Chapter 926: Chapter 926
Upon hearing the urgent pounding at the door, the man in the holographic projection wearing overalls spoke with a hint of panic.
Levis took a deep breath and stood up; he waved his hand at the man in overalls,
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the City Police Station shouldn’t have started investigating the assassination of the Mayor yet, and once they begin their investigation and try to gather evidence against me, with such a big incident, it’s impossible to escape the notice of my ’friends’,
"For such a significant matter, collecting materials and executing the warrant for a search will take a lot of time, and my ’friends’ will surely tip me off in advance, giving us plenty of time to leave.
"They don’t have any excuse to trouble me; although we have many underground deals, we’ve never slipped up, and without evidence, they can’t catch me,
"Based solely on a few statements, even if it comes from Mr. Lin En himself, without evidence, they can’t arrest me,
"As long as it’s within the rules, they can’t touch me. If he breaks the rules, then this ’scandal’ will become another significant advantage for us,
"It’s only been a few hours since the incident, and no one has tipped me off yet; they probably haven’t obtained the proper documents,"
He forcefully calmed his breathing, maintaining a composed expression while looking at the nervous man in overalls as he quickly said, "Don’t be nervous,"
He reached out to press a button on the table, "Wait for my message."
The holographic projection shut off.
"Open the door immediately, or we will resort to forced entry!"
By this time, the banging on the door had become more intense.
Tonight, all of the servants in the villa had been given the night off by Levis, leaving him alone in the entire villa; thus, there were no servants to answer the door for him.
At this moment, Levis was in the innermost part of the hall, in a small reception area partitioned off by sofas and decorations, at some distance from the main door.
He looked down hastily and began to clear the equipment off the table and opened a hidden drawer at the side, preparing to throw all the devices into it.
In that instant, the thick villa door was suddenly bashed open by a squad dressed in Night Walk combat suits, wearing helmets and thermal imagers, entering in single file.
They fanned out in a reversed ’human’ formation, quickly took up positions in the hall, and began to close in around Levis and the sofa he was beneath.
"Gentlemen, this is private property, protected by the laws of the Federation and Yilan City,"
Levis said, looking at the surrounding soldiers, with the device hidden behind his back, his tone cold.
At this moment, a loud shout came from the crowd. Immediately afterward, a young man with bloodstained hair charged out of the group, swiftly grabbed Levis’ neat collar, yanked it upward, and, from a height, glared angrily at him,
"Do you have any idea how many people we lost today? My comrades, my friends, we were still playing cards together this morning, and now they’re gone,"
The young man angrily placed the Gauss Pistol he held in his hand against the chin of the man who appeared to be cultured and genteel, his finger resting on the trigger, "You son of a bitch."
"My friend, I don’t know what you’re talking about."
Levis looked at the young man in front of him, his gaze sharpening slightly, the hand behind his back tensing.
His abilities might not be strong, but he was a Transcendent.
And the young man in front of him was just an ordinary soldier.
In that instant, the surrounding soldiers appeared to have received some instruction, as they quickly turned their muzzles and pointed all their guns at Levis.
Levis’ taut muscles froze.
At that moment, a soothing voice came from behind the young man. A man with blood-spattered on his face and bloodstained clothing emerged from behind the young man. He looked at Levis and smiled,
"No need to be so rough with Mr. Levis; otherwise, if Mr. Levis attacks you and gets himself shot on the spot for assaulting an officer, that wouldn’t be good, would it?"
"Deputy team leader?!"
Sena looked back at the man behind him and, after seeing the man nod his head, he turned back, angrily glared at Levis, and released his grip on Levis’ collar.
"So it’s ’Dawn Falcon’ Mr. Tucker,"
Seeing the man coming out from behind the young man and approaching closer, Levis took a deep breath, his tensed muscles gradually relaxing, and he raised his hand to straighten his collar, which had just been messed up by Sena.
His expression remained calm, smiling at the man, "Mr. Tucker, weren’t you employed by Mayor Lin En and became the Deputy Leader of the Mayor’s Guard? Why are you now together with the Federal Bureau of Investigation?"
