Chapter 467: Chapter 467
"Why are you here?" Tang Zheng propped himself up and, seeing Li Muqing still dressed in men’s trousers, furrowed his brows. There were no other women behind her.
"I, I....." Li Muqing’s mouth trembled before she started crying, as if she was pouring out all the grievances she’d been holding in for days.
"Shut up, answer the question." Tang Zheng couldn’t stand to see women cry, "Did Qin Yan and the others also go to the battlefield?"
"Yes, a major asked us to bring food to the frontline soldiers. Are you hungry? I brought bread." Li Muqing ran to Tang Zheng’s side, took off her backpack, and pulled out some food. She looked at him expectantly, and said happily, "I didn’t expect to run into you, how lucky."
"Seems like the military higher-ups want us to die." Tang Zheng wanted to understand the situation in more detail, but regrettably, Li Muqing was vague, merely complaining about the unfair treatment she received.
"Zhang Ying and the others are so terrible. Even though we’re fellow villagers, they did not take care of me but instead threw me at the frontline. However, my luck finally turned around, it’s so great to run into you." Li Muqing only blamed others without considering her behavior of not communicating with others and remaining silent every day.
At her company, Li Muqing relied on her beauty and had many suitors, thus she put on an aloof and cold demeanor. There might be men who liked this style, but in this world dominated by killing and survival, such behavior was likely to get her killed.
Unfortunately, Li Muqing showed no remorse. She clung to Tang Zheng’s arm, "I won’t go back, I want to stay with you."
She didn’t want to waste a moment when they were alone. Tang Zheng was now like a valuable asset, a matter of life and death. After experiencing the cruel events of the first day, she had vowed to survive at any cost and live even better than those newbies who didn’t care about her life.
"Shh." Tang Zheng made a gesture for quiet and put his ear to the ground. The next moment he turned his attention to the fort, and a Beastman Grenadier charged out. He twisted his body, flinging a long-handled grenade at Tang Zheng before opening fire.
Tang Zheng pulled Li Muqing in his arms, carrying her to safety as the grenade exploded, scattering the soil and making a small wildflower in the wind sway like a flickering candle.
A series of bullets chased Tang Zheng, whistling as they passed. Holding his gun in one hand, Tang Zheng started suppressing the enemy’s fire. Taking advantage of this gap, two more Grenadiers and six Suicide Bomber Slaves rushed out of the fort and charged towards Tang Zheng, howling loudly.
Tang Zheng didn’t want to die with these ugly creatures. He changed his target, shooting at the leading Slave. After three bullets, he finally hit the explosives on the Slave.
Boom! A violent fire engulfed the Slave, and the shockwave tossed his burning corpse seven or eight meters away.
"Get down and hide." Using the cover of the smoke, Tang Zheng tossed Li Muqing into a bomb crater, then he rushed out again. The distance of fifty meters between the two sides could be quickly closed with a full sprint. The enemy had superior numbers, so if Tang continued to resist while laying on the ground would be suicidal. He had to keep moving to keep the enemy from locking on his position.
Tang Zheng moved in an arc to the other side of the Beastmen, while simultaneously firing at and killing a Slave Bomber that stubbornly tried to approach Li Muqing. The Grenadiers probably figured Li Muqing was a lowly civilian and posed no threat, so they held Tang Zheng as their priority target and pursued him instead.
"Don’t let the food escape!" The Beastmen shouted, communicating with each other. They scattered in an attempt to surround Tang Zheng. Then seven more charged out of the fort. It was clearly a small reconnaissance team that had launched a surprise attack through the underground tunnel.
Bullets pecked at the ground behind Tang Zheng, throwing up several mud pillars. A few bullets even hit him but were blocked by the shield. The Beastmen didn’t have such good equipment and were all killed in the fight without exception.
Tang Zheng swapped out his ammo clip as quickly as possible, but the intelligent Beastmen seized the gap to throw a flurry of grenades, disrupting his movements. When he emerged from the smoke after evading, the Beastmen managed to close in. Seeing that bullets were ineffective, they stabbed at his head with their shiny daggers.
Even though he had reloaded, Tang Zheng dared not shoot fearing the inertia from the daggers could still harm him after killing them. So, he activated the chainsaw function for deflecting.
Clang! Sparks flew as steel clashed against steel. The chainsaw gun, following the momentum, slashed downward, severing the forearms of the Beastman in front of him. All the Beastmen quickly surrounded him from every direction. They did not shoot, either out of confidence in overpowering humans in melee combat, or for fear of accidental injuries due to the large bullet caliber.
The towering height of the Beastmen combined with their hefty weight of over 400 pounds, made them feel like human-shaped tanks. Tang Zheng felt immense pressure confronting the Beastmen, who were glaring at him with bloodshot eyes and exhaling foul-smelling breath.
Seeing the Beastmen, Li Muqing trembled with fear. She wanted to run, to come back after Tang Zheng had killed them. But hearing gunfire from nearby forts under Beastmen attack, she quickly hid in the bomb crater, praying for Tang Zheng’s victory.
