Chapter 49: Chapter 49
A young boy with brown hair and a combination of sea green and turquoise blue eyes walks in the wallway of their mansion. He was following a middle aged man while he was telling him about the history of their family.
“I don’t understand why I have to learn about this.” The young boy says this while grumpily kicking the carpet.
“Young Master Gabriel!” Rupert, the man that he was following and also the butler of their family, cast him a disapproving glare. “Please stop. You might hit and break something!”
The boy rolls his eyes. He places his hands in his pockets with a huff. “Can we just skip this for some other time? I have football practice to attend to.”
The butler raises a brow at him. “Didn’t your father ground you for three days because you hit someone?”
“Just let me do anything other than give me a history lesson about the second Alpha! I mean, what’s so interesting about his story anyway?” Gabriel tried to keep his temper in check because his wolf might just decide to take control over his body. “Besides, it is not fair. They deserve what happened to them because they were making fun of my smile. Why do I even have this type of smile in the first place!?”
The butler simply smiled at him. “Young master, did you know that the late second alpha was cursed?”
Now that caught the interest of Gabriel when he raises his head to Rupert. “Cursed? What kind? Is it the Killer Smile?”
“Vampirism.” Rupert says it in a spooky voice, hoping to bait the young boy before him. “Your great great grandfather was cursed to become a hybrid for three centuries.”
The boy’s eyes glimmered with interest. “He led the pack for that long?”
“Indeed. Being a vampire means that you never die.”
“That sounds more like a gift than a curse. If you ask me, it is better than having a smile like mine.” The boy pointed out.
Rupert laughs. “I would like to believe that that’s what the late alpha thought as well, but seeing all your friends and loved ones pass on makes it more of a curse than a blessing.”
Understanding started to settle in when Gabriel thought about placing himself in his ancestor’s shoes. Suddenly, he felt sorry for him. Living for three hundred years and watching everyone you know die must be hard. “So, what happened to him? How did he break the curse?”
The butler gestured for his young master to follow him while they passed by numerous paintings until they arrived at the gallery in their mansion. “The curse placed upon your ancestor has a way of revoking it. The curse needs a certain and special witch for it to be lifted. The late alpha left his pack, intending on searching for the witch, as he heard rumours about a certain girl with the smile of a killer.” The butler glances at Gilbert and cannot help but smile when he sees that the boy suddenly becomes interested. “He plans to capture and torture the witch until she agrees to free him from his curse.”
Gabriel noticed that there was a pause, making him all the more curious. “So? What happened? Did he capture the girl?”
The butler stops and looks at his young master’s way. “No, because when he saw the witch, he fell in love.” He grins. “The witch that he sought and waited for three centuries was his wolf’s destined mate.”
"Well, that makes it easy.” Gabriel yawns.
“But it isn’t. The late Alpha was known for his ruthlessness, and he made a lot of enemies in the past. Not only that, but traitors existed in his pack that were trying to kill him. He could not leave his mate alone and he didn’t have the heart to take her away from her family either.”
“Couldn’t he just tell her? It would have been easier.”
“It would if the girl grew up in a non human environment. Plus, he could not bring himself to expose that the witch was his mate because she was under the protection of another werewolf pack - the Gridon pack. The Gridon pack did not like the late Alpha because he was a hybrid. Just like any other wolf, they considered him an abonimation.”
“But that’s not fair. He is still a werewolf.”
“Ah, yes. The thing about his curse is that it made his wolf sleep. He could not shift into his wolf for a long time because his vampire side overpowered his wolf. It wasn’t until his wolf sensed his mate that it started to awaken. He tried to keep his mate safe as long as he could. He even opted to leave her for good. Unfortunately, his beta around that time, had other plans. He wanted the girl to dispel the curse on the alpha so he could kill him and take over the pack. Fortunately, the young lord of the Gridon pack extended a helping hand to the late alpha, allowing them to undo the hybrid curse and save Lady Gabriella Bryce.”
“Gabriella?” The young boy gasped when he realized something about the name. “Rupert, is that name…”
“Yes, young master.” The butler smiles and carefully removes a cover from a massive portrait of a couple. The man with silver and black hair and alluring sea green eyes had both of his hands wrapped around a girl with silver eyes and brown hair. The portrait captured the love in the Alpha’s eyes while he looked at his wife. Additionally, it displayed her loving smile and flushed cheeks as she looked up at him. “You were named after your great great grandmother, Gabriella Beaumont. She used to have the smile of a killer like yours. As a matter of fact, the killer smile is a defense mechanism of a powerful line of witches. It disappears when it deems the beholder fit to protect themselves without the killer smile.” The butler smiles and turns back to the painting. “There was once a legend that a witch would one day appear and lay the hybrid to rest. There were a lot of misinterpretations, thinking that only the witch could kill the alpha when, in fact, it has a very different interpretation. When the Lady Gabriella freed Alpha Aelfric from the curse, it allowed him to live a normal life as a werewolf, where he and his wife grew old and rested together in the afterlife. It is under these two great leaders that the Beaumont pack is now the strongest werewolf clan.”
Gilbert never felt more attached to his name as he heard the story of where his name came from. He turns to the butler with a wondrous gaze. “Say, Rupert. How do you know about all of this?”
The butler smiles. “My grandmother is the cousin of Lady Julie Gridon, the best friend of Lady Gabriella Beamont.” He winks at him before carefully covering the portrait. “Come, young master. Let’s head down stairs. I heard that the young miss of Gridon is going to visit.”
“Titania Gridon?” Gabriel’s face immediately brightens when he learns that his childhood crush is coming to visit. Rupert tries to hide the smile on his face when he sees how pleased the young master looks. Among the wolves in Gabriel’s school, it was only the young lady who was never afraid of his young master’s killer smile.
“Yes. Let’s hurry, young master. We have a lot of preparation before the young lady arrives.”
The two start to leave the gallery room in order to prepare the mansion to welcome Lady Titania Gridon, the descendant of Tyrelle and Julie Gridon, to the Beaumont mansion.
In the butler’s mind, there’s no doubt that when the time comes, the killer smile will soon make the two young wolves realize that they are mates - just like how it did with Aelfric and Gabriella Beaumont.