His eyes narrowed slightly, "I recall that the Mayor’s Guard is just a security organization to surround the Mayor’s safety; they don’t have law enforcement rights, do they? Or is it that Mayor Lin En is using his private armed forces, planning to unlawfully arrest a law-abiding citizen of Yilan City?"
"We just happened to have received a request from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, acting as temporary external personnel, incidentally helping out the Federal Bureau of Investigation a bit,"
Tucker smiled, glancing back at a young man in Federal Bureau of Investigation uniform who was approaching, "This is an Investigator from the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
"In that case, may I ask,"
Levis glanced at the Investigator, then turned his gaze back to Tucker, "what crime have I committed that you would forcefully enter my residence? Do you have a search warrant?"
His gaze shifted towards Sena, "Why are your troops so... hostile towards a law-abiding citizen?"
Then, his eyes fell on the bloodstains on Tucker’s body, and he continued with a slightly mocking tone, "Could it be that Mayor Lin En suffered an assassination attempt today? You couldn’t protect that much-despised Mayor, and because of your incompetence and uselessness, so many people died for nothing, so you’re grasping at a regular citizen to vent your spleen? Are you trying to take an ordinary man as a scapegoat?"
Upon hearing this statement, Sena flared up again, stretching out his hand, ready to lash out at Levis once more.
Tucker put out his hand, blocking the angry Sena, and looked at Levis, saying with a smile, "Mr. Levis, we never mentioned anything about the Mayor being assassinated."
Hearing this, Levis was momentarily startled, and then with a composed smile, he responded, "Isn’t this matter causing an uproar throughout the city? Who in Yilan City doesn’t know about it?"
Tucker gazed intently at Levis and smiled, "Indeed, the Mayor was assassinated tonight,"
His tone grew cold as he looked at Levis, "We have lost many brothers in this assassination."
"So, you really ’suspect’ that I am involved in the assassination of the Mayor?"
Levis looked at Tucker with a smile, staring straight into Tucker’s eyes, "Let’s not talk about whether I am being falsely accused, you broke into a residence without permission, where’s your evidence? Your arrest warrant? Your search warrant? Are you going to arbitrarily declare a law-abiding citizen guilty based on your guesses?"
"Do you even realize that what you did enrages both Heaven and man?"
Sena glared at Levis in anger.
"Young man, it’s best not to get too worked up."
Levis shook his head, raised one hand and took a box of cigarettes from his pocket, shaking one out, "The Federation is a place ruled by law; without sufficient evidence and the proper procedures, you cannot make an arrest. I could sue you all."
He looked up at Sena, whose face had turned crimson, "Or are you saying you intend to make an arrest by abusing the Mayor’s authority? If this gets out, your Mayor Lin En might have even bigger problems."
Sena, who was originally furious and agitated, slightly stiffened upon hearing Levis mention the potential impact on the Mayor.
"To be precise, we never said we came for the Mayor’s assassination. Instead, Mister Levis,"
Tucker, still smiling, kept his eyes on Levis, "you seem quite concerned and interested in this matter, huh?"
"If it wasn’t for the Mayor’s assassination, why would you come to me at this time?"
Levis’s expression remained unchanged as he placed the shaken cigarette to his lips, holding it in his mouth, "Surely there’s no problem with my taxes?"
With a ’click’, a silver ring was fitted around Levis’s wrist. Tucker watched Levis, who was stunned, "It seems Mister Levis is very aware of his actions."
He reached out and clamped another ring around Levis’s hand behind his back, then gripped his wrist, dislodging what was in his palm and with a flick, brought that hand to the front as well.
The two silver rings ’clicked’ together, forming a pair of electromagnetic handcuffs. Tucker released Levis’s hand and spoke calmly,
"Mister Levis, we suspect you of numerous undeclared underground transactions, malicious tax evasion, and causing significant losses to the Federation and Yilan City Government."
At that moment, the young Federal Bureau of Investigation investigator approached and displayed an electronic search warrant.
Tucker glanced at Evis and continued, "We will legally search your house and any items that may be related to the case; here is the search warrant,"
Then he nodded towards another neatly dressed man emerging from the crowd, "This person is an employee from the Federal Tax Bureau."
