them melted into a thick liquid and dripped from his skin.
A few of them were Cursed Items, and their destruction caused a massive amount of spirit to pour into Jenkins's body from the void. After all the events of the day, after surviving five deadly thirty-firsts, after experiencing all manner of incredible things, he had finally advanced to Level 3.
The exhilarating sensation flowing through him made Jenkins want to laugh out loud, but for safety's sake, he held it back. The man opposite him was still alive.
Perhaps due to years of carrying so many deadly magic eyes, the Thousand-Eyed Priest's mind was incredibly resilient. He didn't collapse as expected. Instead, he roared, scrambled to his feet, and swung a fist at Jenkins.
Jenkins immediately retaliated, catching the man's arm with both hands. A bitter frost spread from his own arms onto the priest's body.
The man didn't resist. Instead, his fist opened into a palm, and he seized both of Jenkins's hands.
He had completely lost his mind. Amid his crazed laughter, he opened his mouth wide, and from that gaping maw, a black python shot out, lunging for Jenkins's throat.
He couldn't react in time. With his hands caught, he was helpless, but the cat was not.
With a "Mrow!", Chocolate scrambled out from his chest, pinned the snake with his left paw, and repeatedly slapped its head with his right. In that brief moment, two vines shot out from the void and plunged smoothly into the man's temples.
After it was all over, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the top of the basement stairs. Jenkins hesitated for a moment, then took the wallet from the corpse. He scanned the body one more time and saw that the magic eyes that were Cursed Items had all burst.
He smiled in satisfaction. Cradling Chocolate, who was busy toying with the snake, he slipped out through the earthen doorway just as the passage was about to disappear.
From entering to leaving, only two minutes had passed in the material world. It was a clean and efficient operation. Jenkins was pleased with his performance.
After regrouping with Miss Miller, the two hired a carriage to head back to Jenkins's house first. Miss Audrey was expected to visit later in the evening.
The man leaned back against the carriage wall, staring at the ceiling with a look of utter exhaustion.
"No matter what, today is finally over."
Miss Miller didn't ask what he had done or how he had managed to defeat the cultist.
"After all, you've looped through October 31st five times. But I imagine it was an invaluable experience. Even for an Enchanter, encountering something so extraordinary is incredibly rare."
"Oh, please don't mistake it for good fortune," he replied with a laugh. "I hope to never live through such an exhausting day again in my life."
He answered with a smile, loosening the button at his collar and letting out a long sigh.
Because it was snowing, they had of course taken an enclosed carriage. The sky was growing dark, and the gaslights from the houses along the road shone through gaps in the curtains, casting patches of light on the snow-covered ground.
A series of carriage tracks and footprints marked the white world. The carriage rumbled on, soon to be swallowed by the darkness.
Jenkins and Miss Miller sat facing each other. Jenkins's hat rested on the seat beside him. He lifted it, revealing the cat hiding underneath. ᴛhis chapter is ᴜpdated by novel-fire.net
"Chocolate was a huge help today!"
He picked up Chocolate. The small cat felt soft in his arms and, after a few half-hearted protests with its front paws, stopped resisting.
"Are all animals with extraordinary abilities this powerful?"
Chocolate's gaze immediately sharpened.
"Not necessarily. It depends on how they acquire their abilities. Using an Animal Sentience Elixir to open the path to the extraordinary is the most unstable method. In fact, when an Enchanter wants to raise an animal companion, they usually choose a creature that has inherited its powers innately. Doing what you did—giving an elixir to a pet cat—is actually considered the least efficient way..."
