Chapter 592: Chapter 592
Indeed, this high ground, which one might have thought was merely the top of a cave, was actually the entrance to a biological research and development facility. This primitive-looking place, utterly devoid of any technological atmosphere, was truly the laboratory Jun Bao had mentioned. Moreover, it was destined to become one of the giants in the food industry, developing new sustenance for the apocalypse and transforming the dietary landscape of this era.
Tsk, who would have thought it would be so shabby?
Looking down from the mountaintop, a seemingly bottomless pit stretched out below, but around its perimeter were layers upon layers of recessed platforms.
"Miss Jing, look. There are a total of 14 levels below. Although it’s not a large space, each level has its own independent area to conduct various experiments, and it’s fully equipped. Its most significant feature is that the laboratory possesses a relatively self-contained ecosystem. It can recycle resources and is self-sufficient in terms of energy. This is the biggest difference between it and other research labs in the apocalypse, which constantly burn through money, resources, and energy."
Song Bin wiped his sweat; which really just meant they were poor. Without strong financial backing, they had to prioritize survival before any other research. Actually, with the Jun Family’s status, they definitely had the capability to establish a proper laboratory. But this lab was Young Master Jun’s own... oh no, it was a collaboration between Young Master Jun and someone else.
As for the collaborator... Song Bin felt a bit melancholy again. Might today’s agenda not go smoothly? He’d heard that they originally had a dispute over the shares, and now Young Master Jun was releasing so many...
"Manure biogas provides the lab’s electricity and also serves as fertilizer. This first layer is a vegetable garden. Let’s go down and take a look," he said, sounding like a real estate agent proudly showing off his property.
However, this lab would soon include Jing Shu’s shares. This was practically her own property now; she needed to inspect it thoroughly.
The old-fashioned, swinging mini-crane, which went CREAK, CREAK, descended like an elevator to the first floor. Yes, it was manual, wasting no energy, easily operated up and down using the principle of leverage. But Song Bin was terrified. He feared that the slightest mishap would send the old crane plummeting to the bottom, resulting in his certain death. Couldn’t they spend a little money on something safer?
"Vegetable garden?" Jing Shu stepped off the crane, which gave a final CREAK, looking at the walls covered with various terrifying-looking fungi. The fence was surrounded by vegetables that didn’t require sunlight, but they all had bizarre appearances: some had black leaves covered with thorns, others bore slender, long purple fruits, and there were also black fruits composed of countless tiny bumps, clustered densely on the ground, each bump topped with a long hair.
Even more striking was a glaring white patch covering another wall, resembling hugely magnified cellular spores. They writhed as if alive, like insects. Whenever muddy water went DRIP, DRIP onto them, they immediately surged toward it, Qiqi rearing up.
If one were to bite into those, Jing Shu had no doubt they’d immediately squirt out a white fluid.
Jing Shu grabbed a white cellular spore. It struggled desperately, its long, black, thread-like root still embedded deep in the wall, stretching for dozens of centimeters as she pulled. Pulling it out felt somewhat amusing to her. Song Bin, however, quickly tried to stop her. Damn, wasn’t Miss Jing afraid at all?
"These are vegetables?" Jing Shu had seen many things in her life, but never such creepy ’vegetables.’
Song Bin forced a smile, nodding then shaking his head. Everyone here must be crazy to actually like these disgusting things, he thought as he covered his mouth and pulled Jing Shu toward the next level down. "The second layer houses the livestock," he explained, "and all their manure is transported to the biogas area."
The livestock were pathetically few in number and also very abnormal.
On one side of the wide, square platform stood five or six chickens, constantly foraging for food. The reason for the uncertainty in number was that these chickens varied greatly in form: some had six wings, some had four legs, some possessed dual bodies, and even more bizarrely, there were hermaphroditic chickens that seemed to be nuzzling each other, making it difficult for Jing Shu to determine the exact count.
"We should have brought Fat Chicken to see this new world," she mused. "Some people’s methods are even wilder than ours."
There were also a sow and a boar that appeared relatively normal, aside from being painfully thin, practically skin and bones.
However, as Jing Shu and Song Bin descended, they saw a group of people gathered around the sow and boar, sighing in disappointment.
"Damn it, where did it go wrong? The gene sequence and chromosomes are correct, and so is the embryo."
"If you ask me, the problem still lies with the sow."
"I say, stop messing with these useless methods! Why not just go all out? The consequences of chromosome deletion and sequence scrambling... how will we know what we’ll get unless we try? Perhaps the worst outcome is they end up like these chickens, with three heads and six arms. That wouldn’t be too bad."
"Using that stuff, it really becomes irreversible."
It seemed they were starting to argue.
Song Bin was on the verge of tears. This is a disaster! What terrible luck, running into such a group of lunatics right after arriving!
"Yo, Song Bin is here. Got any more news?"
Only then did someone notice Song Bin and Jing Shu, the two outsiders. Seriously, if someone wanted to rob this place, there seem to be no security measures at all, Jing Shu frowned. If she were to hold shares in the future, wouldn’t this also count as her property? Security in the apocalypse is crucial and must be tightened.
Song Bin forced an awkward yet polite smile. "Director Xie," he began, "I’ve brought Miss Jing, who is here to sign the contract today. Young Master Jun should have informed you, right? Regarding the equity shares, Miss Jing will be providing energy for the laboratory..."
To Jing Shu, Song Bin quickly added in a lower voice, "This is Xie Zhuzhu, Young Master Jun’s partner. He’s in charge of all research and development and related matters in the laboratory. He’s also the director here and is highly qualified. Don’t be fooled by his youth; he’s actually one of Huaxia’s youngest scientists."
As for what kind of scientist he was, Song Bin didn’t have the heart to specify; he couldn’t bring himself to say it.
Xie Zhuzhu, however, paid them no mind. He was squatting in front of the sow, tenderly examining her and trying to soothe the agitated animal. Having heard Song Bin, he waved his hand impatiently. "No time, no time! We’ll talk in a few days. I’m not doing anything else until this problem is solved. Not even if the Heavenly King himself shows up!"
Xie Zhuzhu was just that stubborn.
Song Bin’s expression instantly stiffened. Damn it! Miss Jing only has three days here! She’s heading back to Wu City soon!
Jing Shu’s eyebrows rose again. Honestly, the situations she kept finding herself in! And she was a very busy person!
Jing Shu strode forward. Song Bin trembled with fear. Surely Miss Jing isn’t planning to use violence? That... that absolutely wouldn’t do!
Then, Jing Shu pushed through the crowd and squatted down. Read complete versıon only at 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹✶𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲✶𝗻𝗲𝘁