The man’s attire was nothing special, but he wore a badge on his chest formed of stars in a triangle, the tip of which supported a balance beam, the emblem of the Federal Tax Bureau.
Seeing this badge, Levis’s expression finally became completely grave.
Tucker gently took the cigarette from Levis’s mouth and tossed it back into the box. Smiling at Levis’s distant expression, he said, "We need your cooperation with the investigation. Will you come with us?"
Tax evasion is a serious crime at the federal level, and both search and arrest warrants go through the federal justice system, without going through Yilan City.
Moreover, the Federal Tax Bureau has its own tax police, with their own warrant issuance process that is faster and more efficient than that of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Levis’s expression darkened completely as he hung his head and glared fiercely at Tucker, "I won’t say anything until my lawyer arrives."
Tucker laughed heartily and made a gesture for the guest to leave, "Please."
A squad of ’soldiers’ surrounded them, standing beside Levis and fitting him with the Transcendent’s electromagnetic restraint device, and escorted him to the Federal Bureau of Investigation vehicles outside.
"Actually caught him, huh."
At this moment, Sena, who had initially been furious, turned back, standing next to Tucker, and said with a hint of exclamation.
Tucker nodded slightly, "I had thought we wouldn’t be able to catch this guy because we had no evidence in our hands. Relying on an investigation to collect evidence, given this guy’s influence at the City Government and City Police Station, I feared he would have fled before we even started, and the investigation would probably have faced tremendous obstacles."
"If we had missed tonight, there was a high probability we would have never caught him. But from his behavior, he seems to truly be connected to the Assassination case. Mr. Lin En was right, it’s a pity we can’t easily find his evidence."
Sena scratched his head, "So how exactly did Mr. Lin En think of taking the route through the Federation tax bureau?"
"Actually, tax issues are an old problem in the underground world,"
Tucker pulled out a cigarette, placed it in his mouth, and lit it,
"After all, many transactions in the underground world can’t stand the light of day and obviously can’t be declared for taxes. Even many large consortiums have tax issues, but since the Federal tax bureau operates independently most of the time, people seldom pay attention to it.
"When I received the order from Mr. Lin En and contacted the main office of the Federation tax bureau through Chenxi City Government, they were already investigating Levis’s tax issues. Otherwise, tonight’s business wouldn’t have been so smooth."
He sighed softly, exhaling a puff of smoke,
"I’m afraid even this was within Mr. Lin En’s expectations. To be honest, such tactics make me think of the old, sly foxes from the underworld I’ve come across, experienced and cunning.
"But those old foxes in the underworld wouldn’t dare to provoke the Federation tax bureau lightly, let alone use it."
The thick smoke drifted across the man’s bloodstained cheek as Tucker gazed at the curtain of rain ahead, murmuring pensively, "It seems Mr. Lin En’s understanding of, and tactics in, this world are deeper than he lets on."
Sena, scratching his head, followed Tucker’s gaze into the distance. He didn’t quite grasp the meaning in Tucker’s words, but from inside and out, it seemed to mean one thing.
That Mr. Lin En is especially badass.
The night deepened, the light rain still falling at the edge of the sky.
He Ao sat on the soft edge of the hospital bed, feeling the wounds inside his body.
Dr. Des had left earlier, in a chorus of tuts and admiration, he cleaned He Ao’s wounds, applied medicine, and advised He Ao not to move too much.
Throughout the process, he seemed quite interested in He Ao’s body and willpower. If it weren’t for He Ao being the mayor of Yilan City and the main ’investor’ of the hospital he had helped establish, Dr. Des probably would have proposed that He Ao participate in research with him.
Of course, He Ao’s main role would be as the subject of research.
A slight itching and pain emanated from the flesh on his body, signifying the natural healing of his physique.
He had already slept once, and although it was only for a few hours, the injuries on his body had healed substantially.
Every time a Copy World began, and after sleeping, injuries would rapidly heal, but it seemed that only the first sleep had such an effect. This was why He Ao dared to perform some extreme operations.
He took a gentle breath, feeling the Divine Sense within him, his gaze shifted forward, looking at the ’personal attribute’ interface.
