Lord of The Mysterious Realms Chapter 1213
The only prize left by the colossal snow monster they had vanquished was a sapphire-blue, heart-shaped gem, unearthed from a snowdrift as tall as a mountain.
To call it a gem wasn't entirely accurate, but more importantly, Jenkins's inspection confirmed it was what could be classified as a numbered item.
In other words, it was an Extraordinary item—one that would retain its effects permanently, so long as it remained undamaged. This implied that the snow monster they had just slain was of no ordinary origin. Creatures whose organs could solidify into such artifacts upon death were known as living calamities, the most dangerous disasters one could encounter in an era of peace.
Of course, this era of peace was rapidly coming to an end.
The group was abuzz with discussion as they returned to camp, every face alight with excitement. Though they had won a decisive victory with a single, coordinated strike, the prize they had claimed made them realize just how terrifying their opponent had been. Amid the celebration, many began to privately wonder about the unfamiliar young Scribe from the Legacy Sage Church.
Though most were unaware of Jenkins's origins, they all came to the same conclusion: he had to be a powerful expert, dispatched by the Legacy Sage Church specifically for the war in the north.
Captain Usia excitedly told Jenkins that the night's events were sure to be recorded in the annals of history. While it was unlikely every one of them would be named in the grand libraries of Bel Diran, he was hopeful they might be immortalized in an oil painting on the walls of a church in Ruen.
"That monster, able to merge with nature itself, was surely as powerful as any of the legion commanders in the Snowman Legion! And we killed it without a single casualty—it's an absolute miracle! I'll remember this moment for the rest of my life!"
The others were ecstatic, and while Jenkins shared their joy, he was drained of energy and had to retire to his tent early. With the danger passed and plenty of volunteers for the night watch, he no longer had to worry about their safety.
The chess piece was clearly powerful, but its ice archer form could be replicated by [Twin Demons]. And when used as a bow alone, it lacked the decisive, one-shot-kill potential of [Mechanical Light] or [Blasphemous Creation]. Its sole advantages were its incredible range and the fact that Jenkins was, for some unknown reason, an exceptionally skilled archer, making misses almost impossible.
"But this isn't mine," he thought. "When this is all over, I'll return it to Dolores."
With that thought, he absorbed the ice chess piece from his palm back into his body and scooped up his cat. The feline looked drowsy, repeatedly lifting a paw to rub its eyes.
"Get some rest," he murmured. "We have a long journey ahead of us tomorrow."
(Chocolate... Chocolate is still sleeping, Finney is praying...)
He vaguely heard Finney's voice in his sleep, but upon waking, the words were lost to him. Jenkins felt a pang of longing for his friends in Nolan, but in the current situation, he had no idea if he would be able to return as planned.
The giant snow monster was deemed the culprit behind the frozen railway. Perhaps its demise brought them a stroke of good fortune, because on Thursday morning, Jenkins learned not only that three Enchanters had unexpectedly advanced a level during the night, but also that the messengers sent to the nearest town had returned at dawn.
"We've made contact with Ruen and reported the situation. Ruen says that reinforcements from other directions haven't encountered anything , so this should be the only frozen section of track. We're to proceed along the rails to the nearest town, Rossburg, and confirm if the railway there is operational. Ruen has already notified Rossburg to expect us."
Rossburg wasn't the nearest town, but it was the nearest one on the railway line.
Jenkins was invited to the meeting to discuss their next move, an honor normally reserved for the captains of each church contingent. The man coordinating the joint effort, an old Nightwatchman from the Dark and Hidden Church named Mr. Oude, explained the situation from Ruen and then, to everyone's surprise, deferred to Jenkins.
"You are likely the most powerful among us, and..."
He glanced sideways at the two captains from the Legacy Sage Church. Age brings experience and wisdom, and it was clear the meticulous old man had picked up on something from the way they treated Jenkins.
"In any case, you not only saved the train hanging precariously in the air, but you also led us in defeating that monster last night. I doubt anyone would object to you taking the lead."
Naturally, no one objected. The members of the other churches saw Jenkins as a secret weapon deployed to the front lines by the Legacy Sage Church. Besides, his power and decisiveness were plain for all to see. While letting him take command was unorthodox, it was perfectly understandable under the circumstances.
"Then let's proceed as Ruen advised," Jenkins declared. "Since Rossburg isn't far, I think the train crew can accompany us. That will make it convenient to have them sign confidentiality pacts once we reach the town. As for these supplies destined for the front..."
Jenkins paused for a moment. "We're in a hurry to reach the front lines. We'll bury the supplies here. Everyone, finish your breakfast, pack up, and we'll depart immediately. We should aim to reach Rossburg before dawn. I fear the situation at the front is dire."
It was a sound plan. The captains returned to their squads to pass on the orders. With a group composed entirely of individuals with supernatural abilities, the tasks of burying the supplies, dealing with the train carriages, and breaking down the camp were finished in short order.
Once everything was done, the two-hundred-odd Enchanters from the eight churches set out, moving in their respective squads. Despite their numbers, they marched in a disciplined formation that did not stretch out. Jenkins walked among the members of the Legacy Sage Church, positioned near the front of the main column. The snow had stopped. As the sun rose higher, patches of grass began to emerge from beneath the vast, white expanse. The thick ice on the railway tracks showed signs of melting—a good omen, confirming that the monster from the previous night had indeed been the source of the problem.
Still, no one knew where the creature had come from or why it had done what it did. But that question would soon be answered. As the sun neared its zenith, the entire column halted once more, transfixed by the incredible sight before them.