Tang Zheng managed to cut through half the waist of a Beastman on his left with a knife while taking a hit on his back. He then broke through the encirclement and turned around to fire at the Beastmen. He immediately downed six Beastmen whose reactions were slightly slower. After exhausting his rifle ammo, he pulled out his Dragon Bone Curved Blade and charged back into the crowd of Beastmen.
The Beastmen weren’t stupid. Seeing Tang Zheng break through, they immediately raised their guns and fired. At any moment, a bullet could blow up his head.
After beheading the last Beastman, Tang Zheng scanned the dozens of nearby forts and found all of them had been blown up and were emitting black smoke. So, he quickly picked up a Beastman rifle and hung it over his shoulder, procuring their ammo clips.
"Don’t just stand there, help me pick up the ammo clips,"
"Ok." Li Muqing hurriedly complied, trying to get up, but her legs were weak, and she fell back down.
"Never mind, come here." Hearing the dense gunfire coming from a distant fort, knowing this place might already have been occupied by Beastmen, Tang Zheng didn’t want to stay here any longer. As Li Muqing approached him, he apologized before tugging off her small suit.
"What are you doing?" Li Muqing panicked, protecting her chest with her arms. Then, with a gleam in her eyes, she relaxed her hands and subtly pushed her chest out.
Inside her suit, she was wearing a white waistcoat with a large collar. The fabric was thin, making her black bra faintly visible.
Tang Zheng didn’t have the time to appreciate this. He made a simple bundle with the suit sleeves, dumped the collected ammo clips into it, picked it up, and ran towards the rear defense line.
Li Muqing followed behind him, panting heavily.
"Stay close to me." After running about 500 meters, Tang Zheng suddenly threw himself into a bomb crater, setting up his rifle and eyeing the Beastmen who were attacking a large fort. He did not attack hastily, as he didn’t want to become their primary target.
Nearly a hundred Beastmen surrounded the area, firing at the fort. Several suicidal labor Beastmen charged forward but were all repelled. This was, after all, an armory manned by an elite battalion.
Tang Zheng noticed other soldiers who had miraculously survived the Beastmen’s assault were also converging here. Upon seeing the Beastmen, they immediately took cover. They didn’t dare to retreat, fearing to be executed as deserters.
"Hey, brother. Let’s stick together." An old soldier ran up to Tang Zheng, looked him up and down, panting and chuckling. "Nice, you have managed to capture so much equipment!"
Tang Zheng did not reply, preparing to open fire, but the old soldier stopped him.
"Don’t be reckless, I’d rather not become a target for the Beastmen," the old soldier advised him. "Lie here quietly, then decide whether to retreat. That’s what you should be doing."
"This is just a routine harassment attack by the Beastmen, trying to keep the frontline soldiers on edge. Don’t worry, the intensity won’t be too great." To Makeshift the old soldier’s point, just as he finished speaking, another three hundred Beastman grenadiers emerged from a tunnel dug by burrowing beasts, accompanied by numerous suicidal Bomber Slaves, launching an even fiercer attack.
"This is bad, run." The old soldier’s face changed color, leaping up like a startled rabbit and running away from the fort. He thought the newbie would die, as he was too slow. But to his surprise, the next moment he saw the newbie carrying a heavy Beastman rifle and a large bundle, running pass him and leaving him far behind.
"Is he even human?" The old soldier had just finished gasping when a violent explosion came from behind him.
The battalion commander, seeing the large number of Beastmen, decisively detonated the remote-control bombs that had been buried near the large fortress. This was a common tactic and not surprising at all.
Tang Zheng stopped running. The explosion nearly wiped out all the Beastmen. Human soldiers came out, grinning, and dismembered the severely wounded Beastmen with their chainsaw guns, then grabbed the spoils of war.
"Everyone, return to your forts. Anyone not complying will be charged with treason." The battalion commander’s orders blared from a loudspeaker, reaching several miles away. The soldiers who had rushed over returned, looking dejected.
"Let’s go, if this fort does not explode, we can’t retreat." The old soldier let out a sigh, grumbling at the battalion commander’s excessive resistance. Tʜe sourcᴇ of thɪs content ɪs n͟o͟v͟e͟l͟f͟i͟r͟e͟.net
Watching these soldiers resistance, Tang Zheng had nothing to say and silently walked back
"Tang Zheng." Li Muqing finally caught up with him. Her legs gave out, and she fell directly into Tang Zheng’s arms, pressing her plump chest against his chest.
"You lucky dog," the old soldier gave a thumbs up then walked towards a badly damaged fort with his rifle. Compared to women, he was more eager to find some items left from before, as he still had a wife and child to support back home.
Tang Zheng also began searching the fort with Li Muqing and slowly returned to the front line.
"You should probably go back, it’s too dangerous to follow me." Tang Zheng had a headache. Li Muqing was determined to follow him, which was quite troublesome. Just as he was about to discourage her, the woman followed him into the fort and suddenly hugged him from behind, pleading, "Please don’t make me go, I can do anything."
Before Tang Zheng could answer, the woman behind him plunged onto the bed due to inertia, then clung to him like an octopus, kissing his cheeks. (To be continued. If you enjoy this novel, please visit qidian.com to vote and support. Your backing is my greatest motivation.)
