Chapter 13: Chapter 13

I knew better than to wish things would be better, that was just wishful thinking on my part. Wishful thinking because, not only did the side comments begin the minute I sat with them for breakfast that day but because they went ahead and brought Faye to have breakfast with us like she was someone of the same rank.

It made me angry but I reined it in and never stopped smiling.

Or at least I didn’t until they opened their mouth.

“Gwenn, when you left and came back, I thought it would be with a better disposition, I mean. You didn’t say anything to Faye even though she is right opposite you on the table.” Catia said with a smile, the brothers were there watching to see how this would go down.

I have learnt earlier on to not bank on any of them to correct their sisters. Their sisters were pets to them and they might not approve of their sisters ways of doing things but they will never side an outsider over their family.

Right now, Faye was more of a family to them than I am and Arius too was not saying anything. Sometimes, I even wonder why I bothered to go along with this sham of a meeting the first time around but I guess, no matter how much I tried to hide the part of me that crave acceptance, that part was never fully going anywhere.

“Would you prefer I send her to get more spices for the food?” I asked Catia and they paused like they were not expecting me to actually say something like that.

“She is your partner, you cannot send her errands like a common maid.” Vala retorted and this time I couldn’t help but laugh.

“You are so funny Vala, we really need to bond very soon. A servant will always be a servant just like a foreigner will always remain that. I am from Noble birth and I will like to see any of you try to refute that and besides, don’t even mention the fact that Faye is my partner or equal in anything because we all know she is not.” I answered Vala as I looked at Arius who was staring at the meal in front of him like it was the most interesting thing ever, then I met Faye’s eyes to see that they were already on me.

With a smile in her direction I added. “All Faye is, is a maid who sleeps with her master, nothing more and a lot less since she just succeeded in killing whatever little dignity she has left.”

Faye face went red as she turned to look at Arius hoping he would say something, I didn’t bother to even look at my husband. If he opens his mouth now, heaven knows that I will slit his throat in anger.

“You have no right to talk that way about me.”

“My dear, I have every right, I am queen after all and you are nothing. Don’t forget your place next time, if you do, you might find yourself tossed out and banned from the palace.”

“You cannot do that!” Faye’s panic could not be hidden.

“I am the queen, you would find out that there is little I… cannot do.” I retorted.

“My king will not let you.” Faye answered.

“If your king and any of your princesses try to interfere in my business, they will see the might of my anger and your king will be ready to share his fancy seat with me, because if he can infringe on my duties, I will sure as hell be able to infringe on his too.” I answered.

“Gwenn.” Arius started weakly and I turned to face him.

“Saying something, your majesty?” I asked.

Arius sighed. “I should have never gotten married to you.”

His words hurt but I am a mistress of making sure my real feelings did not show.

“Why did you Arius, you made me hate your existence, why chose me? You should have chosen someone else then we both would not be unhappy right now.”

Arius mouth dropped open at my words, when his gaze darted to his brothers. I knew he was hoping that I would have ran away from the room, defeated or close to that like I would have stayed behind but more subdued but instead, my words cut him deeply.

“Gwenn.” He started again.

“Saying something, your majesty?” I repeated.

“You know that you shouldn’t be this way to my sisters.” He added.

“That is enough Arius.” My voice was hard and sharp. The few brothers that were pretending like they conversation was a normal one froze and stared at me in shock.

“I told you already, tell the imps of hell who you call your sisters to stay away from me and not rile me up and they wouldn’t see the me I reserve for those I do not like.” In anger I stood up and slammed my hand on the table. “Let this be clear to every one of you. This will be the last time I will be civil to any of you. I don’t know how your mothers were but what I do know is that I will not be like them, I will be a warrior queen and for every disrespect to me, the person will be punished.” Glaring hard at the three princess who were looking everywhere except my face, I added. “Regardless of what your status might be.”

With those words I turned around to leave the room and on a whim, I added. “And Faye, this will be the last time you will be eating on the same table as me, try it next time and I will whip you so much that you will not be recognized.”

With my back still turned, I felt the air shift. The stupid girl wanted to attack me, it was like she has not learnt anything from my conversation with her. As fast as a lightning, I stepped away from the position I was and grabbed her by her hair, when she screamed in rage, I slapped her across the face hard.

“You get away with acting so crazy because I am not with my whip. The next time you try this, there will be hell to pay.” And with her hair. I threw her at the wall.

Looking at the princesses. “Any other person wants to try and get on my nerve?” I asked and when they shook their head. I smiled.

“Thought as much.” I left the room and went back to my room. Thinking about how I needed to know the palace very soon so I can go get food for myself when I do something this dramatic. I could not be letting others get my meal for me, not unless I wanted to be poisoned.

Not when there are so many enemies wanting to take a shot at poisoning the food.
