Chapter 248: Chapter 248: Essence extraction: the liquid that make the beasts magical
"I am Instructor Enren Kael, and today we will begin your journey of crystal synthesis and essence fusion." A man no older than twenty-five spoke to a class of 40 students.
All the girls were looking at the professor as if he were a celebrity, and Theo could somewhat understand that, his face was really charming.
All the boys, on the other hand, just listened normally as if nothing major had happened, despite this instructor teaching the class.
Tristan was somewhat excited, as according to him, Enren Kael was one of the best instructors to learn from.
"Before we start with the class, does anyone know what this class is about?" he asked again, then chuckled. "I see a lot of lost faces right now, and that is very normal."
Just when he was about to start with the explanation, a hand rose. It belonged to a girl who had been one of the few who answered everything in the previous class too.
Whenever she spoke, Theo realized that she was a lot more intelligent for her age.
While Tristan looked at her with cold eyes — something Theo didn’t quite realize yet.
"Essence extraction is the ability to draw out the hidden potential of a beast’s valuable parts and turn them into a form that can then be used for multiple scenarios, such as the other part of this class, crystal synthesis."
"Splendid!" Enren clapped a few times with a smile, making the girl smile too, before she sat back and looked at the other female students with a smug expression.
"I wasn’t expecting an answer for it right away, and even if we got one, I will still start with a demonstration to tell you what this whole field of study is all about," Enren spoke and moved to a side table that had a lot of equipment and a raw, small reddish frog body on it.
Theo couldn’t help but chuckle; the unfortunate frogs were targeted for experiments even in this world.
"This juvenile demon toad is still alive to preserve the ingredients that are in its body. It has been injected with a medicine to make it paralyzed," Enren spoke before he took a clean, shiny scalpel-like instrument and made a direct cut at the toad’s bulbous body.
Theo saw it and got up from his seat in curiosity. Enren had made the cut so cleanly that Theo couldn’t help but admire the process.
Enren took a lot more equipment after finally opening the body of the toad fully, making everyone look at the thick liquid, blood, and organs all together out in the open.
Some students averted their eyes, not wanting to disgust themselves further, but the professor, on the other hand, just started humming in a good mood.
Theo saw the small leg of the toad start to twitch before Enren made a cut somewhere near it, and it stopped moving.
He was horrified by the fact that even after opening the beast toad fully, it might still be alive, which made him feel like this torture was very unnecessary.
Soon enough, the instructor brought out some small parts of the toad’s body and kept them on a steel plate that looked cleaner than the norm.
One by one, the organs started coming out until finally, the instructor took a small vial and used a dropper to extract the blood out of the toad, dropping it into the small vial before keeping it on the clean silver tray again.
"This will be one of the most basic parts of this class. What did I just do — can anyone tell me that?" he asked again, making many hands come up.
"You, young man."
"It’s the essence extraction, Instructor," the boy spoke with confidence.
"No, you are wrong, young man. But good try," Enren spoke while showing him a military sign that meant ’good work,’ which made the child even more confused, except Theo, who understood and appreciated the use of it.
"This was just simple butchery, everyone," he spoke and continued, "But this butchery is a lot more modern and clean than what is done by the world normally. We call this Pre-Essence Butchery."
Theo wrote down what he just said, only to get a tap from Tristan, who pointed at the book page where he had already circled the word.
Theo still started writing it down, which he knew was the best way to memorize for him, unlike the smartass sitting beside him.
"When we are done with this Pre-Essence Butchery, we will now move on to the essence extraction process. You all can now come closer to this table and look at the process. I am starting now," Enren spoke and began preparing the tools.
Theo looked at Tristan, who did the same; they quickly got up while everyone else moved slowly and briskly made their way to the table, taking the best spot there was.
When the other kids got to the other sides and everything was taken, nobody preferred coming to Theo’s side, as he was a lot taller and broader than the normal youth his age, obstructing much of the view without even realizing it.
Soon enough, Theo saw Enren bring out a big, specialized syringe from under the table and adjust some dials that were on the end.
Theo looked at it with marvel — he hadn’t expected there to be something like this in a world that still looked medieval.
"This is a specialized tool whose name you will learn later. For now, you just need to know that the needle attached to it has been made with a very, very rare crystal found in a gate a hundred years ago. There isn’t a lot of it in our world right now, but we have found some ways to replicate it artificially," Enren spoke and moved the syringe down to one of the small organs of the toad.
"Watch this carefully," he said as he got the syringe really near the organ and touched it.
When he touched it, Theo saw faint glowing lines all around the organ that hadn’t been there before.
"What is this?" he asked instinctively, not realizing that he wasn’t in front of his attendants anymore but a renowned instructor.
"I like your curiosity, young man," Enren spoke with a smile, as if he appreciated Theo asking right away.
"This is what we are here for, this is the essence. A liquid that flows through the body of all beasts and the reason they are so magical and mystical."
