Chapter 146: Chapter 146

Chad sat with other hunters as they waited for their instructor, Spencer, to finally arrive. The latter has been very strange lately. He seemed lost in thought with a worried expression that never left his face.

Chad had known him since he was a kid and he knew the man wasn't one to fret over something trivial. Which means his master had a lot on his mind. Maybe it's the strained relationship between creatures and hunters that worries him. The possibility of war must put him in all his states. He doesn't feel well either, especially since he knows the truth. The whole truth about Sophia.

He is afraid that she will find herself in the middle of all this and even if her mate is reputed to be the most powerful of his race, he cannot get rid of this disturbing presentiment that tears his guts apart.

He heard a hunter next to him complaining about how late Spencer was when he finally decided to go see what was going on. He saw the man enter the guild headquarters over two hours ago so why is he taking so long to come and train them?

"I'm coming with you, buddy." Proposed another hunter who in Chad's opinion just wanted to stretch his legs. It's indeed easy to get bored here.

They walked for a while before finally seeing the object of their search come running toward them. He looked weird anyway looking from side to side like that. His movements were nervous and he received rigorous training to be able to establish that at this moment Spencer seemed both fearful and resigned.

"You're feeling good?"

Chad asked as Spencer jumped up looking a bit panicked at his student.

" Uh... Yes... of course, I'm fine."

He replied stuttering then recovering himself, he added.

" What are you doing there? It's training time. Instead of being here, you should be doing a few laps of the stadium."

Spencer spoke wanting to be authoritative even though Chad could see that his confused gestures seemed to be hiding something. He kept glancing behind him, seeming to check where he came from.

"Are you sure you're alright? You look livid and your face is pale." The other hunter spoke and eventually, Spencer yelled at them.

"Holy shit, since I'm telling you that I'm fine. You blocked my word."

He shouted surprisingly at the teenagers who fell silent looking at him dazedly. It's not like Spencer to yell at them like that. Even training logs, it never does.

Chad frowned, not understanding what was going on here. Usually, he doesn't bother with this kind of story, but there, he has the impression that something is going on.

" Well, let's go then." Chad cut off giving his master a dubious look.

He saw the man sigh before looking behind him one last time. They walked to the training ground and started doing the exercises given by the instructor.

But even though he seemed to direct their training, many could see that their instructor seemed evasive. He seemed elsewhere and it showed in the quality of their teaching.

He was confused by the instructions he gave them, sometimes he told them to go to the left, then in the middle of the exercise, he apologized saying that it was the opposite that he had to do.

Chad kept staring at his master like that for several minutes and then, like the scream of a wounded animal, a howl was heard in the guild's upper lodge causing everyone to stop.

Chad and the other hunters looked towards the place as their eyes opened wide. This was where the priestess lived, the white alfe who was their deity. The only white alfe they have saved after the massacre of her people a few years ago.

Chad hadn't wanted to worry Sophia, but alves were an endangered species. There were only a handful left and they were hiding so much that only their goddess had been taken to their side.

He shook his head before deciding to go look. This terrible noise came from her private room, where only a small number of hunters are allowed to enter.

He ran with the others before stopping abruptly, noticing that Spencer hadn't moved from where he was. He looked panicked at the same time, but there was another feeling inside him that Chad couldn't identify.

"Spencer, are you coming?"

He called out and finally, the man looked at him just nodding. They ran to the Goddess' chamber and what they found there made Chad's blood run cold.

Their goddess, the white alfe, had been murdered.

Her body had been lacerated on all sides and it didn't take a genius to imagine that it was the work of a creature. The show was such that many wanted to puke.

The guild leader who was already there when they arrived had a stunned face, all the colors on his face were gone and he wasn't the only one. Their goddess had just been killed. But how? No one except hunters can get here.

They were about to turn when they heard a chuckle and then a young man came out causing Chad to miss a beat.

It was, Jessy.

He recognizes this bad guy. It was he who kidnapped him, one of the instigators of the misfortunes that strike this city.

" Who are you?" The guild leader asked in a cold voice as Jessy smiled shifting into his hybrid form.

" a lycan." The others screamed as Chad gritted his teeth. He doesn't like how things are going.

"Did you do this?"

The guild leader asked calmly as Jessy smiled, raising his bloody hand.

" In your opinion."

After saying that, all the hunters stood on guard as Spencer, dark-faced and frozen, trembled. That was not what this man told him, he just had to abduct the goddess to create suspicion from the hunters on the creatures. Not kill their goddess. It's not possible, what did he do?

Jessy looked at Chad before giving him a condescending look as he smiled. Chad missed a beat, could it be that these people knew about their activities and decided to attack first? But how? And why kill their goddess?

He was about to ask when three of the most seasoned hunters pounced on Jessy who didn't fight back. Chad just saw the hunters' swords slash through his body before Jessy's heavy body fell to the ground lifeless.

What was the project? He just wanted to be noticed? What purpose? After his crime, he could have easily escaped given the ease with which he entered, or just hidden somewhere before fleeing afterward. But he introduced himself as a lycan after killing the symbol of their identity as hunters, then allowing himself to be easily killed.

Was it a maneuver?

Chad's thoughts were cut off when the guild leader gasped upon seeing pictures in Jessy's pocket. There were photos of the alves that they had managed to catalog over the past decade but had not been able to save because they had arrived too late. They had all been killed. In the photos, there were red crosses on their faces indicating that they had been killed. Then he saw the photo of their white alfe who had just been murdered.

" So it's this asshole and his ilk who killed all the alves? But for what purpose?"

" Boss it's obvious, the alves help us and guide us in our fights, it's thanks to them that we have this superhuman strength. If the creatures get rid of our source of power…"

The other hunters gasped.

" They weaken us and can get rid of the hunters guild."

The cold, vengeful-hearted hunters grabbed their guns as Chad began to understand. A war, these people want to create a war to distract the two main camps, then when they have killed each other, they will just come and finish off the last ones still standing.

He had to explain the situation to the others. He was about to open his mouth when the chef gasped again.

"Isn't it... The Luna of Soul Moon?"

Chad opened his eyes wide. No, they didn't dare.

The guild leader rotated the photo before reading the inscribed words aloud.

[Sophia Carpenter, daughter of a lycan and a dark alfe, location, Soul Moon]

The swirls and commotions were heard as Spencer felt his strength failing him. He had created a path of no return.

"This is the reason why the collar did not recognize her…"

Grim faces began to light up as the leader spoke.

" These creatures have killed all the alves and now they are holding our last goddess captive. We must find her and save her from their clutches."

Chad stood in front of the leader before shouting.

"No wait...it's not what you think."

" Chad, we don't have time anymore. War is declared."
